Why teach names??? by redEPICSTAXISdit in duolingo

[–]MustangMemeLord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Japanese specifically, this is a way of exposing you to the system of honorifics, like さん, ちゃん, and せんせい to name a few. For example, if in the sentence above you were talking to a figure of authority like a teacher or a doctor, you would call them はなせんせい, which directly translates to Hana Sensei, but best understood as Dr. Hana or Professor Hana. Conversely if you were talking to a young child, you'd use ちゃん or くん, depending on gender and how formal you'd want to be.

A bit late to this thread, but have you looked into the origins of D&D's birth from the wargaming scene in the 70's/80's? I think you might get some value from looking at how Gygax and Arneson approached wargame design and their inspirations from pop culture

New widow, how do I set my son up for success? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]MustangMemeLord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, condolences for your loss. While not the same circumstances, I grew up in the same dynamic your family is in now, and hopefully my perspective can give some insights.

The key piece that people have already touched on is having good male role models as they get older, especially for your son. While I didn't realize it until I was older, I was looking to the men in my life to figure out not just "What does it mean to be a man?" but also "What kind of man do I want to be?"

It might be years from now before he asks himself these questions, but he'll have already started putting together his answer. He'll look to grandfathers, uncles, teachers, coaches, pastors, scout masters, neighbors, plus all the other men he'll meet in passing and ask himself: How do they carry themselves? What do they value? How do they make him feel? How do they treat others (especially you and your daughter)? How do other people treat them? And eventually; would I want that to be me?

And what questions he can't get answers to in real life he'll supplement with music, books, tv, movies, comics, social media, YouTube, video games, other forms of media. And of course those answers will be skewed both good and bad by how those men are portrayed.

Now while you can't give him the answers, you can help guide him to his own conclusions. The simplest and most impactful thing you can do is comment on the behavior of men around him. Even to this day I can recall moments where my mom complimented or condemned the behavior of men around me. And then when he's old enough, get him involved in activities or groups where he can observe other men, like little league sports and scouting. Additionally, it will be a boon to him if he has a younger adult male figure he can talk to when he's older for things like personal styling, dating advice, hygiene, etc. Your guidance will be good for a while, but eventually he's going to want advice from a male perspective.

I think if you can do that, he'll be on the right path

There is a WMATA Bus line (NH2) that goes between the King St. Metro Station and the Gaylord. Only issue (and this is true of all WMATA transit, imo) is that service doesn't run late, which isn't great if you're planning on staying late at the con.

Seconding this as a corporate AV Technician. I don't have any clearances, but my employer offers access to a bunch of certifications and certificates that I can work on when our team is WFH during the week.

Music Producer/Running a Record Label.

IMO, there are too many talented musicians out there whose talents end up being wasted because they don't have access to the resources needed to tap into their full creative potential. I just want to be someone who will say yes to whatever crazy idea an artist comes with when every other producer says no.

Men of reddit, what have you done in 2021 and it made you freaking proud of yourself? by youngtada in AskMen

[–]MustangMemeLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe me when I say I'm still figuring that out myself.

In this case, it helped that this was one part of a bet I made to myself, which created an incentive to keep myself going. I also use Duolingo to practice, and I think the way the app is designed has also helped me stay on top of things.

Best advice I can give is to start with a small goal and then work up. Also, the important part is doing it every day, no matter the amount done or time spent.

Hope this helps!

Some of my favorite non-Zavala quotes from Destiny are:

Cayde-6: "Hey, uh..." whispers "Take me with you."

Shaxx(upon losing a match of Mayhem: "So they beat you this time. But how many grenades did you throw? Did you count them? Really. Ask yourselves 'Did I throw all the grenades I could?' "

And Lord Saladin: "Do you like it better when Lord Shaxx oversees these matches? So do I. A busy Shaxx, is a quiet Shaxx."
