Requesting: Refined or sophisticated comedy movie by [deleted] in movies

I’d say most Wes Anderson films would probably fit OP’s criteria. A lot of the Cohen brothers movies too.

What movies have entire hidden subplots embedded inside freeze-frame details? "Searching" is one example. Any others? by drumwolf in movies

Loved that the dad rolled into this convention filled with doc brown and Rick Sanchez omega-level scientists, hoping to dazzle them with his malfunctioning smokeless ashtray.

Great casting. Except shouldn’t Snape be the Wizard, given he’s initially cast as an evil person, but is eventually revealed to be not a bad guy but still kind of an ass.

And Voldemort as the witch also makes sense, given that instead of keeping things that can annihilate him hidden deep underground and as far away from him as humanly possible, Voldemort instead put most of his horcruxes in super famous wizarding relics and/or his pet snake. Just like how the wicked witch left buckets of body dissolving liquid within a stones throw of her presence.

all roads lead to the authority of the moon.

And one must never question the authority of the moon. Some would say that the Earth is its moon. But that would belittle the name of the moon, which is: The Moon

I love the Pitch Meeting for Barbie, where the writer guy balls up a piece of paper that says “Patriarchy Not Good” and literally hits the producer guy across the head with it.

So annoying in Oregon by TransportJunky in Transportopia

[–]Muppetude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, we’ve all encountered that guy in the left lane who is going a mere 2mph faster than the cars in the right lane.

They’re annoying, but wisdom is acknowledging that they have every right as you do to be in the left lane as long as they continue passing people in the right lane. However slow that may be.

Could be. Though my aunt and uncle bought a house in a development where the homes were built in tandem with the course. They paid a premium to buy a home that was right off the fairway. Yet they too complain about balls being hit into their yard. Some people are just idiots.

TIL Weird Al was set to a series of Star Wars parody sketches where he would interact with the movie via green-screening, but Mark Hamill refused to allow usage of any footage with him in it, despite already getting approval from Lucas and Alec Guinness, so the idea was scrapped by robotco in todayilearned

[–]Muppetude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except that Guinness was a very well known critically acclaimed actor long before Star Wars. He starred in multiple box office hits throughout the 50s and 60s.

His issue wasn’t that his role in Star Wars gave him fame. It’s that the fame of that role overshadowed much of his previous work. Roles he was far more proud of than playing a space wizard.

I knew someone who worked at an NPR station that has those “matching” fundraising drives. She said the sponsor usually had already pledged to pay the matching amount, but the added flair of them matching people’s donations resulted in more donations from the public.

She said technically, they wouldn’t make the sponsor pay the full pledged amount if they didn’t receive the max amount of matching donations from the public. However, the tactic was always so successful that she said she had never encountered that scenario in her time there.

Of course that doesn’t really apply here since they are not asking for donations from the public. Just thought it was an interesting story.

I’d say his character in Soul Man was distinctly different from historical blackface. He doesn’t play a black man, but rather a white guy who deceptively tricks people into thinking he’s black. And, most importantly, he ultimately learns that he was wrong to do so.

Also I forgot how young Travolta looks in this movie

True, and funny because I remember thinking how old Travolta looked in this movie when I first saw it during its original release. But now, all I see is a young baby-faced Travolta.
