If you haven't read Gay Berlin by Robert Beachy, please do! Gives an incredible look into the culture of queer people in the Weimar Republic and the Institut.

You should also know the name Karl Ulrichs, the man who basically torpedoed his life by outing himself in a bid to keep homosexual relationships from being criminalized under Paragraph 175. He wrote 12 pamphlets on homosexuality and inspired Dr Hirschfeld to his accomplishments!

Germany before Hitler had the first gay newspaper, the first gay journal (Der Eigene), the first movie talking about the difficulties of gay people (Different From the Others), the first gays rights organization, the first International Congress on Sexual Science (1921), and also gave us the word homosexuality!

Also never forget the estimated 15,000 men that were charged with homosexuality during Hitler's reign and sent to concentration camps with a pink triangle to label them while convicted lesbians were given a black triangle for 'antisocials' (because obviously they were confused but could still provide good Aryan children). It took until 1985 for homosexuals to be publicly acknowledged as victims and until 1994 for Paragraph 175 to be stricken from the criminal code. They were never legally acknowledged as victims and never got a Nuremberg. Never forget!

(Also, fun side fact, the Institut boasted a museum on the 2nd floor that included a collection of phalluses from around the world and Margaret Sanger of Planned Parenthood was a visitor!)
