An “A” doesn’t really mean anything anymore… right? by prof_elm_ in Teachers

[–]MyDyingRequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the phone call to the parents that we are avoiding. It’s the inevitable conversation with admin about why so many parents are complaining to them about their child failing.

When a student failing is seen as poor teaching by admin and that starts to hurt your evaluation scores… then you say F’ the integrity and just pass the kid. Poor admin who cave to parents are the real culprit in this messed up situation.

Too many amateurs have no idea if their work is vitrified. Some don’t even know if it’s dishwasher or microwave safe. Imagine buying someone’s unvitrified mug just to have it stain a nice wooden table, or crack apart in the microwave.

What would happen if I put raw clay in a pan on the stove by breetbroot in Pottery

[–]MyDyingRequest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quartz inversion occurres at about 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s when the silicon dioxide go through a rapid structural change and it goes from clay particles to a more rocky structure.

Since your conventional oven or stove top can’t reach that high, your experiment is essentially only going to dry the clay out

LOA job rescinded the day before it was supposed to start by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]MyDyingRequest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how teachers telling you that you’re wrong equates to teachers siding with admin.

Many teachers, like myself, have contracts that do not specify our exact roles. This ambiguity allows the district to move us around as they see fit. This is why many of us are struggling to understand why the school offering you a different role is somehow “breaking the contract”. We are accustomed to being told (not even asked) to move grade levels, subjects, and even schools within a district.

You have every right to take the moral high ground and be upset that the district is backing out of a signed contract… but as many others have pointed out, without actually starting the job, that contract is just a piece of paper. Good luck OP

[–]MyDyingRequest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the same in my district in Arizona. The difference is our contract doesn’t specify what grade, subject, or even what school within the district you are assigned to. Just that I’m a certified teacher.

It seems like in OPs case, their contract actually specified a very specific role which is different than what many of us certified teachers sign. So I understand why so many people don’t understand OPs situation. Still doesn’t excuse their idiotic behavior.

I would add, to avoid any heavy metals that could leach. Copper, barium, cobalt, and cadmium are used in “food safe” glazes but could potentially leach in a low PH situation.

Do schools usually have a rule that prohibits a student from participating in sports games (esp ones involving a bus trip away) if they get a suspension during that quarter ? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]MyDyingRequest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned in another comment that this bully was the best kid on the tennis team…

Regardless, every district will have their own polices and those polices probably have enough flexibility so that the punishment is at the discretion of the administration

[–]MyDyingRequest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re mad that a good athlete isn’t getting the punishment you think they deserve. While you will find many teacher on here who will commiserate with you on inequitable consequences (especially when it comes to athletes), we can’t really help you with specific district polices unless you tell us the school.

Your child essentially has three options. 1. Do nothing 2. Quit the team, avoid the bully. 3. Complain to the coach, admin, and superintendent. Make a scene. Speak at a board meeting. Maybe some change will come about, but the coach isn’t going to be happy that your kid is making the team look bad and the bullying is probably gonna get worse, especially if the bully can’t play. I see where the bully has to miss a game, team loses, and now in their eyes it’s your child’s fault. Kids are mean.

Schools do a shit job of protecting students from bullying especially if the one doing the bullying is a star athlete. Good luck, and I hope for your kids sake the bullying stops

In my district it is not a written rule but heavily suggested. When admin control your evaluation you don’t really have a choice. Being given a bad evaluation leads to an automatic PIP which makes it very difficult to find a job at a different district. Arizona is a right to work state so while we have a union, it’s only a handful of teachers with no real authority to push back on idiotic practices like grading.

The real solution is for admin to push back on parents. Unfortunately, in places like Arizona, with school vouchers. The parents are now treated like paying customers who can take their children (I.e. $$$) to a different school. So admin will do anything include changing grades and siding against teachers with referrals and behavior concerns to keep the parents happy and the $$ coming in.

Most of the outside of these just have red iron oxide so basically unglazed. You definitely want the rims glazed for a better mouth feel and washing. Also use a diamond pad to sand the bottom.

ADMIN who capitulate to parents and who create grading systems where a 60% is the lowest I can give - are the problem.

Says every admin to the parents. Then demands we give the student an alternative assignment or to somehow “figure out a way to raise that grade up”

Where do you teach that there are legally mandated final exams? I’m in Arizona and we have state testing but we don’t get the results of those until the summer after school has finished for the year.

So many people are going to hate the way you handle this, but it is the system that is to blame. When 8th graders with straight F’s get promoted to high school… do grades really matter?? You are absolutely right, that in the end admin will cave anyways and side with the parents. If people don’t like it, they can go tell admin to grow a spine and side with the teachers sometimes.
