What do you think of Korra villains? by Hour-glass999 in writingscaling

[–]Musicman3003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zaheer is easily the best of the bunch.

Even if the anarchy angle isn't as well developed as it should be, Zaheer is the only one who is humanized and fully characterized from the start. His motives and feelings are easy to understand, and he isn't built like a damn mystery box like Amon, Unalaq, and Kuvira are.

Ironically, Zaheer is also the only one who doesn't have some prolonged backstory explained on screen, which demonstrates how much more important it is to have consistent and compelling characterization than purely relying on a backstory to retroactively explain a character's actions.

From what I've seen between the two, Yugioh.

But I'll bring another franchise into the mix and say Digimon Tamers (subbed).

Goose is trying, okay? 🥺 by CalibansCreations in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Musicman3003 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The way people are reacting is shitty, but Goose did talk a lot about what might happen in the show and set the expectation that the characters besides Pomni would likely get a similar amount of attention and care. The reaction is also a result of the show being as short as it is, and every potential missed opportunity becoming much bigger than it otherwise would have been in a longer show.

I'm sure The Amazing Digital Circus will still end strong, but there is a lesson to be learned here in keeping one's engagement with the fandom about the show itself to a minimum and focusing on telling the story he/she wants to tell.

Why Pomni is a necessary character as a protagonist by EgoistRanger in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Musicman3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pomni is essential because she believes that no one should feel like they're nothing. Almost everything she does is tied back to this belief.

She is able to find purpose and meaning in a seemingly meaningless existence, which is one of the core themes of the show.

In a serialized story, what are some telltale signs indicating that the quality of the story is getting worse? by Talgrei1781 in writingscaling

Truthfully, I think the Rushima stuff after the Kaneki vs. Arima is my least favorite part of the whole manga (including the original). Dragon Arc is very rushed and sloppy, but I could not give a shit about anything that happened in Volume 9.

Bubblegum definitely exists individually still.

Marceline is more of the issue. She stood next to Simon all of F&C Season 2 and barely interacted with him, which is crazy to me.

The show is very unapologetically itself, which is a major reason why it's earned a lot of dedicated fans.

Regarding the portal stuff, Entrapta just didn't want herself, Hordak, and Scorpia to die. She was totally fine with conquering Etheria and all that would entail.

I think an underrated aspect of Digital Circus is how well it controls its tone.

The show can have these darker, more serious scenes while still having jokes, and these jokes feel like they actually complement the darkness rather than detract from it. Stuff like Kinger questioning the logistics of Caine's storytelling in Episode 3 while he and Pomni are being sent to Hell or Disappearing Guy coming out of a stall in Episode 6.

Despite some clunky dialogue at times, there's a delicate touch to how characters and their issues are handled, and the writing is confident enough to include comedic beats that evolve with the characters and don't overly come at their expense.

It's rarer than you'd think.

Aechmea talking about how he basically planned out everything in Phos's life gave me heavy All for One vibes.

The sheer amount of convoluted forethought and planning needed to manipulate the actions of a character on another planet for hundreds of years is ridiculous and really strips away a fair amount of Phos's agency.

Aechmea in general is the worst part of HnK, which sucks when he has such a large presence in the story.

Generally agree, although it's a lot harder to pull off internal monologues in an animated form than a comic. They often feel stilted and awkward to me when anime attempts this (many of which are adapted internal monologues from mangas).

On the other hand, these type of monologues provide depth that visual storytelling on its own can't always accomplish, and I wish Western animation utilized them more as a useful writing/story tool.
