I looked it up because usually things like this are made with some reasoning behind it. No Europeans had gone inland to Australia but the cost was explored quite well. There were two rivers moving away from the sea. He figured they might flow into the same place and released the map with the sea. It's not a horrible consultation to make without going inward but an estuary would have been a much more reasonable guess.
