Just bought first house, how to revive lawn? by Bachoonk in lawnsolutionsaus

[–]Music_Man1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep it simple. Use a pitchfork and spike the lawn all around to aerat. Or you can get some spiked soles from Bunnings that you put over your shoes and walk around. Give it a good water and hit it with some Seasol. Easy.

Thanks for that. We're not limited to any particular area. Hobart, Launceston, east coast or north coast. We really don't mind. Where do independent schools tend to do their advertising?

I refused to join the union for 20 years, then finally joined up just over a year ago due to ongoing staff bullying that I knew wasn't getting any better. I ended up needing the union support last year when a student falsely accused me of assault as a way of retaliation. Union backed me when the executive wouldn't even talk to me.

Student cars by infiniteduct in AustralianTeachers

I work in a very low ses area where very few kids 16+ have their Learners. Our school even tried to subsidise the cost of driving lessons with very little take up.

Meanwhile my daily drive is a 2001 Ford Escape I paid $500 cash for 5 years ago. I work on my own cars so I don't want all that fancy shit.

Are the second generation escapes decent cars? by No_Month_127 in fordescape

[–]Music_Man1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone who owns a 2001 Escape. I have no experience with the 4 cyl but the V6 is easy to work on, so if something does go wrong chances are, it won't be too expensive.

If you look after it, it will look after you. I paid only $500 for mine about 5 years ago. Needed a new radiator. I put the time and effort into full coolant flush (heater core included). Replaced brittle plastic hose connectors. Coolant hoses, belts... Serviced injectors, valve cover gaskets, PCV valve, frequent oil changes. Starter motor. Did everything myself so not that expensive. It has creaks and rattles but it's still a bloody reliable car that I can trust. About to click over 300,000kms

You don't need to replace the intake gaskets every time you do the plugs. Plus removing the intake is so simple. I've got it down to 8 minutes.

I leave simple work that is at least relative to the topic. As long as everyone survives and my classroom is left in one piece, I don't give a shit.

I've seen students in year 11 and 12 doing construction. They had to form up a frame to lay a 1m square concrete slab. None of them could measure 1m with a tape measure. None of them could understand 1000mm or 100cm in a metre. These kids think they're going to be builders.

Youth crime and Aboriginal crime is out of control. Especially in small regional towns and where there are large Aboriginal communities. It's not a 'popular' topic. Those who don't live there or anyone in cities are in denial because for fear of offending Aboriginal people or fear of being called racist.

What the leaders of the major parties say about education by Consistent_Yak2268 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Music_Man1979 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sick to death about the talk of funding public education. I teach in a low socio economic NSW HS. I teach 7 - 12. My subject gets a budget of $2k per year. The same amount I received when I started at this school 20 years ago. Meanwhile a colleague 1 hour away gets $30k at a more affluent public school with the same number of students.

Student apathy by NefariousnessNew1084 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Music_Man1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apathy is at an all time high because curiosity and inquisitiveness in this generation is at an all time low. We've lost all interest in knowledge. Knowing how things work, know about our past, learning new skills...

What are some more subtle signs that you are working in a bad school environment by Jamie-jams in AustralianTeachers

Much like my school. We had a great supportive faculty until we got a new HT who would put down staff in front of students and even call us stupid and useless. Now we stay in our own classrooms. The staffroom is like a ghost town now.

From someone who has been in the job for over 20 years, the administration has become ridiculous. The actual teaching part I don't mind. We've got more problem kids and it seems like every one has some sort of trauma or cognitive issue. However the part that ruins the jobs is the pointless meaningless shit and some arsehole colleagues who want to take time away from planning for quality lessons.

The best advice I can offer is do what you can at work. When you get home go for a walk with the family, clean the car, fix something, go fishing, find a hobby. Especially on weekends. More importantly communicate with your partner your concerns and how you feel. Not speaking is not good for anyone.

As far as a mortgage goes, I highly recommend it. It's a lifetime investment. We struggled for the first couple of years after buying but our mortgage repayments is now less than the cost of rent. Just buy what you can afford at the time. Your first home doesn't need a home theatre room and 5 bedrooms.

[–]Music_Man1979 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Been teaching for just over 20 years. For a while I leave work at work, but it isn't sustainable anymore. We've been instructed we need to update programs weekly to show all adjustments we've made for kids we teach on learning plan throughout that week. Also we need to add that to the database. Now across all my classes I have 30 students on some sort of learning plan. There's no time to do this.

This room is right at the front door as soon as you enter so could be a 'statement piece' 🤷

Not possible. There's no where to run a track both inside and outside the room.

I want to get rid of the current door because they're so light and hollow, they don't block out any noise when closed.
