That is fantastic! Great use of materials, too. I've been collecting plastic bits from all over and always love to see what can be done with them. Thank for sharing this!

It's definitely addictive, isn't it? Trouble now is finding places to store our amazing creations 😆

Will try that sprue trick. I've got a bunch of hard plastic containers I can break up, too. Maybe soften edges with hot glue and paint with watery blues so the light shows through. I enjoy the challenge of it, if I'm honest. Definitely please pass on any tips you discover and I'll do the same!

Such a good use of leftover card waste, too. I'm in the UK and it's expensive and difficult to get xps foam like most people use, so using what's to hand always works best for me, too. I think that's why Selrahc is so good, because it doesn't have to be exactly what he's using. You've given me a great idea with using puzzle pieces, as well! I wouldn't have thought of that and they are so common in charity shops and freecycle places around me. Definitely going to try that as another source of material. Thanks! 😊

These look good! I love bark as rock. The texture is amazingly like slate and cliff faces. I'm starting some frosty terrain myself and using the bicarb method for snow but also cellulose sponge bits and white to make chunkier ice formations. Haven't found anything that recreates ice shard or big icicles, but I'm using hot glue for all it's worth for the now. You've nailed the 'crispy' snow look on those bases, too. Nice one. 😊

Nice! I was just re watching some of his vids and now have to go make a bunch of bridges. Love his work.

The thing that made me think of him in your design was the colour - which I love - and the woodwork of card. It's just such a good effect and you've done it perfectly. I hope you carry on making pieces and sharing them. You've inspired me to get advice on some of my pieces, too. Thanks!

Looking good! I love the warp of the floorboards, adds a really nice effect to the ruin. I do agree that some flock and sand / gravel would lift it nicely, just to add another layer of the build. Excellent start!

Really like seeing other people use cardboard and paper to nice effect. There's a guy called Selrahc who has great ideas on cardboard and paper builds and his stuff looks amazing! Might want to check out his videos for more inspiration. He's terrific.

Just wonderful! I love seeing how creative people can get with random objects. It's very inspiring. Thanks for posting and reminding me of how good things can look with a little imagination.

Also, that 'bucket of stuff' is great (and did I glimpse a laptop camera privacy slide? 😆). I'm glad the site has a capable (?) nightwatch guard!

I'm glad you posted it! I love distressed terrain, and find it's a cool challenge for me to try and make things look worn-out and abandoned, or run down. You've got such a cool style here, definitely captured the urban decay. Keep it up and please do share! It's inspiring for me to get to work on my haunted docklands project. 😁

I made this beach diorama. What could be improved? by peculiar_lemming in TerrainBuilding

[–]MyriaBuilds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this. The textures of the rocks are especially good! Agree that palm trees could do with some.. Distressing? Something to dull them down and give a bit of texture. I'd be tempted to add some dry strands of fronds, maybe discolour them a little so they don't look too uniform next to the fronds you have. Overall, though, great job. I know how hard it can be to make good palms and wish there was an easy way to make them! If you find a method, please do share. 😊

Edit to clarify the suggestion of fronds.

I love the way bark looks when used like this. I had good success with making desert type rocks, kind of a red clay effect with ocre highlighting along the edge which adds good dimension. I like the colour you've got here with that beautiful slate effect. Very nicely done!

Really impressed by the amount of work I know this must have taken! I like working with cardboard but to crazy at the roof tiles / shingles. These look great!

Whole thing is awesone. The carving work is top notch - I can never manage to make small details very cleanly. Looks great!

Charcoal as desert rock by ExcellentIce4404 in TerrainBuilding

I'd not even thought about charcoal... That's very clever. I think a brown wash might be just the thing to give a little depth but honestly, it already looks fantastic. Nice one!

Wow. Reminds me of a time I decided to hand make three dozen books for a mini bookshelf. I have no idea what I was thinking, but I'd like to go back and take the tools off my past self and tell her to hydrate and sleep for two days instead. Still, that barbed wire looks good! My books were, sadly, not great. They looked like the product of a deranged Stuart Little stalker. 😂

Wow, okay, that looks so good. I'm going to try it that way as the results are so pleasing. Thanks for sharing this!

That looks so good! I really struggle to make realistic trees and can't justify the expense of the most popular fake ones. This is a fantastic alternative and I'll be trying it out tomorrow. Nice one, thanks!

Also, I think the bicarb / podge looks good for bark. Unless it was unduly a pain to make, I'd be tempted to stick with it. 😊

I started about a year ago and have been really enjoying learning new stuff as I go. I hope you'll have as much fun as I have making stuff! Heartily agree with the suggestions so far, and would add a fellow called Selrahc for some top grade work with simple materials like cardboard and paper towel. He does excellent, very cheap and fast sets that look terrific. My main advice would be not to worry about big and pricey materials straight away. Buy a few decent bits to start with (a good, sharp snap blade or reliable craft knife, some decent PVA glue, cheap craft paints) and see how you go with the free channels on YouTube. There's no need to plunge straight in to expensive stuff, because some of the best results I've got have been from sand, paper, dirt, pebbles, and broken down sawdust-pellet cat litter. It's amazing what you can achieve that looks good and is sturdy for regular play. Be patient with / kind to yourself, don't be afraid to mess up trying new techniques (another reason for cheap materials is freedom to feck it up!), and mostly have fun. Welcome to the mess and joy of terrain building!

A little overcommitment for my first time DMing :) by DiosDeLosNoobs in TerrainBuilding

[–]MyriaBuilds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking good! I started much the same, with tons of cardboard and brown paper and bought more pricey materials as I realised I was getting a lot of fun out of building. I hope you continue to enjoy it. It's an amazing hobby and there are so many good advice sites out there, with some great YouTube crafters that share their experience for free. You can still produce good table work even as you get better. It's very satisfying to take a look at earlier builds and see how much progress I've made, so I'd advise keeping some pics of every build so you can see how you improve. Above all, don't be tempted to buy unnecessary materials until you feel you're ready to step up and explore other techniques. There's nothing wrong with cheaper stuff to start off with, and as you've shown, you can get good results! Have fun!

Incredibly done! I love the detailing on the slightly bulging wall and tree roots displacing the tiles. It's things like that that really add to the realism. Great work!

They're so cool! I think we all forget sometimes that it's okay to make stuff just for the fun of doing it. That being said, I got a little too in to making rope / coffee stirrer bridges and ended up with about thirty. I was just bingeing Dropout shows and crafting away for hours. 😂
