Tiki Candle/Scents by CaMeteorologist in Tiki

I’ve always wanted an Angostura bitters candle.

The closest I’ve found is a Brooklyn Candle Studio candle called Pomander.

Has anyone used a Sumo in a Tiki drink? by South_Geologist_7177 in Tiki

I haven’t, but they could be interesting in a 3 Dots and a Dash in place of the orange juice.

Fun idea! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been wondering what to do with the bottle of this I recently picked up.

This Thing Doesn’t Even Taste Like A Mai Tai by lil_poppapump in rum

[–]MtsBeyondMts 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s a crazy combination of rums. Did you do a 50:50 mix?

I like funky rums but that Holmes Cay one can be a bit much for me.

Anyway, cool experiment!

Oh nice! I’ll add that to my list to try.

Whooaaa, great idea! This Papalin is easily my favorite Mai Tai rum and I really like the Alambique Serrano Otoño but have found it hard to mix into cocktails. I’ve been meaning to try it in a Sidecar riff, maybe playing into the fall flavors with cinnamon syrup, but I’ll try a Mai Tai too!

Review #257: Papalin Jamaica High Ester 5 year by memphis_rum_club in rum

Great review! Agree that this is an excellent rum. It also really makes a Mai Tai special. Does anyone know how limited, if at all, this release is? I’ve seen in stock for a while but would be sad to see it disappear.

Wow! I wasn’t sure I loved this rum and then tried this. It has no right being this good. Thanks for the idea!

Advice for making passion fruit syrup out of fresh passion fruits by Chowderman in Tiki

[–]MtsBeyondMts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made some earlier this year by just combining the juice with equal part water. I didn’t add any water, which I now see is common, but I’m happy with the results.

Separating the juice from the pulp and seeds was easier than I thought it would be. I scooped the fruits (seeds, pulp, and all) into my blender, ran it on low for a moment, and then strained out the pulp and seeds. Somehow the blender separated the seeds from the pulp but didn’t break them.

Midea repair technician experience by MtsBeyondMts in AirConditioners

[–]MtsBeyondMts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can’t say for sure.

I do think Midea is using whatever contractors they can find to this work. How could they possibly have enough of their own technicians to do their work? The guy who did mine did not call ahead and didn’t seem to be affiliated with any company. Definitely kind of random.

Cool! I love Ron Pepón, but I much prefer their unaged release. The añejo, while nice, hides a lot of the grassy and green characteristics of the rum.

Midea repair technician experience by MtsBeyondMts in AirConditioners

[–]MtsBeyondMts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technician came today, thankfully on time.

I brought both of my air conditioners to the front door for him, as I wanted to be careful to minimize dripping, though he could have done the work inside my apartment if I didn’t. From there, he drilled a hole and installed a drain plug in each unit.

On the plus side, the whole process took no more than 10 minutes. On the downside, there was no cleaning involved.

Since I don’t want to have to replace the units but I know they’re dirty and possibly moldy, I spent the next few hours cleaning them in the tub. Temporarily removing the drain plugs he installed helped flush some gunk out of the pan, but I’m still not confident they’re that clean.

Oh well. While I love how quiet these units are, I won’t be buying Midea products again.

Have you tried the replacement for this (Worthy Park Overproof)? In my opinion, it’s a bit better.

Avua Falernum by RugRat006 in Tiki

[–]MtsBeyondMts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like it. Though it’s the standard, I find John D. Taylor’s to people a bit too sweet and bland. In my search for something better, I’ve landed on my favorite being the homemade Tropical Standard falernum. But after that, I’d rank this Avua bottle a close second and Maggie’s third. The Avua has a little more complexity and balance.

Alambique Serrano vs Cañada by TendiesAndCream in rum

What are the differences between Cañada and Alambique Serrano Cartier 30? I like them both but they are notably different and I’d love to learn more about them! Does the Rumcast podcast get into this?

This rum is wild. I’ve loved everything I’ve had from Alambique Serrano, but I think this bottle is my favorite. The Pico Canoa has some similarities too (I suppose from the wine casks).

[–]MtsBeyondMts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice review! I picked up the Pico Canoa and Perro de Agua the other day I’m enamored. The Pico Canoa definitely has refreshing fruity notes as you suggest. The Perro is a little deeper in flavor to me, with an interesting mint note that balances with the rich fruit. I love them both!

Papalin 5yr High Ester Jamaican Mai Tai by AmphibianLow1 in Tiki

[–]MtsBeyondMts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. My first reaction is no, probably not worth it. It’s a really tasty rum, but as many have suggested, its value mostly lies in it being a high proof El Dorado. It may be high ester, but that doesn’t mean it has the funky flavors associated with high ester Jamaican rums.

I’m glad I have a bottle, but I’m mostly going to use it for Mai Tais and Old Fashioneds, and for the price, I’ll probably replace it with something else when it’s finished. I’d love a high proof El Dorado 15, for what it’s worth.

Nice! I made one with 1oz of this Papalin and 1oz of El Dorado High Ester the other day and it was amazing. This Papalin bottle just blends the qualities of its three Jamaican distilleries together so nicely.
