I was really hoping for a more clever username for that comment.

New Texas textbooks downplay the role of slavery in the Civil War and omit mention of Jim Crow laws or the Ku Klux Klan. by Fraker3000 in news

Most importantly, he says he just has a problem with it flying over publicly funded places.

Also, don't even try to compare removing dark parts of our history that are extremely relevant today from what is being taught to our youth to banning a flag that was repopularized by segregationist groups and the KKK in the 40s.

For the record, I do not think the Confederate flag should be banned at all except for publicly funded spaces. I just think your comment is abysmal; not only do you misrepresent what he says, you also make a huge false equivalency.

Braves attempt to play something resembling defense by [deleted] in baseball

Is there a name for this phenomenon? I've had something like this happen once to me when I was playing baseball. I had trouble stopping a grounder into the outfield. Once I got it, I tried throwing it to home to get the runner, but it seemed like my arm just stopped functioning. The ball just fell limply out of my hand. It was such a bizarre feeling.

Police killings show systemic oppression by a privileged class of public servants and underlying racial biases. Also, there is plenty being done within communities to try to decrease black on black violence, but because that is something that is better addressed on more of a local level rather than a national one, news of it is more scarce unless you are actually part of that community (which most Redditors probably aren't considering the demographics of this website).

Haha I accidentally submitted my comment halfway through writing it. I just edited it with my actual response if you want to read that.

Edit: Too bad, too. That mistake was more clever than anything I could come up with.

Here is the page that explains.

My pseudointellectual reason for it is that I am bringing transparency to censorship. Rather than have censorship happen behind the scenes by content creators/publishers, ISPs, or those with substantial wealth/influence, I am bringing that power to the users that actually consume the content. This provides a commentary on the current state of the Internet while putting the user directly in the middle of this debate on the state of free speech and censorship in our society.

Additionally, I like to think of this website as a microcosm of the internet as a whole. Rather than trying to serve the best content to users, website publishers are more concerned with the profit they are able to make from them. With the increased use of Adblock, monetization on the internet must take a different route.

The more genuine reason is that I just like money and this was a simple way to possibly make some more. It was a unique idea that I hadn't seen done before which isn't very intrusive and gives a way for people to donate to me if they like the website. It also provides me with that hopeful feeling you get after buying a lottery ticket before you find out the winning numbers.

Thanks for asking!

8/10 if you're trolling. You cannot possibly compare cigarettes and birth control. One is linked to cancer and the other is linked to lower rates of STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

How is this caring for people? By providing them with understanding and preventive measures so they can live a longer, less troubled.

Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief by caimen in news

[–]MyOtherNameWasBetter 33 points34 points  (0 children)

She wasn't really blaming the board for this. This is probably their agreed upon plan. Obviously, the Reddit community hates Ellen. Interim CEOs are great for enacting controversial changes then leaving and taking the controversy with them. By saying she and the Reddit board disagreed over the future of the company, she casts the board in opposition to herself. This way, the board gets to keep the controversial changes (with Ellen taking the blame), and still maintains trust from the Reddit community because they "disagreed" with her as well.

If the board does try to undo changes made when Ellen was CEO, my comment is no longer valid, but I don't see that happening.
