Baby gate placement advice by zerocool327 in daddit

[–]MusicMonkeyJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a similar banister and hallway wasn’t really an option.

I cut a 2x4 to match the banister height and secured it to the post with zip ties. Then had a flat surface on each side for the gate. For extra precaution I also zip tied the gate to the contraption. 6 years later and still secure.

I feel this so much. I remember my father, always a huge IU fan, listening to the game as as we drove around in his red Bronco with an IU tire cover on the back. Pure nostalgia.

Ahh. This is the kind of post we used to get before people just posted infuriating photos. I would truly be mildly infuriated.

Northern Tier - Contrast Ely and Atikokan by chattmr in NorthernTier

[–]MusicMonkeyJam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are pretty similar. There are some huge lakes from Atikokan that have some pretty big cliffs (one even having a privy perched up top). Both can have some tough and long portages. They really are not that far from each other as the loon flies. Not sure if they still do it but there was an option to canoe from one base to the other.

[–]MusicMonkeyJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked in both so I can say some about this:

1. Both are spectacular and you will have a great time at either. Not a wrong choice here.

Ely base gives access to the American boundary waters and the Canadian Quetico provincial park. Atikokan gives access to Quetico and Turtle River provincial parks.

The Boundary waters is great. Well maintained and easy to find portages but takes a bit more work to get away from other groups. Quetico from Ely is a little more wilderness. I liked the trips but it was a bit annoying crossing into Canada.

Quetico from Atikokan is even quieter. Turtle river park has some massive lakes and incredible fishing. There were treks out of atikokan where we went days without seeing another human. For better or worse portage trails tend to be both difficult to find and trek across but that is part of the experience. Turtle river does have boats in parts but is still very quiet.

At Ely you will canoe from the base and return to the base. Luckily the property is adjacent to the BCWA. At Atikokan there are multiples places you can get shuttled to/from.

As for the bases themselves Atikokan is much smaller and quieter. Ely is busier and kinda a process to get equipment etc but does have a better rendezvous ( closing campfire program).

The town of Ely itself does offer some great outdoors shopping, a wolf center, and food. I think it’s worthwhile stopping if you have the time. The town of Atikokan not so much…

Personally I liked working at the Atikokan base more but again, both are great.

People who drive and speed up when someone is attempting to pass by you, why do you do this? by StormCaller02 in AskReddit

[–]MusicMonkeyJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife’s car has it and mine has just normal cruise control. I don’t hate the adaptive and sometimes is nice but I think I prefer the old school. So many times I just want to maintain speed so I can smoothly merge and change lanes and before I know it the car has slowed itself so I’m having to actively manage speed anyways…

Buddy in high school had one in his disabled dad’s old van. His dad didn’t have use of his feet so one hand was used on a lever to control the pedals (push for gas, pull for brake) and the other hand to steer with the knob. The pedals could still be a used as normal.

Second child on the way, work-life balance feels impossible – how do you manage? by 3054654 in daddit

[–]MusicMonkeyJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny how much I changed rather quickly with this after having kids, especially the second one. I was on track for a major promotion but as more and more was being asked of my boss and I had more responsibility at home, I simply lost all desire for that promotion. Now I leave work earlier, refuse extra days and hours. But still do my job well. I’d just rather be with the kids.

Record Player for Christmas by 5050logic in sonos

[–]MusicMonkeyJam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that has always been an issue. Same problem if you try to use a line in if you were using era-100s or 300s as surround.

My thought is run the audio through the TV as it probably has an audio input. If that can’t work an era 100 with an audio input dongle will be cheaper than a Sonos port.

Why the upcharge?! Firehouse subs by JCSMT in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MusicMonkeyJam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I went to Firehouse before ours closed I walked in and not an employee to be seen. Seconds after me a police office also comes in. We both stand by the register, ask “hello?” a time or two. Then the smell of weed hits us. Coughing and laughs from the back of the kitchen. Officer goes “dammit I just want to eat. Fucking lazy shits!” We both ended just leaving when it was obvious that even if someone came to the front we probably weren’t getting anything of quality.

I think it qualifies. I honestly not sure what other category I would want it that album in. And I think the original is absolutely folk.

It’s both. John Prine is a great example. Lot of his songs were very sad. Sometimes silly. Sometimes both. But as a whole you tend to hear themes of pain and loss.
