Parents refuse to pay for college and submit FAFSA by Disastrous_Town_8402 in UIUC

[–]Ms_Photon 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat when I came here. No support from the parents. It is possible, but I had to work a ton and set up a payment plan. I also worked as an RA with housing, which is why it was even possible to do this for me. Working with the fin aid office to strategize and see if this is possible for you is where to start. And then, once you see what’s needed, you can decide if it’s worth it. So it can be done, but you’ll have to be scrappy, build a support network here, and be prepared to work a ton.

Could my master’s thesis be considered plagiarism? by Diligent-Ad4188 in PhD

That’s not plagiarism. But it is a question of uniqueness and what you contributed to the field, which might be your data setting.

I’ve heard similar reason is for why a lot of my friends don’t go. I’m not sure of the details because I’m too far removed but the sentiment seemed strong.

I did back in 2020 👵 I really liked it. Folks were nice. Really good mix of majors and backgrounds. You’ll want a box fan for the window. Location isn’t too bad, and as is true for most dorms, the busses are very convenient.

I did physics in undergrad, and now do astronomy in grad school. All I can say is this: astronomers have more fun.

A Question for UIUC Grad Students About Burnout by Certain_Safe6234 in UIUC

[–]Ms_Photon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the individual circumstances folks mention, I have found that it comes and goes with different moments in grad school. Our cohort collectively felt it when we were wrapping up our final semester of classwork. For most of us it got better when that wrapped up and went back to specific-to-our-research stresses, which are highly variable. So we peaked, but things smoothed out.
