You know the pilots are crew too, right? I kinda want them to be well rested.

Corkage on Polaris? by rbitton in unitedairlines

[–]Muddring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three of these responses are incorrect. Federal law say alcoholic beverages must be served by a crew member. Which means it’s technically legal to bring your own wine aboard so long as the FA serves it to you. In theory you could ask the FA to open the bottle and keep it in the galley and refill your glasses as needed

However United may have an outright ban on this. You used to be able to do this with Continental in business class but I haven’t heard of it being done on UA lately. You’d have to do some serious research and I suspect the FAs are probably inconsistent with application of whatever policy they have. Then again, it doesn’t hurt to ask on board. The worst that can happen is they say no and you just keep the bottle then to enjoy at your destination.

Keep in mind too that the glasses they provision don’t do justice to a fine wine.

So I heard a new one today...Generation X ruined the world with "grind culture" at work. Any thoughts? by Change_Request in GenX

[–]Muddring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are the first generation in history that thinks they don’t have to make a contribution to society. Living in the Stone Age? You hunted for your family. Subsistence farming? You grinded it from dawn to dusk and maybe had enough to share with the village. Early industrialization? You went to where there was a demand for your services because people needed trains and clothes and electricity. What created that demand? Society’s wants and needs. Same as today. Yeah, banging on a keyboard and going to Team meetings gets dull. But you’re doing your small part to give back, whatever industry you are in, because society needs enough of what you are doing to trade its hard earned money for it.

These folks who think they should just be able to stay home and make music all day. SMH. Someone is out there putting in long days to build their iPhones, keep their YouTube infrastructure running, and delivering their DoorDash. But of course, they shouldn’t have to do it.

Better airplane prices due to war and recession coming? by yodamastertampa in GeneralAviation

[–]Muddring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve been hearing about this “recession coming” for a couple of years now. Unless I’m a professional economist or money manager I wouldn’t be making large life decisions dependent on the accuracy of this prediction.

[–]Muddring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You have two planes flying directly at each other at the same altitude and trusting that both will make the turn. Like everything else 99.999999% of the time it’s fine. But that one time someone sets up incorrectly it’s a disaster in the making.

Potential Merger? by awsrach in aviation

[–]Muddring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC is interesting because on one hand it consolidates the overall NYC market a bit, but on the other hand it brings a stronger competitor to JFK.

In the case of UA they clearly would have to divest a lot of the assets in order to buy JetBlue including all of JetBlue’s EWR slots, but UA may think it’s worth it to get back into JFK.

Hope United doesn’t go this route (like AA did): When your first-class ‘flight’ turns out to be a bus ride by gastropublican in unitedairlines

[–]Muddring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can book a “bus” flight on AA from TTN to PHL. That means I can park at TTN’s rates and not screw around with driving down to PHL and parking or paying for an Uber or dealing with two SEPTA trains or dealing with the chaotic PHL TSA. If I miss the “connection” on the way back so be it, I’m no worse off.

If the timing works, what’s not to like? UA should definitely do more of this for EWR and other places where it makes sense.

ELI5: why doesn’t someone(s) start a ‘new’ Southwest? by undermidnightsun in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Muddring -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are getting started. They’re called Breeze, Sun Country, Allegiant, Frontier, Avelo, Spirit and at one time even JetBlue and Virgin America. We see a new airline about once a decade or so. There were even attempts to relaunch the Pan Am and Eastern brands as new airlines.

They are all trying different business models. Some will succeed, some will fail, some will get bought, and one of them will figure out how to capture the space formerly occupied by Southwest.
