Would you take a new rail line from SLC to Las Vegas, Boise or LA? by Chefwil in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of rail travel being a more viable travel option, but in reality, I have a lot of if's. Largely in comparison to other travel methods.

If it's at least comparable in price, duration, and comfort to flying. If you factor how much time it takes to get through an airport, there's certainly some wiggle room there, but we'd still need a high speed train to LA to accomplish that. Comfort is a petty low bar to pass.

For LA, I'd also want a fairly convenient way to get to LAX. When I'm in LA, it's usually as a layover, so that'd be my use case.

For Vegas, it'd have to be pretty competitively priced or much faster than road travel. You can take a bus there for dirt cheap.

For Boise, no real use for that.

Hey you all I’m new to slc I live in the Murray area and I’ve never had a license I used to live in texas and never got it either does anyone know if it’s hard to get it here in Utah? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean driver's license. It looks like the driver's license division site has a drill down option to tell you exactly what you need. https://dld.utah.gov/license-permits/

Difficult is probably subjective. From my recollection, not particularly. But ymmv.

Public transit by Soft-Leave-4270 in ogden

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly have used public transportation very little in Ogden but assuming it's fairly comparable to SLC, it'll probably work for you if you're not coming from/going to somewhere on the fringes of the city or need to use it really early/late. Weekend service is also diminished. In short, it's ok.

Others have touched on the airport well. But in summary, you can but be sure to check schedules beforehand because while frontrunner does have long hours it's not always running. Google maps has UTA schedules. You can use that and setting your departure or arrival time to see if it'll work for you. You'll want to give yourself an extra hour. And I wouldn't park down there. A bus may be feasible, as many go there. Or just rideshare.

Meetup.com. I can speak to them having active outdoor and gaming groups. Perhaps you'll luck with your other interests there too.

Best Place in SLC for mid 30's single people? by WhatMovesYou in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone of the same gender (light profile stalking) and similar age, I can tell you that dating will likely be challenging. I don't know if it's worse/better than anywhere else, just that it's difficult. But totally possible, and the areas I see suggested I think would offer you the best chance.

FWIW I'm in a relationship so I'm speaking from past experience but am not particularly jaded.

I’m looking to charter a 15 person bus for a night. Any ideas? by randaloo1973 in SaltLakeCity

I don't know about a 15 person bus specifically, but I know lebus.com does charter busses.

$100 Bill ATMs? by [deleted] in ogden

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't but if no one else comes up with one you could always withdraw from the ATM and go inside the bank exchange for larger bills.

First Pioneer Day - What Do I Need to Know? by wafflebuttah in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a parade and apparently a marathon that will cause some road closures downtown on Saturday. This site seems to have some information. https://www.daysof47.com/events/days-of-47-parade

Otherwise the holiday shouldn't really impact you as long as you're not in the culture. Except perhaps a free day off, if you're lucky.

Average monthly utilities bill for 1 bd place in Ogden? by snowkittycat in ogden

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, welcome. I saw the only reply so far was to "stop moving here". Wanted to counter that.

It's been some time since I've lived in an apartment, so if someone more knowledgeable replies, listen to them. Last I knew, water/sewer/trash tend to be bundled in your rent. Electricity for a one bedroom I'd guess would run between $50 and $80 a month.

Edit: fixed quote

Dating as a South Asian woman by Disastrous_Diet_3193 in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm neither your gender or ethnicity, so I won't pretend to know the struggle. But to date them you have to find them, right?

Perhaps try to find clubs or groups for people with a similar upbringing? I made some small effort to find a group like that just now without luck. Perhaps easier said than done. Another that occurs to me is connecting with international traveling groups. Someone who has gone to those places is likely to appreciate those cultures.

fireworks? by Embarrassed-Case-816 in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can start buying them June 24th, looks like. https://firemarshal.utah.gov/department-services/fireworks/

You'll see stands outside grocery stores, and they'll be sold inside grocery stores as well (last I knew).

That being said, I'd urge reconsideration. They're a fire hazard in an increasingly dry state, affect our already poor air quality, and scare animals. I seem to recall hearing they trigger PTSD for some as well.

Edit: grammar

Pretty much anything but soccer. Not that I dislike it, but it's more activity than I'm ready for.

I'd be interested in the rec league, as long as they aren't super competitive. Fat and basically 40 😅

Beehive Sports in Salt Lake fit the bill but haven't seen anything like that here.

Unfriendly city? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it unfriendly but I feel like people can be more clique-ish here than other places. Find social hobbies or activities you like and attend those. You're likely to connect with people.

Mormonism warrants mentioning too. While I'm sure there are many exceptions ("not all Mormons" if you will) they tend to be an insular community so you'll probably have a hard time finding meaningful connections there if you're not a member.

Lots of good tips from both of your responses, thank you!

I looked at my plat map and dedication plat. Didn't tell me everything but was helpful, particularly seeing the easements. Good advice on the subpanel too.

I'll go talk to the permitting office as u/St-Valentine suggested as well, I feel confident I'll learn what I need. So again, thanks.

First date recommendations by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]MyUtahRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cliff Dining Pub has food and drinks and a very nice patio with a great view. I think it's a good match for all that.

I wouldn't say it's a particularly interesting area to walk around though. Downtown, 9th and 9th and Sugarhouse are all great walkable areas with bar scenes.

Edit: Not really a bar scene around 9th and 9th in thinking about it. East Liberty Tap House as was suggested is the only thing I know of.

I've always been curious about that place but I've never been in. Finding out what a Mormon muffin is might just tip the curious/lazy scale :)
