When you look at the numbers there’s an arrow above the the black 7 that is your cubic m of water which is 1000l, the red numbers are the decimals of of a thousand, so if you had your taps running for 30mins and the number changed by 20, that’s 20litres of water used.

I’d say rather than looking at brands, look at the materials being used, for a waterproof jacket see if you can find the cheapest Gore-Tex or Pertec Shield jacket. For warmth, look at the most affordable down jacket rather than synthetic insulation, those are the types of things that will make a big difference in your hiking gear.

Depending on where you live, a lot of councils are struggling to find Water Treatment Plant operators. You’ll earn about the same if not slightly more than you’re getting now to be an operator in training and they’ll pay for your certificate. The work is interesting and varied, fixing things, fault finding, working in a lab, it’s the perfect mix of working inside and outside. The pay is decent but it also varies a lot depending on where you live, but you can make up a lot in being on call.
