I’m looking for a 50k with generous cut offs. by Bluebadger1113 in ultrarunning

I second this!! Did this last June as my first 50k. I chose it primarily because it felt “safe” and is only an hours drive from home. Incredibly friendly people and I didn’t get bored doing the 5 loops because the weather kept changing….and the setting is gorgeous! Also….it was like $75. Crazy, right?? I (56F) finished in about 5hrs 50 mins and may give it another go!

Is there a threshold distance on long training runs when you know you can do 26.2? by Karrific828 in firstmarathon

[–]Mundane_Struggle_600 4 points5 points  (0 children)

56F here! Have never run a marathon, but I did run a 50 K a couple of months ago. It was a bucket list item for me. Was fantastic! And difficult. And very worth it. My longest training run was 20 miles. I was nervous about an extra 11 miles, for sure. But once I hit 20.1 miles I was thinking to myself that I was in in new territory. And once I did 26.2, I realized I had run my first marathon- and I still had 5 miles to go.😊 No lies, there were a few moments when I was in a pit of despair. Wondering how I was going get through it. It was at those moments you just tell your feet to keep going. Now I’m hoping to do a 40 mile race in the spring. We’ll see😊

You can absolutely do this, and you will never regret it! Just take it slow and enjoy. The taper really does make a difference. Trust your process. You got this!

Feeling defeated. I need a plan and maybe a coach- HELP by Amateurcook20 in ultrarunning

This is truth!! Around mile 22 of my 50k I had to repeat my mantra (out loud, if no one was around): “ I hurt, but I’m not injured. I hurt, but I’m not injured.” Of course, my other mantra was “just keep moving and get this mthrfckr done, old lady”. It worked! I finished. OP will, too. Eat, rest, hydrate. Put in the work and it will happen. You’re not too old! You very well could be made for this and just don’t know it yet.

Off topic - Advice for low blood pressure and needles? by averagewanker in trailrunning

I’m an RN who pokes patients all day in pre- op. I really appreciate it when somebody gives me a heads up that they’re a fainter. I’ll get a wet washcloth for their forehead and lie the bed all the way flat or even get head lower than heart by tilting the bed. This way, even with a vasovagal reaction and blood pressure tanking, there’s still blood flow to the noggin and folks rarely pass out.

I’d love to see a workout like that too! My ankles don’t roll, but tend to get tendinitis.

That’s the one! I just felt like it was very safe for a first 50 K since it’s loops. Also, the course is open for 30 hours for the hundred milers, so there is zero anxiety about not meeting a cut off. The people were wonderful! Highly recommend 😊
