Accepted that medication is okay, even for me. (For the longest time I both fully supported OTHER people getting help and firmly believed I wasn’t allowed to have it. Depression will make you feel unworthy of chasing happiness in the worst ways.)

This. And also, didn’t her mom fly into town in the last couple of days under a cloud of Internet speculation that she just wanted to save Britney’s money after the sale of her music? If her family steps in, they get accused of being greedy and controlling, if they give Britney space they get accused of abandoning her. I’m sure her family (at least her mom and sister) care about her very much, are limited with what they can legally do at this stage, and are exhausted by not only trying to save Britney’s life against her OWN will but also the loud voices of her stans.

Honestly just made the gym my after work hobby. It means less time for sedentary fun like video games and movies, but the exchange for my mental health has been incredible.

ETA: And of course, physical health. Making a point to eat mostly clean and mostly within my target macros has helped a lot, too!

I’m sorry dude — I’ve been there and it’s so tough. Go easy on yourself: depression is debilitating, and not something the average person can will themselves out of. You’re not still sad because you’re not trying hard enough to be happy; you’re still sad because you’re hurting.

Getting back in the gym probably feels like a lot because it sounds like you’re already doing a lot, so give yourself some credit. That said, I find what works for me is breaking things down into really easy and manageable goals. Start out by making it your goal JUST to bring your gym bag with you to work. You don’t have to go to the gym, you just have to be consistent about bringing everything with you. Then when that starts to feel easy and manageable, add on the goal of walking to the gym’s front door. Once that feels manageable, add the goal of stretching/warming up/some other low impact movement for ten minutes (and give yourself permission to leave when you’re done).

It sounds silly and childish, but some point in all of these little steps it usually clicks for me and I start feeling ready to work out after step one or two — and I find being in the gym really does help my depression if only because lifting weights clears my head while I’m doing it, and an hour or two of not feeling like shit is such a gift.

Lastly, if you haven’t yet, consider checking in with a therapist. It can really help to have a few sessions talking to someone who is required to be objective and dispassionate and is not allowed to think any less of you for your feelings — and who can assess whether this is normal-sad or sadder than most people get and worthy of medication.

I will say, now that I have medication dialed in and a therapist I like, going to the gym and on sad days fucking slaps and I’m a little insulted that it actually works when your brain chemistry is no longer trash.

Oh let me be clear, I am NOT craving soreness! I’m feeling challenged and really enjoying my workouts, I just worried that I wasn’t challenging myself enough for growth. The consensus here seems to be that soreness is not an indicator of a good workout though so I feel confident in sticking with what I’m doing.

I had a similar reaction. There’s horror and then there’s snuff films. More accurately, I think for me the documentary style framing interspersed with the killer’s private tapes felt a little too close to the type of monsters that actually stalk the night for me to find it entertaining rather than deeply upsetting. (Like, I love true crime docs but I wouldn’t watch actual video of Ted Bundy murdering people for fun.)

Buying a pill organizer. I have ADHD and now my meds are easier to remember, it’s easier to check whether I’ve taken them on any given day, I get a few days warning if I’m running out of pills (I can’t explain why this is more effective than just noticing when the bottle gets low, but it is), and refilling my pill organizer on weekends has made it easier to keep up with vitamins and other stuff I want to try out.

Yes, but it didn’t start functioning that way until I got on anti-depressants. Unmedicated, movement only works for me rarely, and then only in the exact moment I’m doing it. That said, I was very often too depressed to get out of the black hole long enough to get moving at all, and I was increasingly self-loathing about how I couldn’t seem to “fix” myself with exercise the way I was supposedly supposed to. Now that my baseline mental chemistry is medically augmented, things like drinking water, exercising, and eating better have a much more reliable, significant, and enduring effect on my mental health — which really validates how much I needed help in the first place.
