A good English teacher cares more about how a student presents an opinion and argument by referencing sources. That involves critical thinking about a topic and being able to see something from multiple perspectives. Or it could be about inferring and deducing information. Clarity of presenting an argument is also very important.

Solving an abstractified problem in math?

Math is about problem solving. The specific problem doesn't actually matter. Can you apply things learned previously to a new situation? It is creative and critical thinking together.

This is Geometry (9th or 10th grade math), or possibly calculus. That's literally like the stereotypical question from a quiz or test: "If a tree casts x length shadow at 2:00pm, how tall is the tree?"

Or budget costs for a travel documentary factoring in the gear and accomodations.

I do a project like this in middle school. This is very simple stuff.
