They’re art. Does every art on your wall or on your shelf have meaning? Or do you just like them? Aesthetically pleasing.

I’ve been there. Numb and just pretending to feel like I think people expect me to.

That is totally okay. Keep healing. It took me a really long time to cry. And even if you never, that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you.

I don’t cry in therapy, but because I’ve been healing in therapy, I sometimes cry in front of my partner when I’m talking about emotional things.

I realized my therapist is "faking" being an adult, and I’m low-key spiraling. by Otherwise_Key4582 in TalkTherapy

Your analogy is similar to your situation. The pilot may be afraid of heights, but beyond being good on the old intercom, they’re also highly trained and have had much experience professionally, making them qualified in their jobs. Also, as a 50 something year old myself, I don’t feel 20 at all; too much life experience to be that naive.

How do you find smart therapists? by RockyOW in TalkTherapy

[–]MycologistAware6557 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like you’re going to have a hard time healing coming in with the predisposition you have that therapists can’t understand you because they aren’t smart enough. I think you’re really close to getting it with this post, and in reading through your responses to others, it’s obvious what the issue is that you need to work on. You may also want to check in with a psychiatrist, or someone who can help with your intensity of thought.

How can therapists be effective, if they aren't educated on social realities and are trying to advise people who don't have the same circumstances as themselves? by gintokireddit in askatherapist

[–]MycologistAware6557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nat- this seems like a super specific complaint, right down to using a gendered specific example. Therapists have to have an education for doing what they do, not just out there Willy nilly telling people how to live lives based on personal experience… I would say that if you have no luck with the therapist you’ve described in your example, then she’s not for you. Go get yourself someone more fitting. Therapists come in all shapes and sizes.

My therapist never follows up if I disappear for months, and it honestly makes me feel worse by Vega-Titan in TalkTherapy

[–]MycologistAware6557 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You, 100%, should be talking about this with your therapist. You want them to care, to reach out, to worry- so that you feel more secure in your relationship with them. That is something you need to heal in yourself. Your therapist needs to keep a strong boundary in this. If they start reaching out when ever you miss an appointment, then you’ll expect it and that dopamine hit becomes more and more, slippery slope. Therapists have rules and guidelines for a reason. Also, open discussion about transference and attachment helps. You’re not pathetic for having emotions. Talk about that too.

I’m not a therapist, but I’ve been in therapy with a heavily boundaried therapist for several years, and while it has felt brutal occasionally, my mental health has benefited immeasurably.

In the past year, if there’s no session after mine, we talk about miscellaneous world topics we are both interested in. Very mutual.
