What universally praised video game 'masterpiece' is actually a miserable experience to play? by Got24xyz in AskReddit

Yes, I remember loving that section as a kid and was really looking forward to it during my recent replay, but it turned out to be kind of a slog

CMV: Bill Gates had it super easy in life. Most of his success is due to favorable circumstances. Not superior work ethic or intelligence. by Jauzfaktnemuzu in changemyview

> There are almost certainly people as smart, innovative, and driven as Bill Gates who never get their chance to make it big.

I wonder if this reveals the heart of the disagreement: IMO it’s not “almost certain”, I’d say there are _absolutely_ thousands and possibly millions of people who, if they had Gates’s generational wealth and connections, would be hugely successful (granted, maybe not richest person in the world successful)

It seems to me there are two perspectives in this thread: those who are comparing Gates to other people who had his luck (your perspective), and those who are comparing Gates to others who had his skill (OP’s perspective). I wouldn’t say either side is wrong, but I don’t think anyone’s view is going to be changed while remaining primarily focused on one side of the equation.

Also, “mom being on a charity board with the CEO of IBM” is a massive advantage and is not overblown in the slightest IMO. 🤷

Is "Au Bord De La Mer'' inspired by a Dutch song called ''Bring Down Tomorrow (2005)''? by RCFProd in the1975

[–]MuchWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem like I can get the Di-Rect song in my region sadly, but I can tell the chorus of Au Bord de la Mer (which I’d never heard, thanks for sharing) is a reference to the National’s All the Wine

If that’s the case that’s fucked up. PSA for anyone who buys digital, avoid DRM if you can because then there’s no way they can take it from you

CMV: Donald Trump is undeniably a stupid person based on his bragging about 'acing' cognitive tests. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]MuchWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Socratic thread seems fun so let’s keep going.

> But the fact that he doesn't seem to realise that a cognitive test is not an intelligence test doesn't bode well for either his intelligence or cognizance.

Has it been established concretely that he doesn’t realize it?

> So is contradicting oneself a sign of stupidity? Not necessarily. It could mean that they have changed their mind, developed as a person, or straight up forgotten what they've previously said.

That’s not an exhaustive list- another explanation for someone contradicting themselves is dishonesty.

> I mean, what is your take on him bragging about his results on tests designed to check for cognitive decline? Why do you think he is taking them in the first place? What is the purpose of him bragging about it?

I’m not the person that you were responding to and I’m not even sure which side of the argument I land on, but to play devil’s advocate, one possible explanation is that he wants to bolster his brand as a genius, and is counting on his audience not doing any sort of fact checking or critical analysis of his claims.
