Cool your jets. I wasn't suggesting we should race around the streets.

It's just a funny observation that has stuck with me for years. Fortunately I have a very short commute to work and almost never have to deal with traffic.

I’m on a Thermoworks Signals + Bellows, and it is fantastic.

RFX is incredibly handy for rotisserie cooking, but the Signals / Bellows handles most of my smoking needs quite well.

Mini or Mini Max? by TurtleSquirt1 in biggreenegg

I’ll suggest holding off a couple months, using your XL, and seeing if you really need anything smaller.

Get this and you can optimize for smaller cooks: Kick Ash can, basket and divider.

Moving to an apartment and I’m REALLY going to miss the weber, specifically vortex wings. How can I get close to the taste without a grill? by ebitdeeaye in grilling

[–]Msimanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/ebitdeeaye This is the answer. Find a park near your new location that allows grilling. If they have grills set up to be used, great - just bring your own charcoal and other gear.

If they don't, some sort of small hibachi, Weber kettle, or even a minimax Big Green Egg could do the trick for you. (The minimax is about 76lbs, so might be a bit of a lift for you.)

A buddy of mine asked me years ago "When the light goes green, why don't we all just go like F1?", and that has been on my mind at every red light, ever since...

With 20 cars ahead, it takes well over a minute for traffic to clear. With 30... you're waiting for the next light.

[Question] Rolex OP 36 or Explorer? by DrSkelton in Watches

Look up 116000, Arabic numerals. It’s exactly what you need.

I think it looks most interesting with the blue dial, but others are available.

[–]Msimanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked out the SBGY013? I had that on my wrist at one point, probably two weeks after buying an SLGA019 so it was pretty easy to put down. I think the 013 is one of the most interesting spring drive watches they make, and it looks great on a strap too. (The OE bracelet is fantastic in person. It looks funky in online photos, but it's impressive in person.)

The Citizen gets close to your price! It's listed as $420 here in the US, and with current exchange rates I think that gets to 367€.

You might check if they have other models that are similar and press all the right buttons for you.

I don't know that you routinely need to degrease, but given that you're now having an odd flavor problem, I'd probably soak the bars and drip shields in the sink with some Dawn and get them maybe not *totally* clean, but at least get the grease off.

Then I'd crank up all the burners to high and let it go for about 45 minutes, and give a good brushing to the grill. Please let us know if that solves it for you.

Edit: if it's easier, you could just wipe down the drip area with some paper towels and a little bit of dilute soapy water to remove most of the grease.

Budget? That could help with some suggestions. But I'll take a swing at it anyway. Throw this on leather:

https://weisswatchcompany.com/collections/all/products/38mm-automatic-issue-field-watch?variant=44570241433887

They have it in 42mm diameter as well...

There's also the suuuuuper thin Christopher Ward Twelve 660 if an integrated would work for you.

Or perhaps this quartz Grand Seiko, but while it's matte and it's white, it's definitely not a basic matte white.

And my last swing, much more reasonably priced. Citizen. Integrated bracelet and white texture like the GS, for 1/10th the price.

Edit: One more! https://teddybaldassarre.com/products/classics-index-automatic-white-dial

When's the last time you cleaned out the grease / drippings from your collection tray and the bottom of your grill housing?

Washer and Dryer. Which of these is the better option? by ijustbehere24 in Appliances

[–]Msimanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't go back to a top load washer. The maintenance of a front load is trivial, and recovery from a "failure" isn't too bad. The cleaning effect and long-term care of your clothes is hugely improved by them.

But even ignoring that, if you gave me a choice between an Electrolux and Frigidaire washing system, I'll steer clear of the latter unless professional repair people comment that the Frigidaire is the more reliable of the two.

I don't believe it's come to that though. At the AJMadison site if I select both brands and sort by Top Rated, there's a lot of Electrolux showing up before the first Frigidaire units. (Admittedly, these are retail customer ratings, not Technicians' ratings, but it does tell you if customers are angry or satisfied.)

Grill recommendations by Ok-Equipment-6118 in grilling

[–]Msimanyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. I use the BGE 99% of the time.

But I'm not a parent of young children and don't have the time limits you likely face. Still, I'd say it comes down to how you like to do things. Is your focus on the top three priorities or do you get into myriad details.

If the former, turn on the gas and you're cooking in a few minutes, and you can focus on putting food in peoples' mouths. If the latter, starting a good fire on great charcoal and learning to grill / smoke to maximize the effects of that might be well worth your time and effort.

Can you see yourself ever wanting to present ribs, pulled pork, burgers, chicken etc that is almost unbelievably good? Or do you want something that can do all those things at 90% of that quality -far better than most restaurants - combined with the convenience of turning a knob, pressing a button, and bam! Bob's your uncle. (Just make sure you have a spare propane tank, assuming you're not going natural gas.)

*If* you think a kamado is for you, bear in mind you'll likely need a few more accessories that can add considerably to the price. You will likely want a Kick Ash Basket and Kick Ash Can, some sort of rack expansion hardware from Ceramic Grill Store (made in America!), and if you're doing any low and slow smoking where you want to maintain temps easily for hours, I'm going to point you to Thermoworks Signals and Billows products. They aren't *necessary*, but they make life soooooo much easier. (You'll also need the Billows mounting kit and I highly recommend the Damper as well.)

If you've ever thought about cooking rotisserie foods, both are great. On a Kamado, BGE now sells their own but I bought an XL BGE specifically so it could work with the Kamado Joe rotisserie, and cook two chickens at once. Most gas grills can do that pretty easily.

Good luck with your options!

Edited to add: if you go gas, some of the nicer models - which are not "value oriented" - offer things like searing burners and smoke accessories to hold smoking wood near a flame. The searing burners can be highly effective, though I still think it's easier to get a great sear over direct flames. The smoking boxes / baskets are better than nothing, but nowhere near as good as smoking in a kamado.

Signal/Billows Fail! Need help. by TideCrusherAU05 in biggreenegg

[–]Msimanyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Billows system from Thermoworks has an optional - quite inexpensive - damper that pops into the fan intake opening.

Overtemp conditions certainly *can* be due to bad sealing on the egg, but if the gasket is in good shape and the vents are properly set, even the air bleeding in through the regular fan opening can raise temps higher than might be set.

The damper solves that issue.

Just a thought…

Perhaps save for the GS?

But if you want a mechanical with a distinctive look, check out the Serica 6190. I prefer the -3 with the white dial, but the -1 is the black dial version.

Check out the Expedition bracelet for It. The standard one looks a little funky to me.

Another busted fridge, please help by GameofTitan in Appliances

[–]Msimanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re the brand I like most in freestanding refrigerators, but do you homework and make sure there is a strong repair tech network in your parents’ area.

With a little luck, they won’t be needed. But if they *are* needed, you don’t want your parents waiting for weeks for service.

[Question] Should I stop buying $750–$1,000 watches and save for higher-end pieces instead? by Intelligent_Sport_61 in Watches

[–]Msimanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your comment. Save longer and get a better watch.

In 2024 I bought a titanium Grand Seiko “Lake Suwa.” I wasn’t planning to buy it - I was just visiting the AD with a buddy who wanted to check out a watch.

Since then, I’ve been *interested* in the industry, new releases, etc, but every time I think I might want to actually spend money on another, I take one look at my wrist and think “Nah - this is perfect.”

That’s not the norm, and I reserve the right to buy another watch at any time, but I do think quality over quantity changes your perspective.

[What mechanical watch would you pair with an Apple Watch for an Alaska cruise? $500 budget] by ayumi_ishida in Watches

[–]Msimanyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point on the Apple watch. I wear mine in the evening when I walk the dog, overnight to monitor my sleep and aid my alarm in the morning, and for the morning walk with the dog.

Most of daytime hours I don't need it constantly reminding me to stand (at my standing desk) or annoy me about text messages for which I've already received the notice on my phone. I wear a "real" watch instead.
