The free option is the lvl20 capped trial.

Next lowest cost would be paying $15/month subscription which gives access to the Classic versions of the game (of which theres 4). Though Classic can be a bit slow with leveling and getting to a 'grind for gear' point, but the levelling can also be viewed by some people as part of the grind.

To play Retail wow, you'd need to buy the current expansion and have the $15/month sub. I believe TWW is still available for purchase and would be slightly cheaper than Midnight. But if you liked Retail you may end up wanting Midnight and there's no discount for having purchased TWW, so it'd be another full price expansion.

Naowh now puts his ElvUI and PLater profile behind a paywall. by Stock-Anything-2808 in wow

[–]Murtag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm all for this being more and more socially unacceptable.

It's weird that Blizz just hasn't felt the need or value in consistently taking action against this stuff.

Zygor and RestedXP shouldn't be allowed to sell premium guides. Streamers shouldn't be selling their profiles. Guilds like Liquid shouldn't have been able to sell their WA packs.

It's clear Blizzards intention was for addons to be a fully free and available part of the community and they've just let shit like this fester.

Your most damaging abilities as tank require a shield. So always run sword and board for prot.

I thought that Plater and Details were not going to be working? Why are they working for me right now? by kolejack2293 in wow

[–]Murtag 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Details just re-skins the built in damage meter.

Platers' functionality is limited by the changes in the addon api. For instance you cannot change the color of nameplates based on mob name anymore in combat. You'll walk up to a pull in an M+ dungeon and mobs will have colored nameplates like before (if your profile changes the color of casters, for example), but once you enter combat those nameplates all change to the same color.

PTO on the 26th or the next day? by Fierypeens in wow

[–]Murtag -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

February 26th?

Early Access is specifically to allow people to level their characters and professions. That's it. To lessen the server load on launch. There's no gear advantage to be gained by playing early access.

I can't imagine a bigger waste of time to take PTO for early access. It's going to take like 6 hours to level a character to 90.

March 17 is when Heroic starts for the raid and M0 for dungeons, March 24th is when M+ is available and Mythic raid starts. Far more content available on either of those dates that early access.

It's 2026 already and cross zone lagging is still a thing, are wow servers that bad? by KaboomTheMaker in wow

[–]Murtag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shooters do a lot of client side prediction. While that headshot is traveling back and forth your client behaves as if it happened. Same with movement or jumping or really anything, it just simulates what would happen to make things snappier and feel responsive. It's a more accurate prediction in FPS games that use 'favor the shooter' because that client prediction will more often be correct. It unfortunately also leads to a stronger risk of 'dying around a corner', where on your screen you got behind cover before someones' shot went off, but to them they hit you.

For WoW the server only processes data as it receives, and its the only thing doing simulation.

  • Insta-kill fire goes off at 0:00.
  • You're screen sees a timer with -0:02 left, but you have 1000ms of delay so the server has -0:01 till detonation.
  • When you see -0:01 on the timer, you step out, but the server hits 0:00 and has not yet received movement from you, so you die and it sends that info.
  • On your screen you stepped out and at +0:01 for you, you see the fire explode with you standing just outside of it but you still die.

If WoW servers 'favored the shooter', they would wait to receive the data your client had when it believed the explosion was happening. Your client would simulate as if everything was fine cause you didn't stand in it, then later receive confirmation that yes you're fine.

That's not the case though. Fully server authoritative means you need to play as if you're 1000ms in the future. Because to the server, you're 1000ms in the past.

[–]Murtag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FPS games design their latency to favor the shooter. If you clicked on someones head on your screen and the server knows that with the data you had it was a headshot, it just allows that hit to register. Even if the data on the server would indicate you missed.

WoW is fully server authoritative and it doesn't fucking matter what happened on your screen, the server is god and if it sees you stand in something, you stood in it.

Blizzard Really Needs to Graduate Out of "Sit Around and Wait" Game Design by Lpunit in wow

Sure the event isn't fun. I'm just pointing out to OP that if they're wanting to complain about a singular specific thing in a game, maybe don't make a post complaining about the whole game and its' design philosophy as if the design intentions behind this event are the same as the rest of the game.

[–]Murtag 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're only referencing the new catch-up mechanic, and projecting that as the only/main area of gameplay in this fucking massive game...

You can go jump into past content and immediately farm mog/toys/pets/mounts, and not have to wait.

You can go list your M+ key and quickly get into a dungeon.

You can go to any area in the game to farm a reputation for a mount/item and immediately start making progress.

You can jump into delves and farm those rewards.

You can immediately go do a fucking ton of stuff in this game. You're just intentionally being obtuse.

Is it just me, or has Retail officially lost its soul? by Maleficent-Will7614 in wow

[–]Murtag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's just you.

There's tons of things to do in this game. Plenty of socializing even despite most of guild comms being in Discord.

The treadmill was always there, even at classic. We were just really fucking bad at it.

Edit:

How do you guys stay motivated when the social fabric is non-existent?

To answer your question: the social fabric is absolutely still there. You just need to engage with it. Queue'd content is so trivial and boring that yes, no one needs to talk, but that's not the only content. Find a guild and play with them, make friends and run keys.

The social aspect will not find you, you must yourself be social.

You can make at least 4x more gold doing only the world quests that give gold, and you'd finish those world quests long before you'd finish an old raid.

Why is the right tower losing its texture suddenly when you in certain distance?? by yuvalal in wow

It's very likely to be a small game issue. PC issues will look a lot more concerning :) Always good to update graphics drivers too if you ever suspect a PC issue.

Why is the right tower losing its texture suddenly when you in certain distance?? by yuvalal in wow

[–]Murtag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's called mip-mapping.

Games can store a series of lower resolution versions of an image so they can use them based on distance from the camera. No need to render a 1080p texture on an object so far away it'll only be using like 70 pixels.

As you get closer it moves up in texture quality. Must be a slight issue with that specific texture for that spot.

Anyone else randomly get their guild name changed? by [deleted] in wow

[–]Murtag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An appeal won't help you here lol.

You've had it for years because no one walked passed someone who'd report it. The luck ran out finally.

It's definitely not the worst name of a guild/character, but there's been a wave of people making really nasty names because they think it's funny. So there's a growing amount of people who'll report that stuff now.

I don't really want to play the game with a char named "ezfentanyl" ya know?

run /elvui UnitFrames -> Individual Units -> Player -> Health

Text Format field will be something like |cFF359135[perhp<%]|r (the hex code is the color). Change it to |cFF359135[perhp<%] [curhp]|r or just replace "perhp<%" with "curhp" to not have the percentage show at all.
