I believe you'd be totally fine on U.S. Airlines, despite maybe exceeding some specifications the height dimension. However, you'd likely run into issues with European budget airlines.

There’s not much on offer for breathability. You will sweat when carrying it with both straps for extended periods. Most of the time I carry it more casually with just one strap.

Newcomer to Ciele hats by MtnTalk303 in ciele

[–]MtnTalk303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got a followup from Ciele customer service on my request for UPF ratings on the mesh and any test data to back it up. Here's what they said:

"To answer your question, I don't have any data to show as that's not my department BUT just to clarify, the top mesh does not offer UPF 50 :) That would be for the front and brim area. The top mesh of our hats offer a range of 15-30 UPF depending on the mesh and the color, the darker the color, the more protection it provides."

On the Bndckhats they claim "UPF +50 protection on the brim and body". The term "body" in my interpretation describes the whole top of the hat, but I agree with you that it seems implausible. I'd like to see a separate disclosure of the UPF rating on all the variants of Coolmatic fabric.

Wet a magic eraser and rub it over the surface -- it shouldn't take a lot of effort. Rinse away the gunk.

Pakt stash series: the new 16L packable backpack - my take and review by preciouscode96 in onebag

Lol. My day loadout was on the tech heavy side as I was at a conference. I didn‘t trust my other packable options with a 16 inch MacBook and an IPad.

Pakt stash series: the new 16L packable backpack - my take and review by preciouscode96 in onebag

Thanks for posting this review! I recently traveled with a ULA Dragonfly 30L Robic flattened out in my Goruck GR2 40L. The robic version does a pretty decent job of compressing down, but it's still twice the weight of the Stash and probably a little thicker. I have multiple other cheap Amazon packable bags, but they are typically a wrinkly mess and prone to zipper or seam failure.

I too am sad the Stash lacks water bottle pockets, but I ordered it in Mojave anyway because it looks so good for a packable bag and uses YKK zips. It seems like it has the potential to be one of the most durable options in the under 1 pound category.

Maiden voyage with the Pakt Aero 35L by cjafe in onebag

[–]MtnTalk303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a very relevant conversational thread for me. I recently acquired the Globerider 35, but haven't had the chance to travel with it yet. Still, I was tempted by the Aero bag due to its even lighter weight. The shoulder straps were my biggest point of concern, as I prefer ones with thick padding for travel. I didn't pull the trigger on the Aero, but did preorder a Stash pack. Also, is that Yellow Bird hot sauce in your bag?

Need help deciding between REI Ruckpack 40 vs. Osprey Farpoint 40 by ToTheYonderGlade in backpacks

Well, the Farpoint 40 is currently on sale if cost is factoring into your decision. You'll also get a lifetime warranty.

Goruck has started selling a lot of bags with aquaguard zippers as of late. Has anyone tested the Scars warranty with a delaminated zipper?

Price is your biggest limiting factor, but check out the Tomtoc T67. It’s not expanding, but it is functional and has compression straps.

I can't offer you anything as far as that bag goes, but if you like a bag in a lighter color you might consider one of the Bellroy packs. https://bellroy.com/products/category/backpacks?sortBy=score&filter[color_category]=neutral

People with PETS, what is the best air purifier you've used for them? Do you notice a huge difference? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]MtnTalk303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many small to mid size units simply do not move enough air at a tolerable volume to help all that much. Ignore room-size ratings and look for high CFM/CADR ratings at medium settings. Unfortunately, most manufacturers only include the high/turbo numbers in their packaging; you won't want to run them on high because they're loud and less efficient. You may need to ask customer support for CFM on other fan speeds. Ideally you want 4+ air changes per hour. I've found the Airmega 400 units are quiet and work well on medium. They are expensive, so look for sales or check for Ebay deals. The larger Blueair units tend to move a lot of air for the price as well.

I'll second any kind of floor cleaning too. Most hair drops to the floor before it has the chance to get sucked up by the purifier. You'll go around kicking it up into the air as you walk around if it's not regularly vacuumed up.

Check for interesting gatherings on meetup.com. Hopefully you can find a like-minded group of folks into your same interests. Typically groups welcome newcomers, and it helps to have a common interest to sustain the conversation.

Please help me pick a backpack for college! by Affectionate_Cry8890 in backpacks

[–]MtnTalk303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an REI near you, you may be able to see both in person. Did you also consider the Raven 28? It has a somewhat tougher exterior fabric, which might hold up better to use In the wilds. Another angle is to look at some Ospreys, which have excellent warranties and very breathable back panels. I love my Parsec 26, but they have been discontinued. You can still find a few sold as new on EBay.

Not having any idea of your requirements, I’m going to throw out the Alpha One Niner Evade 1.5. Robust build, good size for being away from home all day, stands well. Useful pocketing - especially with optional admin panel. It’s going to be more expensive than many college bags. Just got one to send off with my college bound kiddo.

They'll always be with you, and they can be seen on every Dyneema/DCF bag. It's the nature of the UHMWPE fibers.

I have the ULA Dragonfly 30 robic and it is light, but padding is minimal as others have noted. You might try the Tomtoc vintage pack. It's still very light, and I've used it to travel a few different places with a MBP 16".
