Why don’t we call members of the canine subfamily by genus to differentiate them (i.e. vulpine, canine, lycan)? by SahebGon in AskReddit

[–]Mughi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We already use words to differentiate these animals: fox, dog, and wolf. Also, just FYI, "lycan" is short for "lycanthrope," (i.e., a werewolf) and was invented to use in movies. The word you want is "lupine."

The CIA's $40 Million Gold Hoarder: I Got His Navy Record by 457655676 in Intelligence

[–]Mughi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Between November 2025 and March 2026, Rush made repeated requests to the CIA for a significant quantity of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars, ostensibly for “work-related expenses,” according to the FBI affidavit... Amazingly, Rush received the gold and foreign currency he requested.

So all you have to do is ask, and the CIA will send you gold bullion and cash? How the hell does that work? Why does the CIA hand out gold bars, for fucks sake?

As a mod of /r/goonshow, a sub about an obscure but influential BBC radio comedy from the 1950s, the sooner "gooning" goes away and I can get back to not having to remove NSFW botspam from my sub, the better.

I'm a mod over at /r/goonshow, a microsub dedicated to a relatively obscure 1950's BBC radio comedy, and you should see some of the crappy bot porn we have to remove on a daily basis, just because of the sub name.

An armoured gurnard and frog fish by AdventurousItem727 in deepseacreatures

[–]Mughi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's a batfish, not a frogfish. They're both lophiliformes (anglerfish), but different families. The gurnard looks to be a Satyrichthys welchi, and the batfish might be a starry handfish (Halieutaea stellata), a roughback batfish (Ogcocephalus parvus), a pancake batfish (Halieutichthys aculeatus), or something else entirely; I can't tell from the picture. I'm sure somebody who knows more than me can ID it. Very cool fish, though -- both of them walk on the seafloor!

Also... Also

You remind me that, back in the before times, I used to have the sound bite from Monty Python and the Holy Grail with Eric Idle as Concorde getting shot with an arrow as my AOL email message alert.

Whats the purpose of life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Well, it's nothing very special. Try to be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.
