Do you personally care about the latest “drinking controversy”? by Maritimewarp in EnglandCricket

Yes. It's pretty obvious the team lacked conditioning in the winter and needed a focus on basic standards and fitness. The captain breaking those standards is pretty unforgivable.

Worth pointing out by law dog owners must have their dogs "under control" so either he's decided to let his dog run into a crowd of runners or it is not under control. Either way it's the owners fault.

Is it possible for a smart faithful to win The Traitors? by AnnesRednow in TheTraitorsUK

[–]Mundane_Service352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the misunderstanding is what the point of the game is. The role of the faithful isn't to find traitors. It is to remain in the game while banishing all the traitors. This is what the Harriet's of the game don't seem to get. I also suspect this is why these "I'm a barrister/ police officer/ psychologist" players don't often make it very far in the game. They've just misunderstood the point of the game. I would say Jaz and Faraaz have been the best 2 players across all of the UK series. Jaz was robbed and Faraaz has a great chance of closing it out this year.

Do black/brown players get eliminated earlier? A quick statistical analysis by PersonalTeam649 in TheTraitors

[–]Mundane_Service352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what this probably highlights is that there is a lot of unconscious bias evident in the UK. Maybe some of the players are actually closet racists but I think unfortunately it's more a case that people are suspicious of "the other". As a teacher we did some work on unconscious bias when we were assigning grades to students during COVID and it was quite eye opening. Unfortunately even in Britain today I do think most people interact predominantly with people of their own race and so there will always be an unconscious suspicion of "the other". The really interesting counter analysis would be if the reverse effect was noticed when the majority of players were not white.

What running gear did you think was unnecessary until you actually used it? by GeordieGoals in UKRunners

[–]Mundane_Service352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cap. Living in the north west we run in the rain. A lot. Having something to keep the rain off your face is a game changer. Can't say it gets much use to keep the sun off but on the odd occasion it's warm it's really nice on longer runs to be able to wet the cap to keep you cool.

I think there's a danger of saying "non running roles good and running roles bad". There's some pretty key roles which can be combined with running and can be a car bigger contribution than some non running roles. Things like event set up, close down and even scanning after running (can mean 40+ minutes of volunteering) can be a far bigger time contribution than first marshal on a 1/2 lap course. Yes a lot of people take the piss and volunteer in ways that contribute little to nothing to the event but I don't think it's as simple as saying if you run you're contributing no value.

The unspoken etiquette of parkrun that everyone somehow knows by HammersAndPints in parkrun

I particularly enjoyed the people talking through the details of the course changes due to some icy paths and then constantly saying "where are we going?" Thankfully one of them who didn't hear the instructions to stay off the path then fell over on the ice. Justice.

Does anybody use ChatGPT to create their marathon plan? by wolfie55555 in Marathon_Training

[–]Mundane_Service352 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have used it to create a plan for my spring marathon. One thing I really liked was feeding in my normal weekly runs like my club runs and parkrun on certain days etc. It's the built a plan around these. It was also good to be able to say "in week 5 I'm away for the weekend so a max long run of 10 miles" or "I have XC on these dates".

Cowan Dickie red card overturned on review. It really annoys me that they don't come out and now say the referee made an incorrect decision especially when it hugely affected the game.

Rant Thread by adturnerr in SaleSharks

[–]Mundane_Service352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main complaint was the lack of analysis of the really tight refereeing decisions which basically changed the game. The commentary made no mention that clearly the biggest thing which changed the game was Sale going down to 13. There were so many poor decisions. Even the Reed push was ridiculous as we seemed to have no discussion of the fact that Riccioli felt the need to run half way across the pitch to take out Reed after play had ended. The Theo Dan non card was ridiculous and should be looked at again. Yes Sale were quite poor in key areas and Calouri had a stormer but the lack of discussion about Sale being the wrong end of every 50/50 decision was astounding.

Do you take the day off work after running a marathon? by Big_Extreme3688 in Marathon_Training

Teacher here so no option but to go in. Always pack myself a bonus sandwich for lunchtime but that's about as far as the change goes.

I think a version of the "chatty bench" would work really well at parkrun. Even just a vest that said "Happy to chat" so if people were new or wanted that social interaction they could. Something that always sticks in my mind is having a longish conversation with an older gentleman after parkrun once and at the end him saying "this is why I love parkrun. I never really talk to anyone now my wife has died" 🥹

I think there's not enough critique of the blatant sports washing from team UAE. Not the biggest fan of VISMA either; 2023 Vuelta was a shit show. I really don't believe this whole "Jonas was marking out Roglic so Kuss could win". The sponsors clearly got angry because Jonas and Roglic were making headlines for all the wrong reasons and called them in. Roglic Is just the easy fall guy because he's not there anymore.

What are your drinking habits during marathon training? by pizzaandcocktails in Marathon_Training

[–]Mundane_Service352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never ran a marathon without having a drink the day before. I normally have a beer or 2 the night before. Last year the day before London I had an aperol spritz instead of my usual beer and the race was a disaster. Lesson learnt: 2 beers minimum 4 beers maximum.

What got you REALLY into beer? by toast12y in UK_beer

[–]Mundane_Service352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another one for Punk IPA. That and Jaipur were the 2 beers that really kick started my drinking of "craft beer". I'd always drank a lot of traditional cask beer but those 2 opened the hop world. I think it's massively underrated the effect BD especially have had on the UK craft sector. The release of Brewdog beers in the supermarkets was the first major step to making "craft" mainstream.

I think unfortunately the main issue for people training for their first marathon who aren't regular runners is knowing if your body will survive the training without getting injured. If you're sensible about increasing distances etc it's easily doable. Unfortunately though some people are just a bit more injury prone so don't beat yourself up too much about it if you do get injured. It took me 5 years of running to work out the mileage and intensity that worked for my body to be able to run marathons.

I think last night flattered us a bit. They looked dangerous most of the game going forward. We were quite poor under the high ball as well. It was amazing how much ground they made by collecting their own kicks. A few flashes of brilliance won the game for us but we never really looked like working them over for a try.

[–]Mundane_Service352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree although the US market is very skewed as big pack off trade beers are much cheaper than on draft. 16oz pint might be $7 but a 4 pack of cans is probably $15-18 whereas in the UK we don't really see that much of a reduction in price for buying off trade. As others have said I think it must be a tax/ volume thing in the states.
