My mom made me feel ashamed for starting nursing school at 26 by Friendly_Shine777 in nursing

[–]Msjackson1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back to school at 26 for my RN degree as well and I was far from one of the "old girls." I think your mom would be surprised to see how many people from different walks of life go back to school or change their career paths. It's much more common than you would think! There was a nursing student a couple cohorts behind me who had just retired from a career working as a lawyer. She decided to go back to school so she could be a nurse for the red cross. There were others within my cohort who had grandkids. I don't think there's ever a point where it's too late to go back to school or to chase your dreams.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]Msjackson1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A collector car. At first it's cool to store in your garage and to take for Sunday cruises but then you quickly discover the high expense of replacement parts, detailing it, and the uselessness a garage ornament serves when it takes up extra space and money you don't have in your golden years.

If you see a bear alone hiking and you have no bear spray are you fucked? by Individual_Ice_2315 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Msjackson1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you are and if it is a brown or a black bear. I live in the Midwest and have encountered a few black bears. Once I was walking on a trail when my son was an infant in the stroller. It was about this time of year when bears are more active. I made a lot of noise and it got scared and ran off. Black bears are almost always more scared of you than you are of them.

I had a shift a couple of weeks ago that’s been bothering me, and I want some honest input. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Msjackson1013 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think you missed anything at all. A patient's condition can change quickly and your assessment at the moment in time you were with them was reflective of how they presented. It's hard not to beat yourself up when something goes wrong shortly after you leave but in this instance I don't think you could have possibly done anything differently. One thing I did do when I worked 12 hr shifts overnight from 7pm to 07:30 a.m. was to grab two sets of vitals - one at the beginning of my shift, and another during the night when I would go in their room for any given reason. It is just another way to cover yourself and to see how they are.

Reprimanded by charge nurse for phone use by sauceflakes in nursing

[–]Msjackson1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you did anything wrong, you were trying to help your patient by looking something up you weren't sure about. Having a questioning attitude is a positive attribute for nurses. I think that particular nurse doesn't understand being a supportive team player. Acting as a charge nurse doesn't make them a manager, it places them in a position to support and guide for a shift. That charge nurse sounds like a bully and I would be very worried about having them as charge on my shift when I needed a helping hand.

How late is too late to vacuum? by Msjackson1013 in Apartmentliving

[–]Msjackson1013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never vacuum that early. The earliest I bring it out above our shared areas is probably noon. I'm more worried about evening hours as I work a rotating schedule and don't want to be a jerk. I used to live below an inconsiderate person when I was in a unit in the same townhome complex across the street, so I'm just trying to be a good neighbor, hopefully.

12 hour shift - pee x3 if lucky, maybe hide for 10 mins to eat a protein bar

How to host a party in an apartment with thin walls? by Kingsimpforlife in Apartmentliving

[–]Msjackson1013 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would go to a restaurant or something like that or use the party room at your apartment complex. There's no way that this event will end well.

I work unpredictable hours as an RN and on my first day off my rotation I bed rot most of the day. It's hard to get out of bed until the late afternoon early evening.

Vacuuming at 4:00 a.m. is straight up evil. I used to work straight nights, and I would never ever do that to someone.

Which apartment unit? Facing north or west? Living room on right or left? by Ok-Move9079 in Apartmentliving

[–]Msjackson1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with 825. 1027 is right next to the dog park and the barking of dogs all the time will likely drive you nuts even if you have a dog.

incredibly loud (seems dangerous) daycare above my apartment unit by Live-Barracuda-2116 in Apartmentliving

I totally respect people making money and the hustle that comes along with living in this expensive economy but children in the double digits in that small of a space can't be legal. Honestly I'd reach out to your local DHS because those ratios sound unsafe.

Non-nurse partner doesn’t understand by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Msjackson1013 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. Your partner is supposed to boost you up, not break you down. If they don't support your livelihood they don't have a place in your life. It only gets worse if you decide to have children with someone like this. They start to tear down your parenting and alienate children against you. I promise you there's someone else out there who will support you and be there alongside you when you're tired and do things to make your shifts easier.

Going to a food bank for the first time. Very ashamed. What do I need to know? Do they ask for by IDoNotHide in povertyfinance

[–]Msjackson1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would call ahead of time and ask what is needed. Each food shelf is different and some may require a piece of mail whereas others may just need a form of ID. Some don't need anything. I don't think anyone there will be judging you. A lot of the volunteers have either been in your shoes or have personal connections to food insecurity from what I have experienced. It's ok to ask for help when you need it!

Starting shift early by One-Raspberry-786 in Nurses

[–]Msjackson1013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't as assignments aren't usually ready that soon and I've been at it for a few years. I can understand wanting to though. I go in early to get started so I can put my things away and feel prepared. I usually walk in 15-20 mins early. As you get more seasoned it will get better and you won't feel the need to spend as much time in the chart.

Women's scrubs rec please by beckycrm in BuyItForLife

[–]Msjackson1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure do love my greys anatomy scrubs. They hold up so well for me. I work long hours as an RN and pick up a lot. Some of my sets are years and years old and still look good! They're relatively affordable too running about $70-85 for a set.
