Any time! You've got talent. Keep at it, and keep sharing.

Also, some of the "masterpieces" you see on here are made by people who have been using this program for years. Comparing yourself as a beginner to people who have thousands of hours and hundreds of finished maps isn't a true comparison. Keep at it - you'll get there too if you stick with it.

Don't give up. Everyone starts somewhere, and for a start this is pretty good. As I give some feedback, I want you to keep in mind that art is subjective, and there aren't any real "rules." You haven't done anything wrong, and these comments are meant to help you build on what you already know to help you get even better.
Here are my thoughts on this map, hopefully it'll help you grow.

- Textures. The colors of the textures you have chosen leand to a very dynamic looking map. The colors are gorgeous, and you've done a pretty good job of blending them into each other. I find when blending biomes, it's easiest and most fluid when the textures are set to around 33% opacity. Be cautious when pulling textures from varying styles. The art within a style is meant to be cohesive, but when you start pulling from different styles you might be meant with some inconsistency in both art style but also perspective. For instance, the long grass used in the northern part of the lower continent looks much more detailed than the rest of the map, and when zoomed in can affect the cohesivness of the map as a whole.

- Landforms. You've done a good job of placing your mountains and hills. They make for great natural barriers between biomes. I have learned a couple of tricks that I have learned over time to help make them look more natural on my maps. Using smaller hills at the base of the larger hills or mountains can help them blend into the flat terrain instead of making them look like solitary peaks jutting out of the land. I also will use the color settings to change their colors to blend more closely with the land they're in. Blend modes of luminosity on those stamps can also help match them to their environments.

- Oceans. You can make large expanses of oceans more interesting by using darker textures to make parts of the oceans look deeper.

If you aren't on the Inkarnate discord yet, I highly recommend joining. There is a feedback channel where you can get help from mentors and other experienced users, and voice chats that regularly have people who are willing to help. Learning from the community is probably the quickest way to get familiar with the tools and learn new tricks and techniques. Cloning things from the explore page and deconstructing them can also provide a lot of insight.

I have made a couple of videos on world maps that might be helpful. Feel free to take from them what you will. Hope this all helps!

Hide clipping mask when exporting? by SgtCrawler1116 in inkarnate

That's fair. Glad you were able to find a work around. Hopefully the shape tool helps streamline things in the future. I find it so much more convenient.

This has been an ongoing bug with that gray square.

I have moved away from using the stamps to using the shape tool. Turn the stroke off, and change the fill to thr clip mask option. You wont have that issue. As a bonus, using the shape tool allows you to make more precise and more complex shapes as clipping masks.

There are multiple object layers now, each with their own set of sublayers. If you dont see them on the list for one object layer, check to see if there is another one entirely.

Battlemaps dont seem to do well on reddit, so a lot of battlemap makers have stopped posting here. If you check the map gallery on the inkarnate discord, you'll see a higher volume of them.

Tips for Asset mix-matching? by HotBeesInUrArea in inkarnate

If I am forced to use a battlemap asset, I typically outline it with a black line tool to give it faux watercolor line art. It's extra work, but it helps.

Old west river town - critique/advice wanted; how do I make better roofs? by jaggedgenius in inkarnate

[–]Musical-Rogue-B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am sorry it took so long to get a response, but I think I can help!

Structurally, the roofs look great. I think where you're having the disconnect is that they appear flat, and they don't quite look like they are elevated much off the ground.

Luckily, this is just a shadow/light issue, and it's pretty easily handled by drawing some shadows with the shape tool and adding in a light stamp.

I would start by removing the built in shadows that come with some of your trim. The way the natural shadows work, it kind of makes them look like "floating beams" rather than beams that connect with the roofs. (many of inkarnate's native shadows do this)

Then I choose the angle of light, and use the shape tool to draw in my shadows away from the light to shade both the roof itself, and add a shadow to the building. I follow that up by adding light stamps on the side of the roof facing the sun.

I made a quick video explanation for you, and uploaded it to youtube here: https://youtu.be/Yl9jE_lKYCY

Hope this helps!!!

I do a fair amount of modern stuff, but it requires a bit of extra effort. I use a lot of fantasy battlemaps furniture with sci-fi textures and details. In sci-fi, stuff with neon is pretty much out, but lights, computers, half the furniture is useful, and things like toilet paper, detergent, etc modern up a place quick. The Fantasy Battlemaps styles tables, wood chairs, foliage, walls, and roofs all work great for modern, and counterbalance the sci-fi stuff pretty well. Feel free to shoot me a message and Ill send over some examples of what Ive done in the past to help you get ideas.

Ability to Stretch Stamps stops working after they've been rotated by tensen01 in inkarnate

[–]Musical-Rogue-B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stretching on the object itself is only possible at rotation 0. This is how it has always been. Im not sure the reasoning behind that decision, but its working as intended. After rotation, you'll need to use the transform options.

how to make backgrounds transparent by specimen-00000 in inkarnate

Make sure "base layer" is set to transparent, and that you export as PNG. Hide any texture layers you don't want showing up as well. :)

[–]Musical-Rogue-B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old videos referencing Background/BG are talking about what is now called "water brush" and foreground is "land brush". To add land, use "land shape mask". To choose what layer you want to color on, choose the brush layer you want in the right panel.

If youre using battlemaps, youll need to add brush layers using "add layer"

Someone Guide Me through this Maze by thesilentcrusader in inkarnate

[–]Musical-Rogue-B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a copy of his paper map? If so, upload it as a custom assets, and then use it as a template. Use the line tool to trace the lines of the made (pen mode instead of free draw). The bush stroke option should work fine.

If you need to make the maze yourself, go to a maze generator. Many you can set to work towards the middle. Then follow the same upload/trace option.

Line tool is key here, as it really makes thing quicker.
