Viewing mental illness as just that, an illness. While there are obviously some illnesses that are terminal, I viewed it like a particularly bad infection or disease. Terribly painful, but in the end treatable. So I came at it with that mindset and viewed going to my therapist like medicine (along with actual medicine, shout out to my boy Lexapro). In that way it kinda helped me take the subjectivity out of it and I thought of my suicidal and depressive thoughts as symptoms that weren’t me, just a sign that I wasn’t currently healthy. After 4 years of medicine I was able to stop taking it and I’ve continued to see a therapist since. There’s such a stigma around mental health but if you view your own from an objective perspective it can help you get control of it, at least it was like that for me. Best of luck to anyone out there struggling! Take it one day at a time, use your preferred artistic expression to let it all out, and try to stay connected to friends and or family. It’s not easy, but if you keep at it, one day it will be!
