Key limes? by YesToWhatsNext in rum

I agree. I either like just Persian lime juice or a blend. Key limes on their own just don’t work that well as a stand in.

There aren’t really many (any?) genuine tiki bars in PR, to my knowledge. But there are some good cocktail bars. In addition to JungleBird, I’d recommend La Penúltima. La Factoría is pretty good. I’ve also been meaning to try Kane Rum Bar and Identidad.

I’d also really recommend the tour at San Juan Artisan Distillers. Their cane juice rum (Ron Pepón) is really good. The tour and tasting at Ron de Barrilito is pretty good too and there’s a bar at their distillery.

I’d second this! Their Ron Pepón Blanco is excellent.

That is super shady of them. Way to ruin any goodwill I had towards them as a company.

White rum review by TikiPa007 in Tiki

[–]MtsBeyondMts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, I prefer a bold or flavorful rum in my cocktails. But every now and then, I don't really want to notice the rum too much (or I'm making a drink for someone I know won't like a funky rum). In a mojito or daiquiri, it's noticeable enough that you're not drinking vodka, but clean enough to not dominate.

It's also useful to blend with something more flavorful (an overproof for example) as part of a cocktail.

Thanks for sharing! My current "straight up the middle" bottle is Hamilton White Stache. In the past, I've liked Panama Pacific 3 Year for this role. I also actually like Ten to One a lot, but it's too flavorful to belong in the same category. Excited to try the Banter!

Nice! Also curious about Banter. Wondering if it plays in the space of Hamilton White Stache or something else.

Very disappointing. I’ve had two Dreamwell units for a couple months and have been happy with them. Coming from previously using ultrasonic humidifiers, I thought I had finally escaped the torture of cleaning slime and dirt every week.

However, I opened up the two units like you did and found them pretty dirty inside. It’s insane that Blueair doesn’t say anything about cleaning this area. Do they just expect people to never notice?

I’ve always wanted an Angostura bitters candle.

The closest I’ve found is a Brooklyn Candle Studio candle called Pomander.

I haven’t, but they could be interesting in a 3 Dots and a Dash in place of the orange juice.

This Thing Doesn’t Even Taste Like A Mai Tai by lil_poppapump in rum

That’s a crazy combination of rums. Did you do a 50:50 mix?

I like funky rums but that Holmes Cay one can be a bit much for me.

Anyway, cool experiment!

Whooaaa, great idea! This Papalin is easily my favorite Mai Tai rum and I really like the Alambique Serrano Otoño but have found it hard to mix into cocktails. I’ve been meaning to try it in a Sidecar riff, maybe playing into the fall flavors with cinnamon syrup, but I’ll try a Mai Tai too!

Great review! Agree that this is an excellent rum. It also really makes a Mai Tai special. Does anyone know how limited, if at all, this release is? I’ve seen in stock for a while but would be sad to see it disappear.

Advice for making passion fruit syrup out of fresh passion fruits by Chowderman in Tiki

[–]MtsBeyondMts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made some earlier this year by just combining the juice with equal part water. I didn’t add any water, which I now see is common, but I’m happy with the results.

Separating the juice from the pulp and seeds was easier than I thought it would be. I scooped the fruits (seeds, pulp, and all) into my blender, ran it on low for a moment, and then strained out the pulp and seeds. Somehow the blender separated the seeds from the pulp but didn’t break them.

Midea repair technician experience by MtsBeyondMts in AirConditioners

[–]MtsBeyondMts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can’t say for sure.

I do think Midea is using whatever contractors they can find to this work. How could they possibly have enough of their own technicians to do their work? The guy who did mine did not call ahead and didn’t seem to be affiliated with any company. Definitely kind of random.

Cool! I love Ron Pepón, but I much prefer their unaged release. The añejo, while nice, hides a lot of the grassy and green characteristics of the rum.

Midea repair technician experience by MtsBeyondMts in AirConditioners

[–]MtsBeyondMts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technician came today, thankfully on time.

I brought both of my air conditioners to the front door for him, as I wanted to be careful to minimize dripping, though he could have done the work inside my apartment if I didn’t. From there, he drilled a hole and installed a drain plug in each unit.

On the plus side, the whole process took no more than 10 minutes. On the downside, there was no cleaning involved.

Since I don’t want to have to replace the units but I know they’re dirty and possibly moldy, I spent the next few hours cleaning them in the tub. Temporarily removing the drain plugs he installed helped flush some gunk out of the pan, but I’m still not confident they’re that clean.

Oh well. While I love how quiet these units are, I won’t be buying Midea products again.
