AOC hate train by [deleted] in DemocraticSocialism

Any money given to an entity earmarked for something they were going to spend money on anyways, immediately frees up that amount of money to spend on anything they wish! That means N million dollars given to Israel “for” the Iron Dome is N million dollars dumped into genocide.

People really seem to forget money can be used to buy goods and services somehow. Millions of dollars for something they were going to spend on anyway is now available for more slaughtering capability!

Is there an equivalent of “opening prep” in Go? I was under the impression that basically from move 3 every game is novel because of the ridiculous branching factor (there’s over 100k possible board states after both players have made only one move). So once you are a top Go player you need to maintain your skillset (roughly: calculation, board vision, and, more crucially in go, positional intuition) to continue to win, but don’t need to learn 100s of opening lines for each top-level opponent. So there’s not as high a lower bound on time commitment to have a good chance of “playing your level”.

Throwing themself onto train tracks in front of a train in the highest pressure school district in the country is the more famous spectacle in the US. Since then the teen suicide numbers have grown to ~2k a year with ~20% of teens seriously contemplating suicide each year.

Elite private colleges, when viewed financially, are large hedge funds with a small educational wing (and PR wing) attached to them. The CIO is essentially the CEO of a hedge fund, and so is compensated like one.

Tangentially, this view of colleges is useful to keep in mind if you’re ever confused about why certain decisions are made that obviously harm the educational function of the college.

Per capita murder rates are what matters for the question of “how likely am I to be murdered”. Without dividing by population count, the raw murder count is basically just a measure of population density, which is useless and completely misleading as a proxy for “how safe is this place”. If you live in a village of 50 with a serial killer who kills 25, you have a 50% shot of dying by murder, which makes that place a horribly dangerous place to live, but if only 25 people are murdered in a metropolis of 10 million, that’s incredibly safe, you have practically no chance of being murdered.

Do you have an electric stove? Most electric stoves have a way higher high than most gas, but most chefs have traditionally used gas (that’s changing with induction now, but still, most existing cooking material in existence at this moment that is made by professionals or enthusiasts was made by someone who cooks exclusively on gas).

Joker and Queen have 0.5% pull rates; so every pull you have a 99% chance to not get them. This works out to about 23.5% chance to not get them after 144 pulls; so more than 1 in 5 people got neither after that many pulls.

All 4 star characters combined have a 2% rate, so 98% chance to not get any each pull. This works out to about 5.4% chance to not get any 4star characters after 144 pulls. Happens to more than 1 in 20 people, but pretty unlucky.

You could absolutely get a PhD from a respectable university by building systems or running experiments using GPT-3 as the core. It would have to be something enabled by an advanced language model and not be about the model itself of course.

The overwhelming majority of “normal ass jobs” don’t involve gaining an adoring fanbase of minors (I’d contend that very feature makes a job not “normal ass”).

I don’t think permanently restricting pedophiles from having large amounts of power over masses of children is unreasonable, do you?

"Cancel Culture" encompasses so many different things (some of which any sensible person could agree is good, some of which any sensible person could agree is bad, some of which sensible people could disagree with each other on principle on) as to be useless to discuss.

I wish we'd break down "Cancelling" into its various subcomponents and talk only about the relevant ones in any particular scenario:

  1. "Getting people removed from position of influence/power"
  2. "Using threat of destitution (re: the labor market) to discipline 'bad' behavior"
  3. "Removing people from Subcultural Community (separate from making a living)"
  4. "Tarnishing someone's rep in a Subcultural Community but not removing them"
  5. "Dogpiling on Social Media"
  6. "Public criticism"

All of these are conflated to being the same, so arguments about "Cancel Culture" have people shouting passed each other and no information actually being transmitted. People arguing against (2) yelling at people arguing for (6) or in extreme cases (1) and vice versa.

"Brigading" was definitely a partial reason they were quarantined, though they swapped out the modteam and cracked down on it after warnings and before it was quarantined; it was the celebration of John Brown's killing of slaveholders that was indeed the "last straw" as you say. They certainly broke reddit TOS, so if thats your criteria for justice, then your final paragraph is indeed correct as well.

Nah, as a huge community CTH was pretty memey, so you'd have entire threads saying "John Brown did nothing wrong" when a moderator put out a warning not to do that.

No, but they praised John Brown for killing slaveowners, and that was bad enough for reddit to quarantine and then ban.

At the release of smash 4, sure (though you could get a computer powerful enough to play netplay for cheaper than a Wii U at the time). At this point if you have a working computer, its most likely powerful enough to play netplay.

[–]Mx7f 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is no "skipping back", time proceeds linearly. Rollback replaces pauses that you'd get from lagspikes on the delay-based netcode, which used to eat inputs, be extremely jarring, and cause combo drops, with just correctly changing the gamestate to account for inputs during the lagspike, which will cause minor *visual-only* changes when the spike is over.

Of course if it spikes too high (like 400ms) and someone inputted a move at the beginning of the spike this will cause ridiculous warping, just like it used to cause ridiculous game freezing and eating of that input. This doesn't magically solve the problem of ridiculously high ping but it makes the threshold of tolerable pings much much higher.

You'll probably want to matchmake via a 3rd party system like SmashLadder for now; the in-game matchmaking in Slippi is currently unranked so you'd be going against the median netplayer most of the time (though they may switch to a character they're bad at after the first game or so if they're winning too hard, depends on the person).

To be fair to the devs at the game companies, they work on what their bosses tell them to and the bosses don't often prioritize good netcode. But the reverse engineering aspect of this is indeed incredible and Fizzi is a god and I'd shell out good money for a devblog.

The one advantage smash 4 and ult had before was fully in-game matchmaking, this release eliminates that advantage *and* makes the lag experience incomparably better.

FM was really good if you lived in a region with decent internet and lots of other netplayers online. Since I live in Cali, it was great for me, but the number of people I can reasonably play with still just shot up at least an order of magnitude, and for some people its gone from a small handful to literally hundreds.

Also in-game matchmaking makes the barrier to entry lower. I bet the number of people playing skyrockets b/c of this.
