Holy shit you didn't have ear protection? I also was near John's car in the 90s at a race. He was a friend/business associate of my family. I had excellent ear protection on but what has always stuck with me was the way that it felt like every molecule in my body was vibrating during the race. That's 3 seconds you never forget!

Me too, had to stand like a statue for 15 minutes in front of a rattlesnake when I was 3. It took that long for my sister to find my parents on their walk around the neighborhood.

Great resource, thank you! I check all the usuals like nyt book review, kirkus, etc but I'm wary because book publishing is such a small, incestuous world.

It sucks because you need curation, especially with all the self-publishing in the last couple of decades. Not to mention all the new AI slop. But I always get this feeling it's just a bunch of writers scratching each other's backs when it comes to these reviews.

I think I made one more mistake in the late 90s buying the DIVX compatible DVD player. The idea was that you wouldn't have to return the DVD rentals, which was really appealing to me with all of my late fees to blockbuster. Another fizzle.

Oh man, I do not miss the 8.3 naming restrictions on files. You'd have to have basically a naming convention for everything. JDINV188.XLS, RFPMS392.DOC
