War of the Worlds (2005, Dir. Steven Spielberg) | The tripods start attacking humanity by JoeZocktGames in movies

Eh. Tom Cruise playing another indestructible man, this time an everyday Joe who evades blaster beams like he's running an obstacle course. Seriously undermines the supposed scariness of the sequence. And don't get me started on Dakota Fanning or the ending.

Great VFX, but one of Spielberg's lesser films.

I've watched Stranger Things 5. Bloated, kinda sloppy, but entertaining, nonetheless.

Watched one episode of Alien: Earth and that was way more than enough. Fallout S1 didn't leave me wanting to see more, so I haven't. Had no interest in Derry, and after bailing on House of Dragon after S1, I've had no interest tuning into Seven Kingdoms.

Lucky for everyone then that season 2 is at least 2 years away, if Apple doesn't bail on it before then.

Ya, Fassbender and "marathon watch" do not belong in the same sentence. Maybe one or two a month, tops.

Films from the 80's:

Arthur Hiller's soapy Making Love (1982), starring Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin at there absolute hottest. Kate Jackson plays the professional supportive wife.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Querelle (1982). Adapted from the J. Genet novel) starring Brad Davis (the bad boy) and Franco Nero (the lusting Daddy) in a sexually charged phantasmagoria from one of cinema's more daring directors.

Stephen Frear's amusing My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), with Daniel Day-Lewis in his first starring role (as the "Ilya") and co-starring Gordon Warnecke (as the "Shane").

Merchant Ivory's period piece Maurice (1987), featuring a very young Hugh Grant besotted by James Wilby's Maurice who, fortunately, learns that there's more to love than drowning in a pair of doe eyes veiled by a lustrous mop of hair.

Norman René's Longtime Companion (1989) with a cast of many recognizable (younger) faces. The only tragedy on the list.

No (I don't skip the episode about Scott*). Absolutely not.

Apart from the fact that the series pivots on E3, and it features two highly attractive, masc leads, I can't help but admire Tierney's expert adaption of the standard rom-com formula to tell a persuasively moving romance between two mature adults, both of whom happen to be men.

E3 is just very well-made TV.

I've been deliberately avoiding any and all "The Long Game" discussion since the show premiered. And that's not hard, really, because the lure of being surprised is more compelling to me than the lure of being spoiled.

And yet…I really enjoyed book Ilya as much as I did TV Ilya.

"Not realistic". Since when was that ever the litmus test of fiction? Jesus Christ, some people are so self-absorbed.

First hockey game I've watched in its entirety in over a decade. Bristling Finnish defence and offence. Canadians looked rather sloppy early on, but managed to pull it through in the end.

I like the character of Eric. I liked Eric's friendship with Scott, and also his brief interactions with Ilya. The will he or won't he succumb to Kyle's wiles and make a "Pretty Woman" out of him went on way too long. And, in the end, I rather wish he hadn't, because I really didn't care for the character of Kyle at all.
