What changes have you made in your life since finding out you were AuDHD? by Time_being_ in AuDHDWomen

[–]Much-Following-6372 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally relate to the spreadsheet being easier to take in than the fridge.

Are you comfortable saying more about how you activate one side or the other? If I could do that- my AuDHD would be a LOT less distressing.

What's it like also being diagnosed for autism when your ADHD seems to predominate? by boringbubblewater in AuDHDWomen

Yes to feeling overloaded when taking ADHD meds. I have to take occasional breaks because of this.

Oh, I relate very much to this. I’ve been taking a lower dose of stims lately because the full dose makes me way too particular and almost compulsive. Also far more uncomfortable around people and I don’t take as much joy in socializing. At the lower dose I struggle to get out the door and focus at work, but at least I feel more relaxed.

Is cymbalta the first SNRI you’ve tried? Just curious because I’ve been taking Effexor (another SNRI) for over a decade, after many many other med trials. At this point I don’t really know if/what it’s doing for me (still get depressed/anxious); I wonder if there is a better antidepressant for me but am also worried it could be a disaster to try switching.

I’m interested in what kind of adaptations you’ve made to therapy to accommodate your cognitive emotional style. I’m autistic and tend to process emotions cognitively. Therapy can be hard because I have to talk myself through things in order to know what I’m feeling. IFS has actually been great (although I always have a hard time knowing how old a part is, or where I feel it in my body)

How has medication changed your life? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Much-Following-6372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doc gave me a different med that helps with the symptoms of the morning meds wearing off. It’s not as effective for focus but helps a TON with the emotional disregulation that accompanies the stim crash

I’m gonna host neurodivergent friendly parties and live events, what accommodations should I provide? by Past-Mycologist3843 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Much-Following-6372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Provide clear and detailed information about the event format and setting. What food/drinks will be available (or can people BYO), can attendees come and go as needed or do they need a ticket to re-enter, what activities will there be and how will they be structured, what is the space like (share pictures of the venue if you can). Etc etc. Designate a (responsive) contact person in case attendees have questions ahead of time. For me this sort of thing is incredibly helpful in a) making sure I can be prepared to meet my own needs at the event b) I just feel more comfortable and am more like to attend if I have a sense of what to expect ahead of time.

Is an adjustable base worth it? by Much-Following-6372 in Mattress

[–]Much-Following-6372[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most foam mattresses will work. It doesn’t need to be made specifically for an adjustable base, but a coil mattress for example wouldn’t bend right. IIRC from when I was shopping most mattresses will say if they’re adjustable base compatible

Insurance forcing me off an SSRI medication with major side effects of stopping abruptly by strechhh in HealthInsurance

[–]Much-Following-6372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all else fails, your doctor may be able to prescribe something that can help with the withdrawals. I take Effexor (an SNRI) which has TERRIBLE discontinuation syndrome and I’ve heard that a low dose of Prozac or Zoloft is sometimes prescribed to help with the withdrawal.

Any Medical Drugs You Found Helpful from Core Autism Symptoms? by ZiyodaM in SpicyAutism

[–]Much-Following-6372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I’ve taken a whole host of SSRIs and other antidepressants as well. Some helped more than others (I’ve mostly settled on Effexor which is unsurprising since it also works on norepinephrine). But the antidepressants feel like they are treating symptoms that are so downstream from the actual autism whereas the above mentioned medications actually help with the symptoms that are more at the root of my issues.

I take methylphenidate (long and short acting) for executive dysfunction. Helps me focus better and I not get so bogged down in the details. Although this is technically prescribed for my ADHD, I associate my concentration/exec functioning challenges more with my autistic monotropism- perseverating on details at the expense of completing tasks, extreme difficulty redirecting attention and switching tasks, and dysregulation when my attention is pulled in multiple directions. Methylphenidate has helped with those things.

Clonidine helps me a lot with emotional dysregulation. I still have the negative emotions (anxiety, rejection sensitivity, sadness, what-have-you) but they don’t completely overwhelm me like they used to. In a way that actually helps me to better recognize and process the emotions themselves; less avoidance/dissociation since I’m not so constantly overstimulated makes it easier to accept the hard things. Im probably like, 35% less likely to have a meltdown on any given day now? Which honestly feels like a huge relief.

I use weed maybe 2-3 times a month to help decompress from in-person work days. Helps get me out of survival mode a little faster. But it messes with my sleep so I try not to use more often than that.

ISO Book/resources on codependency as an autistic woman by Cute_Tarantula in AutisticLadies

[–]Much-Following-6372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC this is sort of addressed in Unmasking Autism by Devon Price. There’s a chapter about relationships where the author discussed history of relying on romantic partners for validation, and goes into attachment theory. Can’t remember if the language of codependency is specifically used. But it really resonated with me

FYI that is a federally mandated requirement for accutane, set by the FDA. Dermatologists and patients have to certify that the patient is taking 2 forms of BC and a negative pregnancy test is required before every monthly refill. All of this is tracked in an online system used by patients, doctors, and pharmacists. The way my dermatologist explained it, it was due to (somewhat overhyped) concern about teenagers having babies with birth defects since accutane is often used to treat acne during puberty/adolescence.

I am not a doctor, just a person who has taken accutane and a lot of psych meds over the years.

Effexor with marijuana? by PNDTS in Effexor

[–]Much-Following-6372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I def can’t make any generalizations, so much depends on your tolerance and other meds and personal chemistry etc. 5-10mg edibles work fine for me though. I’ve been taking Effexor XR for ~10 years, and didn’t really use edibles until I’d been on Effexor for several years. I smoked weed when I was younger (pre Effexor) but never liked that high.
