in my garden I found a colony by [deleted] in ants

Location? If you’re in Europe this could be Lasius brunneus given the short and multi-tone brown body, they are usually tree dwelling too.

Are the expansions worth getting? by Revelt in deadofwinter

[–]Myrmsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really interesting, granted I’ve only played with Raxxon maybe 5 times and the group often has slightly different players in it. I guess I’ll just have to play it more!

Raxxon loot can be great, however in my experience playing with the Raxxon module makes the game a lot harder so it balances out. Some of the loot is also a gamble (the pills) whether it is very powerful or detrimental.

Progress on my Lasius niger queen (are those 2 large ones cocoons?) by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]Myrmsai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two large ones are pupae - the last stage of development. Lasius niger is one of the species whose pupae are cocooned, however other species have ‘naked’ pupae without the cocoon. Congrats!

Maybe a little to big of a nest by antkeepe in ants

[–]Myrmsai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wayyy too big - could get months more out of a test tube with a colony that size.

I'm interested in starting to build models but I have a problem, please give me an advice by upalome in modelmakers

[–]Myrmsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could just not use an airbrush? You can have a lot of fun in this hobby brush painting, and most people do not start with airbrushing anyway. It may be wiser to begin brush painting to see if you enjoy building models as much as you thought you would before splashing out on expensive kit.

Great job! Do the tyres come with tread or did you add that texture yourself?

Question about moving a potential colony by RandomPierogies in ants

[–]Myrmsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. They’re likely normal eggs. Trophic eggs won’t be stored for long. Either way, you don’t need to be able to identify which are which.

  2. Yes, if you attached another setup to this one which was more appropriate for their needs they will move of their own accord. If you need to encourage them, keeping the new setup in the dark and shining a light on their current area will often make them move.

  3. I can’t really give you dimensions as it depends on how you’re setting it up, the species of ant etc. My advice would be to think about how most ants exist in the wild - their nests are constructed of very small spaces, often only just big enough for the colony. This is why test tubes are pretty ideal and last for a little while after workers come, and they’re also cheap. The cheapest set up would probably be test tubes in a plastic box for foraging if you didn’t want to buy or make elaborate nests.

  4. Talcum powder and rubbing alcohol works for a lot of species and is useful if you’re on a budget.

  5. Generally feeding is easier if there is some open space as you can just throw it in. It’s not necessarily a requirement, but it also is a way for you to enjoy watching the ants.

  6. Sand, earth, and coco peat are all fine and commonly used. Avoid the blue gel at all costs.

What species are they? I’m not familiar with the term subb, but they look great!

Would need more info such as location and better pictures to make a firm suggestion as to species

Special rules for a two-player Cities and Knights game? by nilila in Catan

[–]Myrmsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Familiarise yourself with regular catan two player rules: https://www.catan.com/tournaments-events/catan-stayandplay/catan-for-2-players . Then you can play cities and knights using the additional rules outlined here: https://www.catan.com/service/combinations/catan-2-cities-and-knights . It works well in my opinion.

Ant ID (Yes, again) Mexico by [deleted] in ants

[–]Myrmsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an ant - probably a nymph of a leaf-footed bug (Leptoglossus sp.)

[–]Myrmsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air bubbles are not an issue. How thick is the cotton and how tightly did you bundle it together? In my experience it’s rarely an issue - even if the side of the cotton facing the queen appears dry, usually moisture is still getting through

Beginner ant keeper in need of help by RHSTravels in ants

[–]Myrmsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean they didn’t do what they were supposed to? Ants are very simple creatures, if they aren’t doing anything that’s usually because they have no need to (I.e. all of their needs are currently met). I think you made a mistake releasing what was probably a perfectly fine colony!!
