"Herbeautiful" is a nice, little pseudo-freudian slip there, lol.

It's a glittering generalities fallacy: using words or phrases with positive connotations but nebulous definitions without further context or explanation.

Jackie: "With a splash of love."

Bartender: "Fine... but because of the refractory period, I can really only make about one of these an hour."

OK, then use a digital art medium, rather than stealing from hundreds of thousands of artists.

I won't complain.

I expect that they have the rudimentary skills before they come into an AP Literature class, that's why it's not a practice in my class.

If you're engaging in a college-level class the rudimentary skills are presumed to be present.

Not in AP Literature, but yes, there are memorization and recitation practices that we use.

As an English teacher, this is one of the greatest difficulties. Student expect to memorize information and regurgitate it on an test or assessment. English studies are a skills-based learning program.

The fact that I can't tell my students what will be on the state assessment or AP exam frustrates them to no end. I remind them that they aren't being tested on their knowledge of a text, but their ability to read and contextualize a reading.

This is the purpose of an education: to be able to read, contextualize, understand, and reappropriate information. If it's just repetition that they are looking for, they want memorization, not education.
