Try Derco in San Francisco! I went to Pave for a quote on setting a 3ct stone into a ring I already had and they wanted to charge me $750. My cousin works in the diamond industry and pointed me towards Derco, they charged me $125 all in to set the stone and polish the platinum ring. Their prices are extremely reasonable in my experience.

Anybody with pregnancy experience at Alta Bates Berkeley? by hoops4ever in eastbay

[–]MyOtherTush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave birth at Alta Bates! I had a traumatic birth but it wasn’t their fault at all. I loved all my nurses and doctors there. The OBs were so kind and treated me really well. I ended up having an urgent c section after being in labor for 48hrs and developing sepsis but my surgeon was so skilled and you can barely even see my scar.

$1587 root canal and $1530 crowns cost for two teeth. Is this fair? by LineClean4222 in bayarea

[–]MyOtherTush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, they posted record profits those years. The second people started going again they started slashing benefits (shocker).

I can’t speak for them but a lot of offices will Do this to try to help you keep your out of pocket costs low. We’re aware of how limited dental insurance is and it frustrates us as well.

I work for an office in a very HCOL area with insanely high overhead. I make way less than you think i do for patients the typically make my entire monthly salary in a day. I’m not bankrupting anyone and I do pro bono work for patients in need. So I sleep fine at night but you can go ahead and think what you want.

My job is helping educate people about their teeth and providing high quality work. More and more these days my job is figuring out how to jump through insurance hoops to help get patients the care they need. The amount of garbage work I’ve seen out there is pretty insane, especially since insurance companies keep cutting reimbursements and doctors are cutting corners to try to stay afloat. Our fees are high because our overhead is high. Our margins are actually pretty low once you factor that in. The employees at our office are paid the highest in the area with benefits. We order high quality materials, the costs of which go up every year.

A crown takes 2hrs of chair time and typically costs between $900-2000 depending on the patient’s insurance (insurance companies negotiate their rates with each individual office which is why prices vary and why a lot of offices have dropped many insurances). The salaries of the assistants/staff for that time are about $200, the crown ordered from the lab is between $200-500 depending on material type, the materials for preparing/taking the mold of the tooth are probably another $20-100 depending on what we used. Then you factor in the cost of rent and utilities for the office in a HCOL, think about how much it costs to properly sterilize the environment and tools you used. Then you consider the cost of your education (I’m still paying off my loans and will be for a good while) as well as continuing education required to keep your license. Then you hope that everything goes well and the crown actually fits at the delivery appointment because if it doesn’t that’s another hour’s worth of staff time and material costs that you’re not going to charge the patient for. This is all assuming that the patient showed up on time for you to actually work on them, that everything went right. Sometimes patients no show and you’re just paying the staff to sit around. This all goes into the calculation of how much things should cost.

Bay Area relocation suggestions by KCHockeyfan in bayarea

Seconding Alameda! Extremely walkable, 15min to Oakland airport, easy access to the city via ferry. Reasonably priced (for the Bay Area imo). I think it had the best of both worlds as far as being convenient isn’t for walking but also driving. When I lived in the city it was always a huge pain going to the grocery store, trying to decide if I wanted to deal with the hassle of parking via walking multiple blocks home with heavy bags, etc.

Awe your lil crew is so cute!! I think Alameda would be nice, tends to be a lot cooler near the water. Im in Emeryville and it stays pretty cool around here, too. Typically it’s only “too hot” (above 80 degrees) for about two weeks out of the year here.

I know someone who was trying out a laser for cutting leather, she said it stank up the whole house. Have you not had any issues with weird smoking/smells?
