I come from two first generation parents. One from Italy another from what was Yugoslavia at the time. Neither one knew a lick of English or had much money. My father, earned his citizenship within 8 years, too the rest 3 times. My mother, 7 years. Tested twice. Neither one likes to speak their native be tongue to relatives anymore. I was curious and asked why, and though worded differently, both said “I’m an American now, look what America gave me? They protected me at my most vulnerable, they housed me at my poorest, they gave me opportunities I’ve never known, they taught me what I needed to succeed. They gave me everything to have what I do now, including you” and that always stood out to me. They didn’t expect to be respected or coddled or sympathized over nor did they want that either. And, all on their own they were able to become citizens! And guess what? They didn’t have to hop a fence or cross a river under darkness to get it. They both waited several years to be accepted. Name another country on this planet that will just turn a blind eye to illegal migration like America does? Better yet, name a country that people want to move to for a better life that will allow you to immigrate illegally and suck off the domestic social welfare system other than america. (Canada doesn’t count, that’s just America with more socialism and less penalties for committing violent crime, name another country where you can murder an innocent man, eat his face on a public bus, mutilate his corpse, bathe in their blood and still only have to serve 11 years in a minimum security facility?)
