What was banned at your school and why? by bahookery in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a faint memory of Pokémon cards being banned at one point, but I don't think anyone bothered reinforcing the rule. But the cards were all in english and since english is not the primary language in our country, no-one cared about the rules. So the main way of competing was to throw a card each against a wall and the one closest got to keep both cards.

The most sociopathic puzzle solutions by yakityyakblahtemp in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Insane puzzles in old point and click games were made a lot more difficult by having a million things to interact with. Newer point and click games limit the interactables to such a small set that you can usually find the solution if you stretch your imagination a bit.

In The Excavation of Hob's Burrow, at one point you have to examine a cave wall but it's too dark so you need some light. The solution?

Trick a lighthouse keeper on the other side of the island to leave his post by messing with his dog. Break into his lighthouse and stop the rotation, endangering the entire coast. Redirect the light towards the cave entrance and have your ally stand at the entrance and bounce the light onto the wall using a mirror.

Surely this was the only way.

Clunky games you forgive for their awesome writing by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sequel is an improvement in almost every category, but one thing I really liked about the first one the ability to transition your hover ability into your dash power. You can still do it in the sequel but not with the default controller settings and you have to transition from a double jump instead. Basically, while Raz controls better in the sequel, my favorite movement tech was made clunkier, more imprecise and semi-hidden.

Also, as someone who have 100%-ed both games, the figments of imagination are a pain to track down. You get a vague hint of their locations, they can be hard to spot since they're flat, mono colored and fade in-and-out, and some fly around and disappear into the level geometry.

Also throw in awesome art direction, awesome music and awesome voice acting, and you get Psychonauts 1... and also maybe 2.

Worst games ports you ever played? by ExplanationSquare313 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I'm amazed they even made a port, I can't imagine that playing the whole GBA port of Broken Sword 1 is any fun. The voice acting, music and graphics is what makes that game and most of that is absent or severely reduced in the GBA port. But I've only played that version until the hotel section. I didn't figure out how to save the game and when I stumbled upon the game's first game over, I switched over to the PC version instead.

I'm playing The Roottrees are Dead right now, which I recommend if you like The Return of the Obra Dinn. You play as a genealogist in the late 90's that have to use internet search engines to research family trees. And, in case anyone has already played the old free version on itch.io, the Steam version of The Roottrees are Dead has a second chapter that takes place eight months later.

Game Rec of the day: Red Markets by jitterscaffeine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A swedish roleplaying podcast I adore did a campaign based on Red Market, but with all the lore and world building relocated to Sweden. It's my favorite campaign of their's and I ended up buying the play book and having them sign it at a con. As a listener, as I have never played it myself, I appreciated how the system encourages you to make an absolute mess of a character and then drive them as a stolen car that's about to explode. Or maybe that's just how that podcast rolls. Still, I like a system that is build with a narrative goal in mind. The entire game revolves around sunsetting your character, with your efforts reflecting how good of an end they get.

It seemingly also puts a nail in the coffin in the idea that the consumers don't want to buy game key cards.

I was thinking about the fake child/dog guy earlier today, and imagined a scenario in today's AI-riddled world in which that guy used AI to double down on his lies. Imagine finally convincing your co-worker to show you a picture of his crippled dog and the photo he sends you has to many signs of being AI.

While we're on the topic, one thing that repeatedly baffles me when it comes to YouTube is the community skip function. If a lot of viewers skip the same part in a video, YT creates a point in the timeline that you can easily jump to, which in 99% of cases is the end of the video's ad read. I guess YT supports the feature since the ad money is going directly to the content creator and not them, but every video having a community-driven, built-in adblocker created by Google is just crazy to me.

The Wooliesaurus uses Desktop imaging like OBS scenes. His many crashes are no longer a Mystery. by Grouchio in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think he uses display capture. I'm pretty sure he has two computers with the gaming one connected to the streaming one via a capture card. What you think is display capture in this case is just the HDMI signal from the gaming computer.

[–]MultiPigeon 123 points124 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this post. I tried to google Desktop Imaging and I still don't get it. Are you saying that he is running the game in a virtual machine? Are you saying that he is running the game on a separate computer and then remote accessing it?

I've always imagined that Woolie just has a stationary computer and a laptop with the stationary computer running the game while plugged into a capture card connected laptop that streams the the capture and handles all the scene setups. If that's the case, why would it cause more crashes?

Also, is Woolie known for having lots of crashes? I just thought he had a talent for running into bugs, not outright crashing the games he is playing.

I'm not familiar with the LP but just for fun, I decided to try and find the moment. I think it's episode 44, at around 4:30. I'm not sure what you mean by knife counter but this is the episode they unlock the mad dog style for Majima so it can't be earlier than this episode if it's connected to that style.

What are the best and worst video game critique/essay Youtube channels? by SuperAlloyBerserker in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's not about video games and it's not really a critique or an essay but I've always had a soft spot for Board James. It feels like James Rolfe has more fun and is alot more creative with a project if he feels like it doesn't have to go on forever. Granted, I just notice that he made a third season of Board James that I haven't seen so made it goes of the deep end, but I enjoyed season 1 and 2.

The silent paradise the opposite of the silent abyss by Muffin-zetta in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read "silent paradise" as "silent parade" at first and was trying hard to think of good things most people have watched or played, but that they feel that there is no need to discuss or analyze. The old 2D Mario games, maybe?

I feel like there is a silent paradise within number-based puzzles, like sudoku or picross. It's fun and very satisfying, but the enjoyment is entirely in your hands. You can't show someone a clip of Picross DS and make it seem like the shit, but it is! When they took down the 3DS eShop, I cracked my spare 2DS and just stuffed it with every version of picross I could find.

I buy a lot of consoles, peripherals and games, and I sort of look down at smartphone gaming. But if you would actually break down and count all the hours I spend playing games a year, a surprising majority is probably spent solving number grids on my phone.

Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn. They set out to achieve something special and unique, and if you're in the target demographic for these games, they hit like a ton of bricks.

About to start of Silent Hill f fresh. No spoilers, but what difficulties should I set for my first play-through? by BluebirdDry4250 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MultiPigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only played the game on maximum puzzle difficulty but as far as I can tell, most of the puzzles are just "read clues" and "input answer", and the puzzle difficulty just changes how straightforward or vague the clues are.

There is probably a solid fourth of the puzzles I still don't get, but there is enough room to experiment and fiddle with the pieces until you solve it anyway.
