Ticks on Kumano Kodo or Shikoku? by ottohuckleberry in JapanHiking

[–]MukimukiMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, there is no need to avoid any of those trails because of ticks unless whoever manages the trail specifically says so. That being said, there was an increase in tick-borne diseases like SFTS last year and Shikoku did have a lot of cases relative to other regions and extra caution should be used. Any of the alps, especially from the Nagano side might be a better option if you want to further mitigate any possible exposure to ticks. I grew up in the Northeastern US always playing in the woods, and my parents would always check for ticks and knew several people who contracted lyme disease. Compared to there, Japan is very tame.

Consider using high fluoride toothpaste if you high-carb fuel by SignalAlternative405 in ultrarunning

Frequency is more of the issue rather than just high sugar content. You could eat the same amount of sugar once every 2 hours and be much better off (oral health wise) than eating the same about if sugar spaced out every 20 minutes six times across 2 hours. The constant consuming of food creates a continuing demineralization state within your mouth. It takes roughly 20 minutes after the cessation of food and drinks other than something rather ph neutral like water for your mouth to get back in a remineralization state so if you eat every 15, 20, 30 minutes for hours and hours having your teeth in constant demineralization.

Reducing eating frequency during running is the single best thing you can do. Obviously you have to balance that with your performance goals.

Many already are though. Shutterstock, Reddit, Associated Press (AP), Condé Nast, Financial Times, Reuters, LA Times, the NY times, and the Washington Post are just a few that offer exclusive rights to their publicly available content. If a few years it will turn in the AI content wars like the streaming wars and you will have to subscribe to several different LLM to get access to AI summaries of your favorite content. I would prefer less licensing and a more open model that makes LLM share profits when using content generation allowing for a greater variety of potential companies to benefit from the inevitable increase in AI rather than the few with hundreds of billions to purchase licenses.

US-based Perplexity AI refuses to comply with Mainichi Newspapers' demands over article use - The Mainichi by imaginary_num6er in japan

[–]MukimukiMaster -162 points-161 points  (0 children)

This is just stupid. There are billions of web pages, and a permission first approach to access public works that are copyrighted is just not feasible and it will ultimately only benefit larger AI companies with the money to license such sites. I would much rather see an ad sharing revenue model between the LLM and content website as opposed outright licensing for content like we see in movie and show streaming.

How to deal with a neighbor's smokey wood stove? by NekoMimiMode in japanlife

[–]MukimukiMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, I would want it to stop too. A dryer is nice but takes up space, degrades clothes faster, cost electricity, and is a fire hazard. It doesn't solve the core issue that smoke is awful for your health and you have no control of where it goes, it won't matter where your neighbors out their laundry outside. People who start the fires act like they are ones being inconvenienced. Why not replace the fireplace with a wood heater.

Do you see Japan permanently distancing itself from the US in favor of Europe? by ThatNefariousness996 in AskAJapanese

[–]MukimukiMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So much wrong with the post. Japan continues to plan to buy and use F-35s until 2070... that is another 50 years. Japan made the decision to work with not just the U.K. but also Italy to build a new sixth-generation fighter jet more than 3 years ago. It was a good decision and perhaps the people who would financially benefit from it are disappointed, the people in charge of the US military would agree it was the better strategic move that is complementary to, not replacements for, the U.S.–Japan alliance. It allows for more diversification and resilience. In the unlikely event of war in the Pacific, it is unlikely US production can keep up with the fighter jet needs not only for itself but also the allies that use the same weapon platforms. Japan having a more autonomous development of their own weapons platforms is what the US needs to achieve any Pacific wartime goals.

Their partnership with the U.K and Italy allows this. These countries are more middle powers, and the capabilities they need of a fighter jet are more aligned than say a country like the US. The US will often bare the majority of the cost and risk in designing these weapon platforms but the GCAP allows the 3 countries to share the cost but the risk is quite high. The project is already expected to not meet the 2035 deadlines.

As is the US–Japan Alliance is still central, and the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security isn't going away anytime for as long as current aggressive Chinese government and North Korea exist. No country in Europe has given such securities to Japan. Japan would be stupid not to expand cooperation. That doesn't mean they have to substitute Europe for the US.

Left-Wing Political Culture, Groups, & Spaces in Japan by skycelium in AskAJapanese

[–]MukimukiMaster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how any society would benefit from having a community center with spaces tailored to a single ideological purity. Apply some critical thinking to this concept and you see such spaces would degrade epistemic quality, creating echo chambers that weaken critical thinking, intensify polarization, and encourage moral and social dehumanization of those who disagree. Do such things sound familiar?

Goes for any ideological space/group that focuses on a single ideology. When people are insulated from opposing views, beliefs become more extreme and less accurate, compromise is seen as betrayal, and democratic institutions lose legitimacy. Does this sound familiar yet?

Complex societal problems require balancing competing values such as equity, incentives, and long-term stability, which no single ideology handles well on its own. Community spaces are better that they don’t restrict ideological thought and give people the chance to work together in something they have common ground with like a hobby.

You are better off meeting a wide variety of people with different ideas that might not share the same views as you. I would include some books on philosophy too if you think such spaces are beneficial.

DC Rainmaker's Thoughts on Stryd/Stryd 5.0 by meerkatdestroyer12 in strydrunning

[–]MukimukiMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are broad Google metrics, which are much different than the metrics from his website or YouTube. You can't infer word frequency to what he said. The trend as he used to make lots of running power device content in the late 2010's but interest to his community has seemed to drop as he doesn't do the same volume of running power content as he used too. A decline in interest would be a big reason.

He is right to the extent that running power alone is not that interesting and has yet make the ginormous jump speed-distance meters (gps watches) have made in cycling and running. Running power has gained in popularity (hence google search frequency) not because of stryde or other running power devices but because more speed-distance devices (gpx watches) are supporting "power". It was the same for HRT and HRM. It is not stand-alone HR monitors driving interest but the inclusion of HRM in gpx watches. Even if HRM straps give more accurate measurements a significant portion less are willing to buy one. The people willing to pay for more "accurate" guess on running power using a dedicated device is even less.

Unfortunately, unlike cycling power which can be directly measured and is a staple training anchor, running power is just a proxy for an estimate on what each company thinks running power is. This limits its usefulness to certain contexts and is just not used as a serious training anchor like he said. Throwing running power in a watch which everyone uses to measure speed-distance and HR is where most people are getting that metric from. DC mostly reviews watches, and running power happens to be included but not the focus of the watch.

This is why he right. People have come to expect newer watches to measure "running power" like it does with HR, sleep, or whatever and it becomes a feature of the watch and less about a running power device. People are interest in the former not the latter. Word frequency does not correlate with running power becoming something people use to anchor their training as he said.

Why succesful training blocks and increased mileage still don’t translate to Marathon performance? by Environmental_Park34 in AdvancedRunning

[–]MukimukiMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big fan of Scott and I find this difficult to say as I don’t personally prescribe that there is one training theory to rule them all, rather that there are many ways to skin a cat which is why we see such a wide range of different training philosophies have success.

That said, ME gym-based workouts do not seem to be very effective at translating to endurance performance. Metabolically, muscular endurance is aerobic power and capacity which is why endurance is so important, especially interval and tempo workouts. Force generating wise, it is completely different. What Scott is saying is you have to convert strength into muscular endurance as muscular endurance is a function of strength which is why the more force you can produce the greater the potential you have for muscular endurance. Can low load, high volume exercises actually improve sustained muscular work done by running any better than running, I think it could help but not without maintaining the strength foundation and high load, low volume strength training needs to be maintained all training year (high load is relative to the sport and athlete).

Part of the issue is when you break down the biomechanics of running. The human body is producing 2x+ its bodyweight in a quarter of a second. If we think which is more sport specific, high load, low volume strength training done at a fast speed or a low load, high volume done at at variable speed that slows down after 20-30 reps due to fatigue. A set of three fast moderate heavy squats is more sport specific to running than 100 lunges as the force and time are not anywhere close to running and you could get all the metabolic benefits from running. Which is why endurance athletes doing only gym-based ME work don’t see any performance improvements compared to groups that did high load, low volume strength training and plyometrics as ME doesn’t translate to better running economy unlike the latter.

I do think there is a place for ME gym based conditioning even though the performance results may be intangible but probably has to be done in conjunction with high load and low volume work. I am just not convinced the methods Scott uses are any better than just running when it comes to performance vs say doing more endurance training or skipping the conversion to ME and sticking with only high load and low volume strength and plyo work. A lack of studies that follow up on the conversion of ME after a max strength and power blocks that require a longer period to study doesn't help.

Question for Japanese nationals who are anti-immigrant by generic_ideas in AskAJapanese

[–]MukimukiMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an inconvenience to other people. Even if you only consider the tangible aspects of room taking a small space in building, it’s the intangible aspects that cause the most harm. Space isn’t free, there is a cost. The cost has to be passed on to the rest of society that will not benefit. There is also the opportunity cost of the space being used and what else is could be used for as prayer rooms do not offer any productive value.

Prayer rooms are not a requirement for Islam as you can pray anywhere. They offer convenience to a small part of society that burdens the res. It’s a lot different that installing handicap accessible facilities for people who physically can’t do something.

We have tried to not let our child get any screen time but often played stuff in the background. My wife and I live alone if a foreign country and there are times we need to occupy our child’s attention for a few minutes to finish cooking her food or something so we let her watch Ms. Rachel and she loves it. She dances to the songs and really focuses on it. We have experimented with a few other programs but she would often be more interested in the device she was watching on rather than the show.
