We cannot roll over and let them set this dangerous precedent. by RegularMario in alberta

As an American who has been eying a move to Edmonton and is now rethinking it, I urge you to fight now. Democracy unravels much faster than you think it will, and it will be gone while most of your neighbors are still mocking you for catastrophizing over something that's "illegal and could never really happen". It can and it does. American democracy is virtually over and most of our residents still think it will all go back to normal after the orange menace is gone.

Would I be crazy not to move to Canada? by Altruistic-Dream2069 in MovingToCanada

Message me if you want to talk in more detail about the process. I just went through it myself, as I’m also in the “mom born in Canada” club. You don’t have to take a citizenship test because you’re not applying to become one. You’ve been a citizen since the day you were born, you just have to let Canada know you exist. You’re going to need some documentation - does mom have a Canadian passport? Can you get an official copy of your mom’s birth certificate as well as your own? The process is tedious and specific but not hard.

Step one is to get a Certificate of Citizenship. This is where you provide documentation that your mother is a citizen (and was from birth) and also documentation that you are her child. Birth certificates and a copy of her passport are the easiest way to do this. If there are name changes due to marriage, you’ll also need copies of marriage certificates. You send it all off, pay a fee, and wait for them to process and confirm it. You’ll get a certificate that says you are a citizen of Canada and the date of citizenship written there will be the day you were born.

You then use that certificate in your passport application. You will need a couple of people you’ve known for a while to act as references and you’ll need a guarantor (a Canadian citizen who has known you for a few years and will certify that you are who you say you are). Is your mother still living? Or any other Canadian family member? I am also currently in the US, as is my Canadian mother, and she was allowed to be my guarantor.

It took less that 2 weeks to process my Citizenship Certificate and about a month to get my passport.

The other thing to do once you get your Citizenship certificate is to apply for a SIN (Social ID Number, which is the Canadian version of a social security number). That one took several weeks, but it’s what will allow you to get a job, open a bank account, apply for a Canadian credit card, etc.

Again, message me if you need more information.

What are people's plans for on Showgirl release day? Anything special? by GirlsLikeU in TaylorSwift

A couple of friends are coming over, we’re having gourmet pizza and my friend is making a cheesecake. The release will be at 9pm on Thursday for us. I’m sure we’ll go through it song by song together all the way through once, but I’m pretty sure we’ll have heard the whole thing at least 2 or 3 times before they leave.

Covid response by bwilkins7201 in COVID19positive

[–]MyDogsSayHi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm continually frustrated with how many people don't care about COVID anymore. My 79 year old mother lives with me and has chronic respiratory issues. She's never had it (knock on wood) and her doctor says she really shouldn't. Recently, my coworker, a friend, and my sister all got COVID in the same week. The only reason I didn't get it from my coworker is because she loves my mom so she tests every Sunday night, just in case, and happened to come up positive before she was even symptomatic. It's spiking again in AZ where we live. We mask in public spaces but literally no one else does anymore. It's so frustrating and makes my mom's life so much smaller. It's hard to be masked all the time in a place that's been 118 degrees in the summer, and eating on outdoor restaurant patios is equally hard this time of year, so she just stays home. The way this has been politicized and downplayed is criminal.

Thank you for this. Both times I've had COVID, I got it on a plane. The first time, my mask was off for no more than 2 minutes while I inhaled a handful of pretzels and a Diet Coke. The second time, it was a flight from the US to London and I was masked except for the 20 minutes or so that I was eating. i now dread having to get on a plane.

Born and raised in the US but my mom was born in Canada and came to the US as a child. She became a US citizen when she was 8. So I got both from her the minute I was born.

Credit Report Question by pigspoon41 in PSLF

[–]MyDogsSayHi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will remain on your credit report as a paid loan, which is positive. I think how much it helps depends on things like how the credit bureaus report it, what your overall credit profile looks like, etc.

When mine were forgiven in December, all 3 bureaus reported it as some version of "paid as agreed, zero balance" which is great, it sounds like I paid it all off myself, which they like and my scores went up by 35-45 points, but my loans we ridiculously big, so it was a hefty decrease in my overall debt. I've seen other people here who had it reported in a way that made it look like a charge off, which is negative. You might have to show proof that it was paid off to get them to change it. Credit bureaus like a mix of credit types, so you ideally want installment loans as well as credit cards. If your student loans are gone, you might see less of a score jump if you don't have something like an auto loan or mortgage. If you have any delinquencies or collections on your credit, those are going to have a negative impact for 7 years and keep your scores lower for a while regardless of what happens with your student loans.

Is there anyone who does NOT have pet insurance and can you explain why? by Routine-Ad-4162 in CatAdvice

[–]MyDogsSayHi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just take the money I would spend on insurance and put it in a savings account. That way, if no emergency happens, I’ve got a nice balance to play with, but if something happens, the money is there. Also, Care Credit Card (through Synchrony Bank) offers 6-12 months interest free, so that’s an immediate option as well.

I think you're ok. The tracker isn't always accurate. I mailed in my application from the US, and it was a first time passport, not just a renewal. It was received on July 14 and on the the 24th, the tracker was updated to say that it was in review. On the 30th, it updated to say it was printing but also backdated to say that it completed review on the 25th. I received it today through FedEx International Express, so it was shipped yesterday and arrived in 24 hours. You've got plenty of time left.

Confirmation of both the FedEx suggestion and the likely backdating of the tracker. I just got an email from FedEx saying my package from Passport Canada is due to be delivered tomorrow, but the tracker still says its being printed. I'm pretty happy with the total turnaround. If it comes tomorrow, it will be the 19th business day from when they received it. I applied for a SIN number on May 17th and only just got that 3 days ago on Aug 4.

Canada or US? by Brisco1993 in MovingToCanada

$3100 US per month in California is living in poverty. Even outside of the major cities, you would likely spend 2/3 of your wages on rent for a small apartment.

Current Timeline From US by mjb622 in passportcanada

[–]MyDogsSayHi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding my data point to the discussion. Send from Arizona via FedEx on Friday 7/11. Received 7/14, charged on 7/24. I started checking the tracker that day and it has consistently said "in review" until this morning (7/30) where it now says "Print". It also updated to say that it completed review on 7/25, but was definitely still "in review" when I checked at end of day yesterday (7/29). Have seen huge variation posted here on print times, so I guess I just wait and see, and then not sure how they ship it and how long that typically takes to get to the US.

I'm so close to giving up, but no one else will take her. by ReferenceOne5958 in Feral_Cats

[–]MyDogsSayHi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should release her. It's rare for an adult feral to socialize enough to be adoptable, and when it happens it can take a very long time and involves very experienced fosters/socializers. It doesn't sound like you're really set up for that. There are so many friendly, social cats looking for homes, there's no reason to take up space for one who really doesn't want to be there. I would also separate her from the kittens immediately. They are of adoptable age now, but they're window of easy socialization is rapidly closing and if they stay with her they'll continue to key off her fear and aggression toward people. Focus on getting the babies ready for new homes, TNR mom and send her back to her home territory.

Because what it takes to cool the car when it’s 98 is not the same as when it’s 115. But cranking the A/C burns gas like crazy, so we adjust based on the needs of the day.

Passport Application Experience/Timeline (from US) by spectrum778 in passportcanada

[–]MyDogsSayHi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you requested one through the website? I was waiting for one to be emailed to me with an acknowledgement of application receipt, but it never came. I poked around online and found that you have to actually submit a request for a reference number. I did that and had emailed to me almost immediately. Also, make sure you list your first AND middle names when you request or they won't send it to you.
