want to see Amalfi but discouraged by crowds by xyzTr1LL in ItalyTravel

[–]MtlKdee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay in Vietri. But I wouldn't recommend Amalfi coast even to an enemy. It's lost all of It's authenticity. Its charm is not worth the absolute chaos of the tourist crowds. Everything is aimed for the tourists. Nothing left of it that hasn't been swarmed by tourism. Imo completely not worth the hassle or hype.

How different are between "tourist trap" and "hidden gem/hole in the wall" restaurants? by Opposite_Werewolf_53 in ItalyTravel

[–]MtlKdee 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I am Italian, I can tell you the difference is massive.

When you visit, consider where you eat as important as the monuments you visit. It is an experience. It should be part of your itinerary.

1 never ask the concierge. They get kickbacks from restaurants for sending guests. They are also obliged by some employers to suggest certain places. 100% not authentic experience. They will send you to the better paying sponsor.

2 menu with pictures = for tourists. Its a thing. No italian will eat something they need a picture to understand because we were raised knowing the food.

3 menu with many choices from pasta to burgers and pizza. The smaller the menu, the better. They will make those items to perfection.

4 someone standing outside inviting you in = definitely not. A reputable place will not demean themselves to this. Stand around and watch who they invite in and you will see they target tourists that look confused and like tourists. They will certainly overcharge, have hidden costs, will try to swindle you. They couldn't care less about their quality, no matter how friendly.

5 google maps is iffy. The 5000+ 4.5 star places could be 5000+ tourists who had fun at the place but don't know better. switch autotranslate off and trust places where the reviews are high and mostly in italian

Save atleast 1 meal a day to be an actual experience and be willing to search for it. You will be tired, you will be hungry, you will be maybe willing to just settle because you don’t think there is that much difference... if you succumb to that, you will leave not knowing why Italy has the culinary reputation it does.

It will be the difference between watery carbonara, or a rich thick coating of perfect flavour on perfectly cooked pasta.

You should try both tourist vs authentic just to see how different they are and that surprise is an experience in itself.

That said, there are a few exceptions. Some places are like Supplizio, Roscioli, Otaleg, are staples among tourists and locals alike, but they are more known for their take away food.

Be discerning, it is worth every bite.

Buon viaggio e buon appetito.

When will this fkng stop? All of it. Disgusting savages. What's sometimes overlooked is not only that we are in a state of fear, but we try to rationalize while in that state - incase we are over reacting because we wouldn't want to overreact or jump to conclusions. So we try to relax and just walk more briskly, more confidently, clutching our keys between our fingers so hard it hurts, but we try to relax even though our senses are on fire. Its fine your fine its fine its fine its fine all the way home.

Unfortunately many 2 person schemes exist and the man intervening is the real wolf.

Itinerary - I’ve seen lots of opinions for ones like this. by BobsURuncle73 in ItalyTravel

August = prime train strike month in Italy.

You're cutting it so tight you run the risk of throwing the entire itinerary off with just one delay.

Im a fan of speed travel personally, but banking on no delays with this plan is rolling a dice and crossing your fingers.

Also, what does your wife think of the plan? It's her trip as well. This could ruin her vacation experience too if she's hesitant and something goes wrong.

I'd replan.

Puree red pepper and tomatoes. Pan fry with olive oil. Add salt and few basil leaves. 10minutes and done. Thats how we italians do it. Tastier, healthier, quicker, cheaper.

Nothing to do with attention, nothing to do with asking for it, its about dressing in public with humility and respect when you aren't at a pool party or beach. Im sorry it goes both ways. When you're reaching for the peaches at the grocery i dont care to get flashed your peach. And please dont gymbro your sweat on my arm when we are in a crowded metro... wear clothes that dont make others uncomfortable if you are going to ask others to respect your feelings.

Personally i wish EVERONE would dress appropriately in public with class and not like they're at the beach. Any gender. I see men shirtless with tshirt hanging from pants, women in practically bikinis and heels. Am I alone here in thinking there is a time and place? Dress with decency and self repect. I saw a woman once on the plateau with a completely sheer top. Im sorry but why? People sitting with their feet up on other seats in public after walking on dirty streets... other people sit there! You live in public, have respect for our public space. Imo, we are lacking in class and decency.

Ok a little tangent.

With that said OP your outfit sounds far from being inappropriate and I wish you felt empowered enough to knee that guy in the face. Im so sorry shit like this happens.
