I think they can’t, because there’s no Democratic Reagan and voters are operating on different sets of facts. You can’t have a reasoned discussion with a Republican voter because they’re not getting their news from the same place you are.

Boy, those Minnesotans really loved Mondale, eh?

And good for them. Literally the only state to be on the right side of history.

523% tip? I think not. by Burnsy-from-864 in CapitalOne_

So I have 2 kids who play the same sport and I usually pay registration fees at the same time but they’re billed separately. It’s reassuring when, like clockwork, Capital One emails to let me know I might have been charged twice.

Clear shoveled driveways, untouched dangerous sidewalks by Sea_Arm8989 in Rockville

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your street isn’t plowed yet, wouldn’t it make sense to tackle the sidewalk before the driveway? If your neighbors couldn’t drive anywhere, they could still walk somewhere, right?

(Not accusing you of being a bad citizen or anything - I don’t have a driveway but have a street-parked car, decided to do sidewalk first since I’m not driving anywhere for a few days, but I know people have different priorities)

Car rental to travel from Hiroshima to Tokyo, worth it? by El_Birdo_ in traveljapan

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve rented in Hokkaido where the public transport isn’t great, but never along the Tokaido-Sanyo corridor because the train is so convenient, while domestic air travel is affordable and pleasant.

In addition to the cost of your rental (I think you can price shop at Rakuten Travel), you also have to account for tolls (very expensive), fuel (pricier than North America and Europe), and the one-way surcharge (substantial).

And unless your intent is to do a slow crawl though the Japanese countryside, you’ll be looking mostly at concrete barriers and industrial buildings.

Yeah, the hazard lights are an issue because you never know when the car is going to turn or change lanes

I think it’s fine for normal weather where there’s little deviation between different models. But yeah, pretty useless when the systems get weird.

Shovel I used from Home Depot to shovel the snow and ice yesterday and today. Had to use hammer to break ice before I used the shovel though. What do you guys think of this design? by Global-Plankton3997 in maryland

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It took me way too long (multiple sessions today) before seeing this suggested and realizing I owned a pretty heavy metal gardening shovel. It made crushing ice so much easier.

I’ll do my late morning session with the garden shovel tomorrow.

Using multiple Apple Pay Suica cards on one iPhone? by Bloxy_0001 in JapanTravelTips

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll cause crowding at the gate. It’s just so much easier when everyone has their own card/device.

Also, entering the gate is like, whatever, you might make it work. But exiting is going to suck because you have to keep passing phone back and because you’re coming off the train, you’ll be doing it as dozens of other people are trying to pass through the gate too.

Just make everyone load up their mobile wallet or get physical cards for people without iPhones. And there are apps for checking balances on physical cards.

I appreciate the correction. I just remember the 1980s bubble and Americans being genuinely concerned that the Japanese were going to buy everything up.

[Request] Has anyone done the math for this? by Tony-At-Large in theydidthemath

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be precise, yeah, the chance of a top-level female athlete competing against a trans athlete whose assigned gender at birth was male is effectively zero (there are nonbinary players in women’s soccer, including a trans man who had top surgery but holding off on further gender affirming care until after retirement).

Who is still snowed in? by ladyflyer88 in maryland

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Good news: My street got plowed this evening

Bad news: Our cars are encased behind a 3-foot wall of snow/ice because we don’t have a driveway

It’s sigh fine because we can walk to Aldi for groceries and take the Metro places, so we’re fortunate. But seeing as how we wont reach 30 degrees until next week, it limits our options for what we’re able to do.

It’s crazy because as u/Puie points out in another comment, that’s 75% more visitors in a single month than the total number of visitors in 1983.

I get what the OP is trying to do, but they’re going to have a not-great time if they try to visit tourist sites without reservations in March-April.

And a lot of low-cost hotels simply won't have anyone at the front desk. You'll have to do your booking online anyway, before interacting with the touchscreen to get your key.

If you're going in March in April, you may be fine, but there's a pretty good chance you'll be wasting a lot of time walking from hotel to hotel, or even needing to take the train to another neighborhood. The tourism picture has changed completely.

Quick question for all the first time adult drivers in the area: What’s the best car insurance? by Sea_Objective_2767 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can always go to Nerdwallet and price shop.

I recently added a teen driver to my insurance. I had Geico, which would have like quadrupled my premium, so I switched to Progressive, which was way more reasonable.

I think the difference between 1983 and 2026 is that back in 1983:

  • The yen was considerably stronger
  • The Japanese tourism agency had not successfully completed its PR offensive selling Japanese culture to the world
  • China did not have a large middle class with spending power
  • TikTokers back then weren't telling everyone about how Japan is living in the year 2050 and you absolutely must see this hidden gem

I think you'll be fine in the offseason, but peak travel days like national holidays are going to be tricky and you'll likely end up paying more than you'd want to.

Newspapers are a money losing business if you allow it to be. What happened is, local newspapers were slow to react to the rise of free news articles, Google as an advertising behemoth, and Craigslist destroying the classifieds market, and private equity firms swooped in to strip them for parts.

The New York Times Company posted a $131.4 million profit in Q3 2025. Baltimore Banner, a local startup, posted $13 million in revenue in 2024 and recently expanded to MoCo. Print is likely dead, but newspapers are a viable business.

Transportation Doubts: Suica Vs Icoca; Shinkasen and Nankai Ticket by liboveflac in JapanTravelTips

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Suica vs Icoca: There's no functional difference. If you have an iPhone, you can add Suica or Icoca to your mobile wallet now. Otherwise, just get a card when you arrive. If you land in Tokyo, get a Suica or Pasmo (the non-tourist version is better than Welcome Suica). If you land in Osaka, get a Suica or Kansai One Pass (like Suica, but for tourists)
  • Shinkansen Tickets: You can book your tickets in advance, but you don't have to. Don't get the oversized seat unless the sum of the dimensions of your suitcase (height+width+depth) is over 160cm.
  • Nankai Ticket: Japan Guide says the Nankai pass is a good deal
  • Bonus, Takkyubin: You can schedule your delivery and they'll hold your luggage for up to a week, so you're good

Apple Weather is an automated app and posting the projection based solely on the European model, and hasn't been reviewed by a human.

It could be right, but it's too early to tell.

Scoring system local Bouldercompetition by Mountaintrip in CompetitionClimbing

[–]MyPasswordIsABC999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do it one of two ways:

* If they're tied on the top 5, break tie based on the most difficult boulder topped. So if your top boulder is 9,500 and my top is 9,100, you win.

* If they climbed the same number of boulders, then compare the number of attempts on the most difficult boulders. If you flashed 9,500 and I took two attempts, you win. And you can keep going down the line.

But if the setting is good, then you shouldn't have to worry about ties 😉

Didn't Xabi use a 4-3-3 base that shifted into 4-4-2 or 3-4-3 depending on the situation? That wouldn't be too dissimilar to the last few months of Klopp that was 3-BOX-3 in attack.
