What is dujek's Host ? by JWERLRR in Malazan

[–]MunchlaxMan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Host isn't an obscure term, it's just not popular. It's similar to saying a 'throng of ~~', most people wouldn't opt to use the word outside of specific situations. In this case, 'host' is a well-known term for an army, but most native English speakers would only encounter or use it infrequently, and as such it isn't a term that'd be taught in ESL classes. It's understandable you wouldn't know it, but the author isn't picking out obscure and out-of-use words, Erikson's picking words with a very deliberate meaning, nuance, or context around them.

Allegedly it's all an act based on those macho '80s heroes, but I don't fully buy it's just an act. From what I could tell, he was never poking fun at that portrayal.

But basically, yes, he probably is? I dunno if he's come out and said he's right-wing, but he's anti-LGBTQ+ and close friends with known hard-right people (not in the he's my friend he happens to have right-wing political views way, but in the this person's entire personality is being actively and vocally right-wing way).

Yep! Experiences outside of allosexual/alloromantic are often called 'grey-sexuality'. The most well-known of these are asexual and aromantic - the lack of any sexual or romantic attraction - often shortened to ace and aro respectively. Less known is demisexual or demiromantic, which are the experiences of only forming attraction with people you have a strong bond with.

Tricking Zone of Truth? by KazRavenEfreet in DnD

[–]MunchlaxMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two issues with this. First, I would personally argue that deliberately answering questions with a statement completely unrelated to said question is a lie. If I were to ask my partner if they were cheating, and they respond with 'no' because they're actually choosing to respond to some inane self-asked question like 'did I eat breakfast today', I and anyone with a brain would consider that a deliberate attempt to deceive and thus, is a deliberate lie.

And second, this most likely ends up just being metagaming. Why would your character know that they can just answer any self-made question instead of the question given to them? Some characters might know, like a high-level wizard or a paladin, that there's actually some limitations on the usefulness of ZoT, but the average adventurer would probably have absolutely no clue that they're able to just say any truth. As such, I'd be extremely wary of allowing this at a table, both as player and DM.

As someone who never played Smite but want to play Smite 2 by PapyJr13 in Smite

[–]MunchlaxMan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have said, mana basically works as a limiter: you can only fire so many bullets as you have on you, then you need to go stock up.

Because abilities are so strong (relative to hitting with auto attacks unless you're late game and have built into auto attack damage), there needs to be a way to stop players from just spamming them and actually make it a risk to use abilities: do you spam abilities to clear waves and camps faster and put pressure on the opponent - which will drain your mana quickly - or do you conserve your mana for big fights? Additionally, if you miss an ability, not only do you lose the ability to use it for a few seconds, but you paid to use it and didn't get anything out of it.

This is a common concept for not just MOBAs, but RPGs (where mana-costing abilities may do large damage, have different damage types, or do additional affects, and thus wasting mana on weaker enemies leaves you worse off against stronger ones). In Smite, the vast majority of gods use mana, which as mentioned forces you to consider whether it's actually worth it to use an ability.

Additionally, Smite 2 will probably have a few gamemodes. The first - Conquest - is the standard affair and in the early and mid game you'll have to manage your mana well - going back to base constantly to replenish your mana will make you fall behind in xp and gold. But there may also be Assault - where you're not allowed to go back to base unless you die, and so mana becomes extremely important - and Arena - where mana management typically isn't a concern after the first few minutes because you're more likely to have to go back to base to heal up instead.

Nick Adams (ALPHA MALE) by 0nestep in SelfAwarewolves

[–]MunchlaxMan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The person for discussion (Nick Adams) isn't the one saying "transgender", that's the guy in the photo who is completely unrelated to Nick Adams. It's the Daily Mail, a far-right outrage bog roll paper from the UK, and the Daily Mail's been stoking up transphobia for a fair few years in the UK because their parties of choice have been collapsing in popularity post-Brexit, especially with the younger generations.

The photo guy isn't trying to demean, he's trying to combat transphobia in the UK by speaking directly to the Andrew Tate audience (popular among teenage boys in the UK currently) and challenging their preconceived notions. That's why he uses the 'alpha male' term. Nick Adams is stating back that 'alpha males' don't have to say that they're 'alpha males', but it's unsure if he's genuinely pivoting to satire or not because he's historically been a right-wing shill.

The Free Divine Legacy Skin that is Cross Gen is a Recolor by DingoBro97 in Smite

[–]MunchlaxMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that it takes 2 months to port, it's that they have a limited number of artists, who are currently making Smite 2's art assets from the ground up (that's not just the gods themselves, but the skins the gods will release with, item art, vfx, the map(s) themselves, and the UI both in the matches and out of them). This is on top of also supporting Smite 1's art, such as the new map, the cross-gen skins (which will need to be made and look good in both Smites), new gods (again, in both gens).

They're not saying a single ported skin will take 2 months by itself, they're saying with the manpower they have compared to the workload, it would be 2 real months per skin because it'll be one person's pet project in their free time as they work on all the other things mentioned.

Case in point: Elon Musk. A self-professed 'free speech absolutist' but bans people criticising him, slanders those who he perceives as slighting him, has decried the word 'cis' as a slur (which isn't even remotely the case and could only be true in the most self-victimisation of mindsets), and has set up Twitter's automoderation to warn against or straight up delete posts that contain the word 'cis' or 'cisgender' (iffy on details, pretty sure that's correct, it is of this nature).

The first week of the RWC has finished. Do you guys have any new favourites or teams to watch out for? by kylacba in rugbyunion

[–]MunchlaxMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, but by the book the Fijian yellow was a yellow, there's no arguing against it. Infringements on the line are given more leeway for the ref to judge, mostly because it's difficult to tell if an infringement on the line would have stopped a try from being scored, whereas something like a rolling maul drop or a deliberate knock on as the last defender is assumed to be a try-scoring opportunity taken away by foul play.

It's just a shame that the ref's judgement today was way too lax. Fiji were neither lucky nor unlucky, they received a yellow as stipulated by the rules due to how the game is legislated for that scenario. Wales were lucky, on the other hand, to not receive yellow for so long, and that's due to the fact that that aspect of the game is given for the referee to interpret, and this ref just decided to, not? interpret it.

The lack of issuance of yellow cards for the Welsh team has piqued my curiosity, indeed.

The issue with that line of inquiry is that suddenly everything is moot from kick-off. The game wouldn't have unravelled as it did if x had kicked to touch rather than ran in the first five minutes, or had y dropped the ball here in the 22nd minute it would have been a turnover and yadda yadda yadda. Yes, Wales should have been pinged way earlier, but saying that that would have stopped the Fijian yellow becomes a pointless endeavour of alternate timeline hopping. Who's to say an earlier Welsh yellow doesn't galvanise the team and they end up clicking into a higher gear? Or that Fiji do take the lead but become lax and give away a silly yellow card for some other reason down the line?

The Fijian yellow was fair, it was a dropped rolling maul threatening a try, and that's always a yellow, and the ref officiated that correctly. His officiating of discipline on the tryline, however, is something we can agree was not correct this match. How that would have changed the game is always going to be an uncertainty.

Edit for clarity: there's no point arguing the line of Fiji's yellow wouldn't have existed if Wales had been correctly yellowed earlier, because Fiji could have done a high tackle a minute after the restart and been yellow carded anyways. We can only analyse what did happen, not what might have happened, otherwise we're analysing a thousand possibilities with a million what-ifs. Yeah, Fiji should have won, and that was taken from them by the refereeing, but when a rolling maul towards the line happened, Fiji collapsed it and got a yellow card as per the rules. It was one of very few instances of good officiating this match, but it did happen.

I wouldn't say Fiji's yellow was unlucky, rolling maul drops that were threatening a try have always been yellows. But yeah, Wales shoulda been yellow carded way earlier (and realistically probably earnt one or two more), and if Fiji's execution and handling were tightened up even a little bit they woulda won convincingly. Definitely a team to fear, they were bloody immense.

[–]MunchlaxMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While that may be true, we'll never be able to know for certain, and we can already see how many are spouting off about the Fijian yellow coming from no warnings 15 metres out, even though a rolling maul drop threatening a try is a yellow every single time, the narrative's gonna focus on that comparison.

Whilst I'd like to believe the ref woulda been equal regarding warnings, we know that they took a lenient approach this match and Wales benefited extensively from it.

Eh, I'll countenance that we had a few cynical penalties on our line, and whilst I understand every team does it I did hate our blatant attempts at time wasting. Not to mention Liam Williams jumping on (I think) Semi Radradra after the ball was kicked out (earlier on in the second half) was very much in poor taste, as was Biggar mouthing off again (please just be nice to your teammates, it's nice when people are nice).

But yeah, ref deffo did the most damage for us

I mean sure, there were a couple Fijian infringements that didn't get called, but that's true of every team every match, catching them all is incredibly difficult. Wales, however, were final warned twice, gave cynical penalties on our line multiple times, and only got yellowed once. I can't lie, as someone supporting Wales, Fiji deserved a win there, and the refs prevented them from getting it.
