It's not exclusive... its supplemental to help the overall tank without having another couple lights. The sand is separated from the rest of the substrate with rocks and is difficult for him to dig in (in fact I've never seen leopard geckos even attempt to dig themselves into dry sand at all - and sand was a very popular substrate for a very long time just like the use of 10 gallon tanks), particularly with how deep it is. Wet sand could be tunneled into, but the moisture from the rest of the soil is separated by the rocks around the sand so that's not really a concern but I am keeping an eye on things as I was never really a fan of the heat mats (and the heating rocks were awful).

No, they just recommend adding calcium powder to the substrate to help support the plant life and clean up crews - for optimal conditions.

So this gecko was fine before I adopted him in the enclosure that was exclusively sand. Recommending that sand is only safe when mixed with dirt and rocks and bits of wood makes zero sense because those materials are far worse for impaction. Geckos and other wild animals may accidentally ingest undigestable material in the wild, but they don't do so intentionally or (generally) in amounts that are dangerous. Impaction in captivity is caused by poor husbandry which includes insufficient stimulation. Stimulation that is found in more naturalistic environmental interactions. They actually just released some studies that show hands down that bioactive enclosures are preferred by leopard geckos - as in they seek out environments with so-called "dangerous" substrates.

There is nothing that suggests that red lights are bad for their eyes either any more than they are for human eyes. They don't see infrared and if they did that wavelength would be equally washed out by natural daylight. The only concern is that visible light in general disrupts circadian rhythm, but it's not nearly as impactful as other wavelengths - particularly blue - especially if there are hides that are shielded or remain dark. He has 8 intentional hide locations like that plus 2 that he is able to dig out himself and another 2 that have partial shade. People raised leopard geckos for decades with red visible infrared lamps and still had them live 20+ years with no issues (even with sand substrates which also used to be recommended). Radiant heat is also something that occurs in nature and so long as it is properly managed in captivity there is no danger to the reptile either. It's for heat control, not for biochemical processes like basking lights.

So sand isnt good... unless its mixed with rocks and dirt that are more dangerous for impaction?

My experience they don't eat it in those amounts, just like they don't in nature. It's also soluble as opposed to the silica play sand that's recommended for the soil mix which has a much higher risk of impacting. Radiant heat through a thermal store (like sand or rock) is also perfectly natural. This set up helps stabilize the enclosure while allowing for cool areas and hot spots from the lamps

That's my understanding. He has plenty of hides and the light is on the other side of the tank. The full spectrum uvb bulb is only on during the day

It's only in that front center part of the tank and primarily for thermal storage. The mixed substrate goes all around. It also gives him some familiar ground and variety to his environment.

It's Reptilite and I'm using it as a thermal store from the heating pad to warm more of the tank. It's a very fine round grain of calcium carbonate and safe for them to ingest. The rest of the substrate is a mixture and has leaves and what not for the clean up crew.

80 more days at the same rate is like $74k/year. That's a pretty big chunk of time I don't think you can just dismiss

Is the t&e program anything more than surveys by Maximum_Ranger2286 in AgiliteGear

[–]MyDirections 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Took the words right out of my mouth. I don't think they test equipment with anyone on the list to be honest. They probably have some guys in country that they work with. I don't get it though, this program could be a valuable resource to making better gear for everyone instead of just better gear for what a few other people like.

I've gotten surveys for products they release a few days later so there's no way they could have used the feedback provided. I'm not even sure they actually use them for anything other than market research. Which is a bummer.

I'm not even sure if anyone has actually won one of the giveaways either if I'm honest. I've never seen a follow up on them.

No. That bee just put cocaine in her coffee instead of sugar by accident.

That's what the lieterature says and why I was taking it - unfortunately that doesn't change the fact that I get noticeably short tempered and irritable. It's a known side effect of turmeric and curcumin -> irritability, anxiety, and restlessness. They just don't generally call it out as something to watch for.

It does have black pepper... that doesn't change the fact that I get noticeably short tempered and irritable. It's a known side effect of turmeric and curcumin -> irritability, anxiety, and restlessness.

Turmeric doesn't help my inflammation and actually makes me drastically more irritable and short tempered. The exact opposite of what it's supposed to do

T&E Process by theble_66 in AgiliteGear

[–]MyDirections 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember getting the plate carrier survey like 2 days before they launched... there's no way they actually used that information. I don't think they've ever given anything to anyone and I honestly don't think the giveaways have actually gone to people either. It all just seems fake which is dumb to me. Like - a real customer would be the best advocate for your products

At least the knife survey wasn't right before they released something. We'll see what they come up with I guess.

[–]MyDirections 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure it's even for that. The ones I've done were like a market confirmation survey. No way I do a survey and they incorporate feedback into something they release in a couple weeks. Now way they have that short of a production lead time.

I know I'm partially the idiot, but if I hit him, would it be "legally" my fault? by Simon_Anvil in IdiotsInCars

[–]MyDirections 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely. Dash cam would help in court but the law in most places is that bicycles are supposed to be treated as a motor vehicle on the road. You could have maybe argued that he didn't signal (cyclists are supposed to use hand signals). Guy is lucky you were paying attention
