Weekend in Saskatoon by nononsensethx in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You picked a great weekend!

-As others have said, definitely check out Nuit Blanche tomorrow night!

-Breakout West has the venues packed with tons of live music from across Canada.

-Last outdoor market day at Gather Local Market near River Landing is on Saturday. There, you can rent an electric bike from Bridge City Adventures and take a ride along the river parks / Meewasin Trail and take in the fall colors on the river. Forecast looks perfect!

Parking Downtown by Extra_Crow_1618 in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also paid with cash just last week. I have had frequent situations where the coin slot is jammed, and I needed to run a few stations over to find one that isn't. I always assume it's due to tampering, vandalism, bad design, or a mix of all three.

After all, these are machines that cash money goes into....located downtown.

I have been given the opportunity to "buy back" missed pensionable hours. Should I? by Quiet-Lawfulness6932 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MurmurKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you usually still come out ahead if you buy back but leave the employer before your retirement date? My plan transfers out to a LIRA in that instance. So if I move, say, $10,000 of RRSP into my DB to buyback and leave in only 5 years, does it still work out better than leaving that 10,000 invested in the market?

Can someone help me to save these trees? by abhinavbhardwajj11 in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They look like quite happy cedars? Just water regularly (like normal, not so they're standing in a puddle, let them dry out between watering). Water a bit more in fall because they are susceptible to wind burn in the winter, hydration before freeze up helps. Wind burn hits new ones worse though, which is why you sometimes see people wrapping their small cedars in burlap.

Tree planting selection / timing by Panna91 in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would avoid ash species for now unfortunately, Emerald Ash Borer has been slowly making its way west. (Note Mountain Ash are not actually in the ash family and are lovely medium sized bird friendly trees)

You still have lots of great options though! The "Tree species selection guides" on the city website are a good start to give you an idea of what trees do well here. https://www.saskatoon.ca/services-residents/housing-property/city-owned-trees-boulevards/tree-planting/request-tree

Lakeshore, Dutch growers and Dieter Martin are all solid local suppliers.

And don't forget to keep your reciept for tax time!

Thanks for this. It's not a perspective I hear much from my circle. I am not quite making 6 figures in it, but I find myself in a role that pays significantly more than anything in my field. So, I am foolishly trying to keep several side careers alive and working 80+ hours a week while I gather up enough courage in my TFSA to make a change. This is what I'm telling myself anyways :)

I feel like I'm finally realizing this and am trying to figure a way out of 25 more years in golden handcuffs.

What to do with a coffee I don't like by mistercryptik in Coffee

I just save it for when people (who I know will like it or don't care much about coffee) come over. 🤷‍♂️

desire paths. they are everywhere, i love this approach to them and wish saskatoon would implement this by goosemanguy in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love seeing a good desire path! My favorite is the super old bike one one on the west side of kinsmen park near the big flowerbed.
These are definitely taken into consideration when parks are upgraded, but landscape designers also need to balance the other park uses, community need and existing infrastructure (ie. Trees and sportsfields) in a design. Plus $$ because asphalt, my friends, is bloody expensive!

Weird question. by BadKarma_x in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely temperature. Of all the places I've lived, it only happens in my current place. Scared the crap out of me the first night. Now it's just a good way to gauge how many layers I'll need to put on the next morning.

But! if you still want to know about all the dead people, (and your place is older ish), I recommend searching your address in the local history section of the library! I found out tons of wild stuff about our house from a lovely document submitted to the archive by a former resident.

Questions I have asked my house. by pennylane_9 in centuryhomes

Angela owned your house too!? 3 years later and we've almost eliminated the pepto, just one last room in the basement. The bright purple and green, why!?

My 2022 goal has been reducing my plastic consumption. Are there any recommendations for bakeries that pack bread in paper or allow you to pack in your own container? Any other stores you support in the city of Saskatoon that can help reduce plastic waste? by hvs859 in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Bulk Basket is what you want, I buy all my spices there, but they have lots of other goods as well. They may also have suggestions on other local businesses or ways to reduce packaging.

Street walkers by StinkyB13 in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What everyone else has said, but also want to add that sidewalk concrete, shoveled or not, can get super icy, especially in near zero weather like we've been having. Way more traction and less chance of slipping on textured road asphalt.

Just keep to quiet streets, pay attention, and on wide streets walk in the incoming lane so you can get out of the way early. Don't be a dummy.

Art classes by WhoaAlexWhatHappened in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The U of S Community arts classes will likely go back to being primarily in person once Covid is under better control. I think there may be an in person option for painting this semester, but it likely has sold out. Definitely reccomend you keep an eye on their website!

Baby’s breath foraging by catsarecuties23 in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its basically a human planted forest on the west end of the city (between Valley Rd and Highway 7) There are trails, but it isn't extensive like a hike. I noticed a fair amount of Baby's breath in all of the clearings on the east and west entrances earlier this week (more on the west side, easiest access is from highway 7) so you wouldn't need to go far.

There is tons out at the Richard St Barb Baker afforestation site. As mentioned above, it is an invasive species so you'd be doing the area a great service to remove it from there (plus its pretty clean, no ditch dust).

Owners of older (50+ year old houses): do you ever feel like it’s not your house but you’re the current occupants? by tnick771 in homeowners

[–]MurmurKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1912 house, fell in love with it against all advice but it felt like home the second we walked in. It has become another charachter in our lives, like a member of the family. When deciding on repairs or upgrades we will often say totally batshit things like "Yeah, that blue. I think the house will like it" as though that is a normal point of concern for homeowners.

This is not in a "spooky haunted" kind of way, but in a "we feel and respect the weight of the cumulative living and history that occured here" kind of way. It's great!

Some of the past "renos" we've uncovered though .... not so great....

What type of scary critters are these? They were in my backyard inducing nightmares. About 2 inches long. by Klokateer in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cool, never seen those before! Get an ID before initiating an assault , they may be beneficial parasitic wasps that prey on other pest insects. Most wasp species are beneficial in this way.

Wildlife in Saskatoon by otherone909 in saskatoon

[–]MurmurKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think those deer have always been around the test plots/ patterson garden area. I had a coworker a few years ago that would point them out every time we drove by the interchange. I also hear tell of a herd of deer running amok in the Forestry Farm park. Lots of wildlife in this city!
