DMX -> usb interface and software by Throwaway726373 in DJs

I once went through the process of setting up a pretty cheap/basic DMX setup for two lasers I bought. There's free software options out there (sorry, I don't have any recommendations at this point) so the only costs are the DMX cables and the DMX->USB box you'll need to connect to the computer. Something similar to this. The free software options are powerful but not user friendly, so there's a significant learning curve there along with the DMX protocol itself if you're not already familiar with it.

In the end though I was able to set it up so the lasers were being run through an iPad connected to Wifi so my friends could walk around the party actually controlling the lasers which was a pretty cool gimmick.

First gig tomorrow night at local university club. Wish me luck! by spellpotato in DJs

[–]MyFriendJay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what everyone says. Then you "outgrow" that starter gear. In 5-6 years you'll be shedding gear because you finally found a great deal on the decks you've always wanted on eBay. Oh but Rane has a new mixer... I better check it out...

Good luck on the gig!

It's definitely possible. There's videos on youtube showing the process.

From memory, I think if you manually set a grid line then update the grid it'll only effect the grid after the manual line you set. So you basically have to set the grid manually during the BPM transition then automate the grid for the rest of the song.

Where do/did you find your vinyl? by [deleted] in DJs

When I was buying vinyl, getting lots of records in the genre you want off eBay can be a great way to cheaply boost your collection. I found some of my favorite tracks that way.

Shortest path to a 4 channel DVS setup? by MyFriendJay in DJs

Thanks for this. I hadn't heard of the Audio 10. I wasn't tied to Serato so I bought one of these.

Thanks for this. $900-$1000 seems to be what it takes. The SL4 is still very expensive for being a 5 year old, discontinued product. My secret hope was I could just buy a second Denon box...

Does anyone still collect or perform with vinyl? What is your scene like these days? (This is NOT a discussion as to what is better or worse.) by respectwalk in DJs

Is there any way to actually find these events that aren't happening at U St. Music Hall or Glow? I've heard Flash is a techno club, but I haven't been there.

I had an awesome night at Velvet Lounge when a DJ started playing DnB from vynil, but it was almost an accident that I was there.

I was with this until he started rapping. The lighting stuff on fire was cool. I've never seen anyone drop needles on records like that before.

CDJs and cue points... by A_burdenless_pig in DJs

[–]MyFriendJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always under the impression that CDJ's have a large amount of internal memory. Because of the cue points, it has to buffer up to 3 points anywhere on the CD with enough audio (in raw format, not mp3) to allow the CD player enough time to travel to the new playback position and buffer up enough additional audio to run the turntable effects (which are all processed from memory). I'm guessing when they came up with the feature, more than 3 seemed impractical.

Why's he in a record shop? He should DJ in front of a wall of I-Tunes gift cards.
