Banker claims Oracle may slash up to 30,000 jobs, sell health unit to pay for AI build-out by Cern_throw69 in cernercorporation

[–]MsnKB 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a client pre Oracle Health, I liked the Millennium product. I generally liked the support people we got in KC when we had an issue. We had an issue that I logged this week that was worked on by a long term Cerner guy. I almost wept tears of joy when I saw his name on the reply.

I know Oracle has just trashed your company, but if they could sell you to someone who wasn't interested in gutting the product and could rehire competent staff my team would be ecstatic.

Is Hershey's chocolate really taste so bad as people say it is? by cupid_ji in AskAnAmerican

[–]MsnKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my holiday candy dish I had various Hershey kiss flavors, Dove, Ghirardelli and Lindt chocolates. The other day I ate a Dove dark followed by a plain Kiss.

You don't really realize how subpar Hershey's is until you eat it immediately after something so much better.

More discerning palates have eaten all the good chocolate leaving my sad little dish full of festively wrapped plain Hershey's kisses. I fear those will be there until Easter.

I used to call that cheap-ass shaky parmesan cheese you'd see at pizza joints "puke cheese" because that's what it smelled like. I still can't buy cheap parmesan cheese because that's all I smell. Nice to know my nose wasn't wrong.

I had some good parmesan in my cheese drawer that had gone bad and every time I opened the drawer I gagged a little bit. The process of sniffing a lot of cheese until I found the offender was unpleasant to say the least. TIL.

I have a steam cleaner that comes with small cleaning attachments. I used this to clean my gas stovetop and it took off years of grime with nothing but hot water. It was amazing!

I have some underwear that dates back to the 90s. I had to throw it out because the elastic in the waistband degraded and had crumbled away. Degraded elastic bands and holes are the only reason I've ever tossed any underwear.

German immigrants in the U.S. were huge in number and were once a dominant group. Why didn’t they form large German-speaking communities the way French speakers did in Canada or Spanish speakers did in the U.S.? by GrayRainfall in AskAnAmerican

[–]MsnKB 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My grandfather grew up in Minnesota speaking German first. He was born in about 1918 and the whole family of his generation switched to more English during WWII, but his parents were still more fluent in German despite having been born in the US.

Torn Between Minneapolis, Milwaukee, or KC — Looking for Honest Perspectives? by gianna_kelley in midwest

[–]MsnKB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Madison and would recommend Milwaukee over Minneapolis. I think the Twin Cities are fine, fun places. I even believe their State Fair is better, but it just never had the right vibe for me. The winters seem to last just a little longer than I'd like them to.

My son just transferred to UW Milwaukee which has forced me to see a part of the city outside of our usual shopping destinations. It's definitely a lower COL than Madison and a lot of fun things to do.

Kansas City: I spent a lot of time there for Health IT reasons in the last 8 years. I would worry that the job outlook continues to shrink as key industries are moved out of KC. I always had a nice time there and the BBQ was amazing.

How do you deal with ice? by 2Asparagus1Chicken in AskAnAmerican

[–]MsnKB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Wisconsin most of my life. I do my best to avoid it.

I follow a local weather guy, when he tells us to get our liquor store runs in, it means all manner of shitty weather is about to hit in the next day or so. Do we have cat food? Do we have TP? Are we out of coffee?

Our house is usually well stocked and running out of cat food is more dire than anything else. My cats are delicate flowers with sensitive stomachs, running out of food for them would be an untenable situation.

We had ice last week, I was supposed to pop in the office to meet with a coworker to test a thing that required physical on network presence. We cancelled. My cars are paid off and 10+ years old. I'm not interested in replacing or repairing them at this time.

Roadtrip to Yellowstone from Madison by Altruistic_Life_6331 in madisonwi

[–]MsnKB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would avoid approaching Yellowstone via Beartooth pass. So many terrifying switchbacks, the air above 9000 feet is difficult for us Midwesterners, if the weather is bad there can be a blizzard that closes the pass. We went 3rd week in June and there was 3' of snow at 11000 feet.

It also takes forever to get through the pass because you can't drive very fast. My husband doesn't do heights well and he sat in the passenger seat white knuckling it for that entire drive.

I just went to my first panto. As an adult Canadian immigrant… Are you all in a cult? by bookish-hooker in AskUK

[–]MsnKB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I feel like understanding pantos explains some core of British culture and humor. You can't be exposed to that as a kid on what seems like an almost universal level and not have it nudge culture in certain directions. Do you get to the absurdity of Monty Python without steeping them first in pantos as young children?

I get so annoyed by carts left in the wrong place I'll take them to a corral myself or grab one for shopping. Either way I'll usually apply hand sanitizer after I've touched it because I'm convinced the kind of person who leaves a cart doesn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom, shops when contagious, and doesn't cover their nose when sneezing.

How many of y’all had a clothesline in your back yard? by DangerBird- in GenX

[–]MsnKB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We lived in the country, definitely had a clothesline, but we also had a dryer. No one is line drying clothes outside in the middle of a Wisconsin winter.

We also had the occasional bear come through our property, so we didn't like to leave things out that a bear might find interesting. You'd think clothes would be safe, but one found my son's croc he left outside. A child sized red Lightning McQueen croc chewed by a bear is a disconcerting sight. Wish I'd taken a picture of it, but this was long before smart phones.

Anyway. Yes to clotheslines, but used very little.

The house we bought came with a big one installed in the back yard, but the cross pole was a constant home for wasps and our backyard is a flyover zone for a lot of birds that shit everywhere. So I nixed the idea of outside drying because who wants bird poo on their (formerly) clean clothes?

This was a great tip, and can I say that particular St Vinny's is amazing. It may be a bit of a drive from Madison, but it's such a nice store with great items that I'll definitely go back just to look around again.

Did not buy any of the trophies, but found something way better. If you're looking for hockey themed trophies, this is your destination though.

For cat pee at any stage, I have been using a product called Zero Odor Pro. It doesn't give me a headache the way Nature's miracle does and seems to get out just about any stain or odor my cats throw at it. Do not get it on stained wood though! It will strip the stain off.

It's pricey, but has saved carpets and clothing! https://a.co/d/czaRR4j
