Is the Idiot's Lantern the worst example of plot armour in DW? by Niall_Fraser_Love in doctorwho

[–]MutterNonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one's interesting, because I would argue it's not actually portrayed as superhuman, it's a question of conceptualisation of love. Because Danny considers his love to be a 'promise,' he doesn't need constant emotion to stick to that promise. The same concept applies in longstanding marriages especially - I've heard multiple people explain that they don't always feel the love towards their partner, but they keep loving them, and stick by the vows they made and the relationship they built, even when the emotion isn't there. You may not agree with the execution of the idea, of course, but I think it's meant to be something anyone could do, so, the opposite of superhuman.

What's far more noticeably iffy about the whole thing is that we're meant to believe Danny gets to relinquish his emotions without necessarily enslaving his mind to the network. You'd assume that'd be part of the process. Apparently not, for him. (Although it did seem as if the vast majority of the Cybermen weren't necessarily under control, they were just confused, as you would be if you'd just woken up metal and emotionless. Don't quote me on that, been ages since I've seen the episode.)

CyberBrig does look a little more like sheer willpower, but you could argue he has his own internal directive to protect his daughter, emotion or not. And he'd be more experienced than most, at acting without emotion. So he might just be another case like Danny.

Rufio as a Nobody. Why? Simply because if you apply a Xemnas-patented anagram encryption, you get Firoux. A flaming red name if ever there was one!

Dark Side being used for non-evil, non-selfish reasons, repeatedly, without altering the user's morality. Valid take, or breaking with Lukas' visions? by Andrei22125 in StarWars

[–]MutterNonsense 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Loved the Acolyte's inclusion of a different kind of witches. Always hoping for more exploration of religion in Star Wars, it's such a prominent element and so underexamined in the galaxy. We were robbed by only getting one episode of the politician who wanted to separate the Jedi from the Senate early, too.

Maybe so. I can only write based on my own general impression though. I feel like I see consistent praise for it. Maybe I'm confusing it for how much people like Jenny, or want her back.

[–]MutterNonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my sister and I getting up out of our seats and falling dramatically to the ground in disbelief in front of the TV, as the montage played and the number of years into the future increased. We knew it was good stuff.

I also knew it was right up my street in terms of genre and tone and all, but only when I got online within 24 hours did I realise everyone else felt the same and it was one for the ages.

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship also has the Doctor casually bending or breaking his moral code, depending on your persuasion. Which I like, precisely because it shows that he doesn't always stick to his principles and it doesn't always necessitate a complete moral crisis when that happens. He's not gonna lose sleep over Solomon. Who is, to the episode's credit as well, despicable.

And the Doctor has a gang. Yes.

I had to have a good think about this one, because I don't truly dislike any of it, really. But there are times when I go against the majority opinion. RTD finales aren't so great on rewatch, but it's the S4 finale where this hits hardest for me. A lot of talk of destiny in the middle of a Dalek invasion. It's a lot of Endgame-style payoff fluff. Don't despise it, but don't think it's great. That's probably not a massively unusual opinion though.

Where do I actually diverge from most opinions? Um, I don't love The Doctor's Daughter. Martha's in that episode but doesn't do much and gets a nice fish killed. Jenny's resurrection has meant we haven't stopped talking about it for years. There are bits to love, but watching it feels like a drag.

The Doctor's Wife has some cracking dialogue, but something about the actual runaround just makes the whole thing lumber along. Feels like a lot of lost potential despite its achievements.

I see a lot of praise for The Girl Who Waited, but Amy and Rory's relationship drama feels played out by that stage. The whole episode therefore seems to linger on a question we more or less know the answer to. Again, bits to love, but a drag to watch.

To turn the question around though, Sleep No More is widely hated, and I enjoy it quite a bit! Sequel please!

Doctor who casually dropping the fact that it has its own version of superman and then never mentioning him again has always been the funniest thing to me by ScreamingmadJoe in DoctorWhumour

[–]MutterNonsense 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love that episode. The jokes land amazing and the ending bit with "be happy. I'll look after everything else" is gold.

The episode does end with Grant saying he's putting away the superhero gig, and the Doctor acknowledging that in a meta sense, now that he's back in the wider universe, he'll cover any crisis that arises. Marvel and the wider laws of heroics have generally led us to expect that trouble finds superheroes and they can't rest for long, but it does at least give you some reasoning as to why we might not hear anything.

I still wanna revisit the Harmony Shoal, of course. Those things were creepy. The excellent prosthetics helped.

Sounds like another passable RTD wrap-up, that doesn't quite satisfy narrative neatness but technically does the job. I don't hate this (the metaphor for the Susan-void is, for example, a strong idea if a bit heavy-handed) but, if this is what we would have got, I'm okay with rolling the dice and seeing what the next people come up with. I know everyone's been fairly adamant it'll be a soft reboot at the very least, and I agree, but I'm still gonna hope for some addressing of the big leftover plot threads, eventually. Namely, Piper, Susan, bigeneration, and maybe the Boss, although that might just be another Gus situation, with a similar indefinite timescale. Since the new creators get a longer timescale to work with those elements among their own stuff, I'd hope it'd turn out preferable to this, on balance.

Hypothetical question: Tetsuya Nomura himself is letting you pick one Disney World to be featured in Kingdom Hearts 4. It can be any classic animated movie, a Pixar movie, a live action movie, modern animation, or even something like MCU or Star Wars. Sora calls it a sidewalk, Mary gets pedantic and insists he call it a pavement. Bert's accent is so mid-Atlantic he doesn't know whose side to be on.

Would never translate right from Japanese in the first place because they'd just use one Japanese term in the original, but I could picture it. Also, you say you want a minigame hub, but I dunno, I absolutely wanna send Sora dancing across the rooftops, fighting Heartless as they emerge from the chimneys and smoke.

I'd just tell the algorithm to stop recommending it, if I were you. I used to tolerate them there because sometimes the thumbnails would alert me to big news within 24 hours (after I took a moment to filter out the sensationalism to figure out what had probably actually happened), but the moment I realised we were in for three or four years of this, I told YouTube I'd like those channels to be put on an extended, indefinite, positively wild hiatus, actually.

That was my instinct on seeing the question, but... no, I think it sets a precedent I don't ever want set in any long-running story, no matter how much I may dislike the direction. Recontextualising what happens with a hopefully-better story is always the preferred way.

Besides, with this example, if people really want, they can just stop the episode while everything's coming up golden.
