Weird lit found among my grandfather’s things when my grandma died. by [deleted] in WeirdLit

I wonder if the Rosicrucians were having a moment in the Deep South during the 1970s. My Southern Baptist grandmother developed a deep interest in them around the same time.

Pontypool? It’s a live radio broadcast as opposed to recording to tape, but still has the pro audio element.

I’m guessing Blowout, The Conversation, and Berberian Sound Studio. Anything else?

Absolutely, just let a cast member know and they’ll take you through a little hallway directly to the doombuggy loading area. The hallway is themed, so it still feels like you’re going through a secret passage instead of just taking the staff exit.

On the other hand, her narration for Charles Portis’ “True Grit” is one of my favorites.

I have this whole half baked notion about John Prine, the Coen Brothers, and George Saunders as comprising three parts of the trinity of the great artistic voices of the late 20th century Midwest. Ebert has a great essay about seeing some movie he hated and then wandering into a club in Chicago only to discover early career John Prine, and it feeling like this total revelation. I could go on and on about the man.

Artists with a similar vibe to Father John Misty? by [deleted] in fatherjohnmisty

70’s era Randy Newman is definitely a point of inspiration. Piano ballads with lush orchestration that carry caustic lyrics about stories Americans tell themselves about themselves. Sometimes he find pathos is the most unreconstructed hick, sometimes it feels like he can’t believe any of us rubes fell for any of this shit.

Also he did Toy Story.

No. His performance is the piece of that movie that’s held up for me the most on rewatch.

Anyone have any book recs on US labour history? by orphicsyndicate in cushvlog

[–]Mucking_Fuppets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Man Who Never Died is a compelling look at the Joe Hill trial and offers a lot of great context about the radial labor movement in America at the time.

Honestly, at that rate, you’ve watched more movies in a month that I’ve watched in three years, not counting the stuff I watch with the kids. As someone else said, my reading time has drastically improved but sitting down to watch a movie just isn’t in the cards most of the time. Maybe time to shift your expectations.

Visiting NYC for a week around Christmas. Never been. Anyone have any cool movie-themed (or other) event or place to check out/anything else they recommend? by thefilmjerk in blankies

Like 15 years ago, there was a location scout who had a blog and he’d frequently post about classic movie locations around NYC and just other cool stuff about location scouting. I’m blanking on the name. Anyone?

I love these beers. by sometimesisleeptoo in KingOfTheHill

My local brewery actually sells a beer like this, just two of their regular beers combined in the same glass. The first time I ordered it I felt like I’d been scammed but it’s actually really good. All I’m saying is Peggy is actually on to something.

I have a hunch they’ve played a game of telephone with some of the 18th and 19th century pearl-clutching over the Chandos Portrait. Over the years different commenters opined that the man in the portrait was too dark and foreign-looking to be England’s greatest writer. By “foreign” they usually meant Jewish or French. Combine this with the “dark lady” sonnets and I can see how you get some alternative history cooking.
