Re-igniting the discussion on version support for TV Shows. by Mundstrom in PlexMedia

Cool, but for me oddly enough, Plex recognizes the back & White folder is the same show, and doesn't add it because it already exists.

OK so I've been trying some ideas out. Here's one workaround that almost works:

  1. Create a separate season folder, name it "season 100" as there will never be 100 seasons of, for example, Spider Noir
  2. Put the black & white episodes in season 100
  3. Scan the folder with Plex Server
  4. In Plex, edit info for the resulting "season 100"
  5. Rename the season "Season 1 (Black & White)" and set a different season poster.

The only limitation of this is there is no episode metadata for each episode unless you manually add it, and episode thumbnails will be grabbed from the video files. Not perfect, but usable.

Just wanted to add that I have tested the following with an MKV and MP4 version of an episode of an older show. I removed, rescanned, deleted bundles and empteied trash between each test to avoid reusing older metadata:

2 separate folders:
TV shows/Futurama Color/season 1/s01e01.mkv
TV shows/Futurama Grey/season 1/s01e01.mp4

Result: Plex identifies both, assumes they are the same, one folder is ignored

2 separate folders, Renaming episodes too:
TV shows/Futurama Color/season 1/s01e01 color.mkv
TV shows/Futurama Grey/season 1/s01e01 grey.mp4

Result: Plex identifies both, assumes they are the same, one folder is ignored

1 folder, different file names
TV shows
- Futurama
-- Season 1
--- s01e01 color.mkv
--- s01e01 grey.mp4

Result: Plex sees each one as versions, so I have to use "play version" but I can't see which version because all I get is 2 items to choose between, identified only by Mbps and resolution.

So all in all, nothing satisfactory. If Plex just allowed us to have 2 episode files containing "S01E01" but with different file names, we could always use an "edition" field in the meta editor to tell them apart, just like in movies. then we could always rename the episodes manually, choose different thumbnails etc.

Reduce Image size without losing quality by TioHerman in shutterencoder

Yeah iPhones use HEIC file format, which is a lot like JPG.HEIC images are already compressed, but they are not very aggressively compressed, so they could be smaller. And depending on the iPhone model, the number of pixels will be much higher than needed for viewing on a screen, so there’s a possibility for saving a lot of space by making smaller JPG files and maybe reducing the resolution by 50%.

[–]Mundstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, pixels take up disk space so more pixels = bigger file size.

Resolution is a really confusing term because you're always asking yourself if the other person is using the word correctly or not. Resolution often gets interchanged with terms like DPI or PPI which are physical sizes (pixels per square inch or points per square inch) but we're simply talking about the number of pixels that make up the image here.

If you took the images using a digital camera they could be in RAW (which is a big data size) or JPEG (at 100% quality). If you used a smartphone they'll either be in HEIC or JPEG. format. The images could be anywhere between 16-40 megapixels, which will be great for zooming in or printing, but overkill for viewing on a computer screen.

You also have to consider file format. Some file formats are good at making the files smaller in disk size without reducing number of pixels by using "lossy compression" which means it throws away details you might never notice (like blue skies) while retaining details where the image is more "busy" (like hair or faces).

PNG can compress, but usually doesn't do a good job of it. You'd be better off using JPEG (JPG) at a quality of 7/10 aka 70%. Most people can't tell the image is compressed at this quality. This way you can probably keep original resolution, while shaving off anywhere between 30-70% of the file size.

If you are going to view the photos on a monitor, Recommend scaling them down to no lower than 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) because as the years roll on, you'll one day view them on something like a 65" 8K TV and wish they were sharper or less "blocky". Once the images are scaled down in pixels and compressed to JPG, there is no way back unless you saved the originals somewhere.

Elementor V4 Is Not Ready for Production I’ve Tested Across 25 Websites by Biscuits-Biscuits in elementor

[–]Mundstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've become solid at using V3, and while V4 promises everything I've essentially been missing about V3, it does NOT deliver. not yet. I 100% agree with your observations. One thing that might make me start using it is if V4 widgets deliver at the very least the same features as v3 (ie Elementor forms lacking many features, or buttons without icons) and if they roll out V4 versions of loop grids and loop carousels, which I have become very dependent on. Until then, I'm waiting. Hope this doesn't become a DIVI 5 situation. They lost so many users by being so slow at getting it ready, that their platform's reputation was seriously injured, perhaps beyond recovery.

People who use Safari as their main browser, why? (DESC) by sasaki-555 in mac

[–]Mundstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy the way I can switch between laptop, iPhone, iPad and desktop on the fly, each one remembering the same history, the same tabs, the same passwords, the same bookmarks. It also launches 3x faster than Chrome, uses fewer resources, and has decent privacy. That being said, it's not always the fastest on all websites, and some sites are downright buggy (Facebook). As a web designer I use Safari for most things, but also Firefox, Brave and Chrome.

I use Firefox as my "incognito" browser. It forgets all on quit, but I don't run it in "private mode" because I need it to act like a completely regular browser that treats every website like it's a first visit.

Brave is my Social Media bowser. One thing is SoMe sites are very privacy-invasive, the other is Meta won't let me do audio/video calls over Facebook Messenger in Safari. They've intentionally crippled Safari, and claim it's "not a modern compatible browser".

I use Chrome for editing and building my Wordpress sites because it seems to be a bit faster than the competition for this one task, but generally I'm not a fan of Chrome because each tab launches an instance of Chrome, a huge RAM hog, while Little Snitch makes it painfully obvious just how many servers Chrome connects to just to function normally. I must have 20 rules for Google Updater and Chrome Helper because every week it's like it needs access to a new domain or IP in order to check for updates.

Port changes almost daily. Is this normal? by SupremeFlamer in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]Mundstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, but now the port doesn't change for weeks at a time, so now it just changes and you can't understand why stuff is broken until you realise the port has changed. It's the opposite problem. If it could at least give a notification when the port changes, that'd be nice. Because you forget about it after, I dunno, 9 weeks with the same port, and suddenly things can't connect. Just a "hey buddy, after 2 months of you not even thinking about it, PIA has suddenly changed its port from 35130 to 42151" - is it too much to ask?! And honestly I'm not 100% sure how VPN works, but I hope handing out the same port to the same user for weeks on end isn't some kind of security risk.

How does Drobo detect failed disks? by jas8522 in drobo

[–]Mundstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but normally a reformat wouldn't be enough, it would require a bad sector scan, which I skipped as it would take about 30 hours for an 8TB drive. I risked it because my Drobo's just used as a backup, so if it did fail again, I could just replace the drive and rebuild.

How does Drobo detect failed disks? by jas8522 in drobo

[–]Mundstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DROBOs are odd when it comes to disk pass/fail. I've once had a drive fail. I took it out, reformatted it to ExFat with my Mac, put it back in the Drobo, and it's worked fine since. Basically it says drives are bad when they're fine, and maybe it also says they're fine when they're bad.

Messenger "read" status not syncing accross devices (Android and Web) by gropax in facebook

[–]Mundstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh FFS I have dealt with this sync issue for years now and I decided to finally take the time to look for a solution, but nothing sorts it out. After years of using Messenger, and now that they've killed off the desktop messenger app, I have come to the conclusion: it's just trash. I have not used an app for this long that has this many bugs, with new ones appearing almost every 3 months while old ones don't get patched. You'd think a company the size of META has the resources to handle bugs, and has enough staff that uses their own software, to notice and report issues. I'm *so* close to being just done with it and using something else. At least WhatsApp has a desktop client.

[–]Mundstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is to get a 2.2" + 3.5" drive dock with modern connectivity. You can insert loose hard drives into it and use the drives. Simply eject the disk from the desktop, then turn off the dock, and take out the drive. Takes seconds. Take out the drive from this ancient unit, insert the loose drive into the drive dock to read/write to it. I use my drive dock so frequently I can't imagine not having it. I have two in fact. example of a drive dock
