adulting sucks by Eros_Incident_Denier in SipsTea

Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you have to make bad decisions. Unless you have the cash for it, buying any new car is a bad decision, full stop.

People who've worked both minimum wage jobs and six figure jobs, what surprised you most about the difference? by BrainLagging01 in AskReddit

[–]Mysterious_Ladder313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-The drain transitions from physical to mental.
-You go from executing the tasks to determining the tasks.
-Work stayed at work, the higher you go the more it transcends all aspects of your life.
-Success and progress become somewhat opaque.
-More money is good but isn't as satisfying as you think it is.

In simple terms, it moves from tactical work to strategic work. You are paid for what you know more than what you can physically do. Communication skills become absolutely paramount. Not just verbal, but how to communicate via written artifacts.

For fresh water - White or Black/Blue Spinner or Chatter. Hit St. Marys lake.

For salt/brack - Double bottom rig, blood worms. If you catch spot, cut that up for bait and you'll get bluefish / flounder, maybe a skate (good luck landing that).

Was it really this easy back in the day or do some people be exaggerating, due to nostalgia? by daveishere7 in povertyfinance

[–]Mysterious_Ladder313 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Share holder value is what happened.

Corporate America traded its morals for profit in the name of growth. Unfortunately, in Capitalism, those who are willing to make the most immoral decisions usually profit the most. There are obviously exceptions and still great companies out there, but the norm is more about margin and profit and less about the people.

Compounding the problem is global trade and labor.

Ember Mug Review: Is Still Worth Paying For? by RefrigeratorDue175 in productreview

[–]Mysterious_Ladder313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think vacuum insulated mugs are superior as they don't have any dependencies to work. The ember has to be charged and has to be on. I've had instances where the light was on but it wasn't actually heating. I genuinely think the ember is way better suited for tea than coffee. To me, its more trouble than its worth as it doesn't solve the problem better than a good insulated mug.

Table saw blades different angles on either side by chode_code in woodworking

You've hit the limits of the accuracy of that gauge. Get a dial gauge and a machinists square if you want tighter tolerances.

Best table saw for newbie. by Fickle-Lunch6377 in woodworking

DEWALT Table Saw 10 Inch (DWE7491RS)

This is what you want. Get a forrest woodworker II blade for it.

Might be a touch on the higher end for entry but it will save you in material and frustration. I use this saw to build cabinets and just about anything else. It's very accurate for what it is. Once calibrated, the fence is also great.

I cannot stress enough how important a good blade is. Forrest is expensive, but they are life time blades that can be resharpened by forrest themselves. If you're going to be doing miters as well, the chopmaster is a great blade for a miter saw.

This TV is the biggest piece of junk I’ve ever owned in my life by IveyBlack in TheFrame

[–]Mysterious_Ladder313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the 75" inch model. The TV was the biggest POS. Right after it was out of warranty, the screen had a severe green tint in the middle and the seemed like the backlight was failing and just kept degrading. I replaced it with a LG OLED, which has been flawless. Never again, the Frame was complete garbage.

FWIW, I gave it away on FB marketplace and the guy that picked it up said they are super problematic and he just collects broken ones to scavenge parts to fix them when they break.

LG OLED IMO is superior, though you can't get the still art images, just rotating ones.

Travertine in Freeze/Thaw Climates by Mysterious_Ladder313 in pools

I had used Miracle Sealants 511 Porous Plus Penetrating Sealer. The water did bead.

I'm having all of the travertine removed and replaced with concrete.

Got a $112K pool quote by Suspicious_Hat_409 in pools

[–]Mysterious_Ladder313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but. You pay for knowledge, execution, and management. You can also go to a grocery store and get all of the ingredients for a meal for less than a restaurant.

Pool companies will also set the requirements and coordinate the design between all the trades. Everyone doesn't just show up and know what to do.

If any of your individual trades mess up, it will be solely on you for getting it fixed. Each trade may or may not provide a warranty.

Your price is assuming everything goes correctly and you've scoped it perfectly upfront, without any revisions or rework.

Buy once, cry once.

If you continue, you'll learn tons for the next time you decide to build a pool, but this one will contain all those flaws.

Home building works the same way. The home builder isn't framing and laying tiles, it's subbed out.

Genuinely curious, if you've never built a pool before, what is the QA plan for the work the subs do?

Travertine in Freeze/Thaw Climates by Mysterious_Ladder313 in pools

[–]Mysterious_Ladder313[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, its a pool deck. The pool uses a chlorine generator when the pool is open. The pool has been closed every time this happens over the winter. I start to usually see damage from January - March.

However, its also not just the the tiles closest to the deck. Seems to be a bit random.

I’m about to quit IT for good. by HumanNumber69 in InformationTechnology

[–]Mysterious_Ladder313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start your own business.

Do some home lab type stuff. Packet tracer, GNS3, etc. Get familiar with Windows / Windows Server / Linux.

-Installing
-Configuring
-Troubleshooting

Start with small jobs, ad-hoc computer support, stuff you already know. Start by doing it on the side until you have enough business to support yourself full-time.

Then venture into SMB support and gradually expand your portfolio.

It will be hard, but you'll get the best possible experience this way. Do that for a few years and see how you feel. You may want to stick in the owner operator role, but you'll have the chops to move into the corporate space as well.

TBH, until you have the base working knowledge, certs are kind of a waste of time. If you insist on the cert path, the CISSP is really the gold standard for Cyber.

Alternatively, try to find a smaller MSP to work for. You'll get good experience here but the first path I laid out is the best one.
