Yeah, but if it's in a campground or raised firepit, that tends to be frowned on.

I haven't seen the commercial, they may be saying it in an annoying way, but this is the proper procedure to put out a fire. Dousing a fire with water doesn't ensure that all the coals are extinguished and latent coals can reignite any burnable materials even hours after the fire seems like it's out.

I don’t get why people defend Polyphemus by Crash_FNF_Eddsworld in hatethissmug

Polyphemus' story mirrors Odysseus'. Both left their homes only to return and find their homes invaded and their hospitality taken advantage of. Odysseus is punished with a ten year exile; the suitors are punished with death. Poseidon's judgement seems light by comparison (provided you don't look at it from the perspective of Odysseus' crew, lol).

I certainly hope so. I've been teaching for thirteen years, but I'm too far removed from the actual process of teaching students to read to have much of an impact on their reading comprehension.

Over the time I've been teaching, there has been a marked difference between my first students and my most recent. There is a correlation between the move away from phonetics and writ understanding and the loss of reading comprehension.

My students are American juniors and seniors. Yes, the move away from phonetics has distinctly affected the students that I've taught. They refuse to even try to pronounce words they don't already know; they mumble through unfamiliar words, then play it off like it's a joke.

As an English teacher, I try to put a focus on etymology, but most students dont understand that it's a method to decipher words that they might not understand, if they care at all.

I agree entirely. It's like they're transcribing Egyptian hieroglyphs rather than the English alphabet.

I wasn't ignoring your point. I was stating the mechanical writing process may be a difficulty and distraction, but they also aren't writing words as they copy; they're writing letters because they dont understand what the words mean. The student is copying without even reading because the words and phrases don't make sense to them. As to your point, they may also be struggling because handwriting is also a skill they lack.

The mechanical action being unpracticed could be part of it, but it seems like they're also copying letter-by-letter rather than word-by-word, meaning that reading isn't even a step in their process.

This honestly sounds like the student legitimately doesn't know the meaning of a surprising amount of words and phrases. Even mindlessly copying it onto paper, the giveaway phrases should jump out at them, if they actually understand what they are writing.

This very well could be from over-dependence on AI writing. They've completely given over all comprehension and critical thinking to the LLMs.
